These doctors are the courageous few who are holding the line. It made me see that they could go anywhere for acknowledgement, or prestige, but they are choosing something which is more rewarding and is also making a difference. They should know that this documentary shows them for the heroes that they are.

I admire the Drs who stay to serve the underprivileged people of those province's. They truly choose to serve humanity over high profile positions at larger hospitals in bigger cities. They are the real heroes. Sadly the decline in Health Systems is happening worldwide. So many smaller hospitals in my area of the US have closed, and the only remaining one is overcrowded, overburdened, and understaffed with a huge elderly population in our rural areas that seems to be very neglected and underserved. Great job with the documentary - I hope it inspires new Doctors graduating medical school in South Korea to choose to be on the front lines to serve their local communities. This hospital offers a wealth of hands on experience for any intern, especially those who like a fast paced environment.

Hate to say it, but the reality theres like maybe 1 in 10 million medical doctors who do that, mostly are just have no choice and as you can see most of doctors seen here are young meaning theyre just there for experience and likely rejected at other hospital and once they have enough experience they very much look for another hospital who pays better. trust me people sure like helping people to save life , but most if us prefer it it it pays well too.

I didn‘t see the whole documentary yet and am not in Korea. Still, i wonder why do you think that in local hospitals you will get more experience and expertise? In bigger hospitals i think you may not be allowed to practice as much actively, but you have a chance to get more input from others and not do the mistakes yourself? Am I wrong here? I mean if you have a larger pool of more experienced doctors present in a larger hospital you obviously also have more experienced people there

I am a nurse for over 30 years working in California USA. I have met so many dedicated hard work young men and women studying extremely hard and becoming doctors, nurses and other ancillary health professionals. The hospital managers and CEOs do not care about the patients or their staffs. Many are so overworked and overwhelmed with heavy workload and especially during the COVID pandemic. How do these people the hospitals management and CEOs repay us with pay cut and take away. Blaming us for hospitals error due mostly to system errors. The hospitals management know that it’s cheaper to blame the doctors or nurses than to fix the on going system errors. Hope these managers and CEOs reap their vile karmas one day. I am getting out and don’t advise the young to go into it either.

Sadly a lot more doctors and nurses are still pushing to go to the US, despite knowiing these problems. Their only reason is that salaries are much higher.

i am a student nurse as of the moment and this video makes me want to even study harder to help save lives esp in rural areas. i am from the ph and ph nurses has been known as one of the exporters of nurses worldwide. i was once asked by a clinical instructor during college admission interview whether i will also want to go abroad to earn more money since nurse's salary here is ph is so smaall and i said no i wanted to work at a local provincial hospital. they all laughed because they said students nowadays only want to study nursing bc of money. well not for me. this vid made me even want to work at a local or provincial hospital to help the locals who are in need. if i will be given an opportunity to study medicine, i will think twice to continue learning. i really hope people who wanted to become a healthcare professional are dedicated to their jobs as well to the health of their countrymen.

I'm an Emergency doctor who has worked 10 year in emergency department in Malaysia and it's basically war on daily basis here. We struggle to keep the patient alive in the district hospital before transferrng them to bigger hospital for definitive treatment like surgery. It's basically the same all over the world

Hi. I'm a nurse, i'm 22 years old, i'm from Mexico and i don't have job. I'm Reading the comments. And this situation is not only in Korea, it is all over the world. The health system was already deficient but after the pandemic this increased. All staff do their best to care for patients. There is not enough staff and supplies as well as medicines and despite all this; we always give 100% of ourselves for our patients recover and return home.

I have worked for 5 years of my residency in an understaffed field in my country as not many choose Oncology as they find treating cancer patients despressing, so we always had 3-4 residents at a time and during my final year of residency we were only two residenrs at my universitys hospital which happens to be ASIAs one of the largest hospital by no of beds. So it felt like 5 years of my residency were running in front of my eyes in form of this documentary! These doctors must be really overworked and are the precious and courageous ones! I used to hear and still hear by other specialty doctors that i have really strong nerves to choose a specialty where not many have courage to train! I completely understand and salute these doctors they are heros!

Those young doctors are so committed to their vocation their only thought is for their patients. It so sad that many elderly patients live far from their children and nearest relatives, and what so often is the case hesitate to call them. This is something we very rarely see the struggles and aspirations of these young aspiring doctors committed to their patients and saving lives. God bless these wonderful men and women. From my perspective as a British guy living in Anyang, South Korea the part about the decline in the number of new pediatricians hit home- I sometimes wait for several hours at our local clinic just for the kids to be seen for something minor and the waits are getting longer. On another note, many of my students (I'm an English teacher) are nurses studying for the IELTS test so that they can eventually emigrate to America where the salaries for healthcare workers are much higher.

Being a German Doctor I would move to such an area in Korea in a heartbeat after gaining sufficient proficiency in the language... Unfortunately our degrees are not recognized in Korea so we'd have to take very extensive examinations again to be licensed to work as a doctor there.

There was a bud in my unit who achieved doctor's license in china which is not lecognized in south korea. That was why he joined the korean military police as a private instead of being an medical officer. I wonder how is he doing in these days.

