In a performance that made her a household name, k.d. lang performs a beautiful version of "Crying" and "A Tribute To Roy Orbison" that was held at the Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles California on February 24th, 1990. This upload comes directly from a Video8 (8mm) tape recording of the broadcast and features the FM simulcast audio. #kdlang #royorbison

I was the Production Manager at Universal Amphitheatre for this show. I was at FOH with the audio engineer, Jeff Cox. We looked at each other in disbelief as she sang this song. I thought she was going to blow the doors off the Amphitheatre! This is probably the most amazing vocal performance I’ve ever seen in my 30 years of working shows. Still gives me chills! Thanks for posting it!

Roy Orbison chose KD Land to do a duet of this song with him because he knew that she had the voice to blend with him and further that she understood the "story" ...the emotion of the song ,when to be subtle and when to let it all out which she did with a wonderful result. The response of the audience showed that they knew it was a special moment. Thanks for posting.

It's been 2 yrs shy of 40 when my husband left me for another woman. The first few years was unbearable, crying became a pastime until the passage of time started to heal the wound and like this song, I was alright and started smiling until I watched this very tender performance of Crying by Ms Lang. Her rendition of the song opened up a wound that I thought has long time healed and I started to cry again.

We are not so different … I left my husband 1 year shy of my 40th birthday. Despite my leaving him, the grief was unbelievable (I found out after I left that he had been cheating on me). The first year as a single parent of 3 young kids I struggled to put food on the table. I only cried in the bathtub where my kids wouldn’t hear me. Grief is universal and no amount of time can take away the pain … but, I will say that leaving my husband was the best decision I could have ever made. I stood on my own 2 feet, raised my 3 kids and held my head up throughout all the pain, poverty and heartbreak! Life has a way of giving us respite when we need it and showing us that oh so needed “light at the end of the tunnel” when we need it most! Take care … love from someone in Canada

If there is ever any doubt that there is discrimination against the LGBTQ community, just think about this woman. K.D. Lang has an amazing voice and should have been a big as Adele, Streisand, Dionne, Houston and other super talented female vocal artists, but she wouldn't dress like a girl, wear make up or wear her hair in a feminine style. No musicals. No long-term shows in Las Vegas. No movies. She got the career scraps. Count yourself lucky it you have seen her perform. Monster talent.

Someone please invent a Time Machine and teleport me back to this concert. I don't care if I come back to the present. I want to sit there and listen to one of the best and most amazing vocal performances I have ever heard in my 70 years of living. I want to cry. This has to be the best tribute to the great Mr. Roy Orbison that there ever could be bar none. If you see their duet together kd respectfully stands behind Roy and doesn't let her voice over power his but here she can let loose with everything she has and she does in Spades. How lucky was this audience to be there and remember an angel singing.

I remember seeing this over 30 years ago and thinking it was among the two or three greatest live vocal performances I’d ever seen. The intervening years have not diminished my opinion of it. I had the opportunity to see k.d. lang at my local high school auditorium in southern New Jersey in early 2000. She is, without question, the best live vocalist I’ve ever had the privilege to see in nearly 50 years of live performances. No fireworks, no histrionics, no near-nudity, seductive dances or lip-syncing.... just a voice, a band, a couple of backup singers and the song. And it was GLORIOUS. Between “Cryin’”, “Hallelujah” and “Pulling Back the Reins”, I was certain I’d never heard a better singer. She is utterly astounding.

K.D. Lang is a generational singer, anyone fortunate enough to have heard her will never forget that voice. Her voice is clear, expressive and so much better than even those singers that are thought to be great singers of the day. I was fortunate to hear her, in the beginning, at the Edmonton Folk Festival as she came from close to my home in Alberta. Even then she was just a knockout singer. She has not been given the accolades that she deserves. She is in a class by herself.

An unbelievably beautiful song, an unbelievably beautiful voice…but most of all an amazingly beautiful heavenward gracious gesture from k.d. Lang for Roy Orbison who left us so soon. This performance was before my birth, meaning I was born several years after Roy died, but even so when she sings at 03:48 “now you’re gone, and from this moment on, I’ll be crying” is just gut-wrenching. The man helped launch her career and a year after gifting her the opportunity, he dies and here she sings it in memorial to him. I would be beyond devastated. Thank you k.d. Lang for this performance. I’m sure Roy thanks you, too.
