The Kedarnath Temple (Sanskrit: केदारनाथ मंदिर, IAST: Kēdāranātha Mandira) is a Hindu temple and one of the twelve jyotirlinga of Shiva. The temple is located in the Garhwal Himalayan range[1] near the Mandakini river, Uttarakhand state, India. The temple remains closed to general public due to severe weather conditions except from April (Akshaya Tritiya) to November (Kartik Purnima or autumn full moon).
The nearest road head is 22 km away at Gaurikund.
It was initially established by Pandavas as per Hindu legends and is counted amongst the Jyotirlingas which are considered to be the most sacred abodes of Lord Shiva.[1] It is said that Pandavas approached the lord while they were on their pilgrimage to Kedarnath.
Kedarnath was devastated during the flash floods in North India in 2013. Though there was extensive damage to the Kedarnath town, surrounding areas and temple complex, but there has not been significant harm done to temple structure itself apart from four walls that have minor cracks on one side because flowing rubble came down from upper slopes of mountains. This debris contained a huge rock that acted as a wall against this flood. The market premises around it were highly destroyed together with other buildings.