@@thanushathavaratnam6834 Sure, I hope this can be somewhat of a help in my country, in order to be a GP we have to go through 3.5-4 years of preclinical phase in uni (getting a degree / bachelor of medicine) + 2 years of clinical rotations in an educational hospital. My uni happened to collaborate with one of the largest referrals in the country, so the cases were very complex, unlike the typical things we studied during our bachelor years, focusing on one disease each. I came to realize that a complex case for us to learn is also a worse prognosis / outcome for the patient, so more proportion of patients are in worse condition that in those of a primary care setting. There are some moments I cannot forget during my currently 1 year of clinical rotation, and it is indeed disheartening to see that these people are in this condition. I don’t really watch kdrama abt medical stuffs so I can’t really compare, but it is indeed an experience. It might be different from other major, as you are facing real problems in an actual human body, families facing the reality of truth, and the list goes on. As someone who did not want to go to medical school, nevertheless, medicine is a worth-it major as it is a profession that people will always need, and being able to help not only patients but also my family felt very satisfying. It is also very multidisciplinary (and useful in real life), so even though you are not very passionate about one thing, I believe you will eventually find something you like in medicine. It’s not just about curing, but there’s also preventive, forensic medicine, to research. “You can be whatever you want?” I guess. I wish for you to decide what’s the best for yourself! If you want to get medicine, despite the hectic clinical & residency life (yes), I think it is still worth to experience.

OMG GOD BLESS these Doctors, nurses, hospital workers! Who'd want to work at an understaffed hospital like this? I feel so bad for them but then who would help the people in the country? So sad all the patients having to travel so far just to get treatment. Also the poor grandpa who has NO ONE to watch over him, comfort him. I hope there are social workers/volunteers in Korea to visit the sick who have no one.

That scene at 7:33 is exactly the same as my fathers 2 months ago. My sister called that my father is getting revive few hours after his surgical operation. I rushed to hospital and see the exact same thing, that tube with air that they are pumping in his lungs surrounded by doctors and nurses and younger medical staff as they take turns doing CPR. Before you knew it, tears were falling from your eyes and all you can do is watch from the door. Then they proceed in declaring time of death and covered him with a white cloth. You could just feel the pain of the 3 sons at 17:16 as they sat together and wait the inevitable. Hats off to all doctors and nurses who are doing their best to save our love ones.

I am working in the lab for a hospital. To be honest most professions in medical and clinical line are declining. I am working in the lab plus blood bank and we are dealing with a lot of samples; routinely and urgently. It just draining mentally and physically especially when there’s a lot to do but so little time given. Plus, we need to give out results accurately and quickly as the doctors’ judgements will depend on us. Adding also is at least the doctors and nurses’ struggles are known and people sympathise with them. They also will get a pay raise significantly after an amount of time. In my field, unless you move into managerial or executive position, you may have a raise around $100 plus minus yearly.

this is similar to the public health care situation in the Philippines except we don't have the necessary equipment. intubate a patient but no mechanical ventilator. No anti-seizure medications at the emergency room. And only 1 nurse assigned to an entire ward. 😞

I agree. This is common in rural areas. In Manila, there are a lot of well-equipped hospitals, but still, understaffing is common probably due to the low salary wage.

same here too, in the er i work the suction machine doesnt work, so its a gamble with every intubation and we also dont have a ventilator so we just continue to use the ambu till the patient reaches another center

These doctors' actions are incredibly noble and these are the kinds of people who I have true respect for. Despite the fact they have better options they instead choose to go somewhere far less desirable because they truly care and want to make a difference. They are so selfless as they do not think about themselves and instead think about and prioritize other people and their well-being above themselves and their own well-being, respectively. I sincerely hope that they know they are being very noble and charitable in their actions that they will find solace and comfort despite everything they are going through by choosing to work in far less desirable places in the fact that their actions are so noble and that they are the kinds of people who other people have genuine respect for.

Korea's dependency on Seoul and concentration on Seoul are shocking. Why can't they spread development more evenly throughout the country instead of focusing everything around Seoul? Their over-reliancene on Seoul started to show; less job opportunities at rural areas, less facilities for rural folks, even less medical healthcare for them. Shocking.

They seem to have adopted a lot of things from the French. Semi-presidential system, hypercentralization, too much money and resources centered on the capital, gradual extinction of local dialects and languages.

As a cardiovascular surgery resident myself I agree that it might be chaotic sometimes, but the satisfaction that comes after participating in a heart transplant and seeing the new, once stoped heart, start to beat again is unmatched! I couldn't do anything else.

Currently an intern doctor in a big city. Sometimes I’d go whole day of not being able to eat or pee. Sometimes I find myself coming home with just blank stares. I lost my personality out of so much exhaustion. And we’re not even paid to do this. Just part of the training. I want to give up everyday.

I think this decrease number of doctor are happening all over the world, after covid hit hard, lots of doctors and nurses were died in the field and how hard the jobdesk in the medical field makes people, especially younger generation think twice to work as a doctor or a nurse to continue maintain health care system. I’m afraid there would be a day when there’s no doctor or nurse around to help the patient

I feel like watching Hospital playlist and Doctor romantic or first responder series. We see doctors are earning lots of money but we can't imagine the pain , struggle they went through while performing there duties or even while studying. It's not easy job. Some of my friends are doctor. We rarely meets because of there schedule or even if we meet they have to be alert for any emergency. They can't date or even if they do because of there tight schedule they can't give that much time to relationship and eventually break up happens . Sometimes we easily say doctor didn't do there best when we loose someone but we don't see there struggle and pain whole declaring that patient dead. Doctors are also humans so obviously they feel pain. Doctors job is very critical as its related to patients health. So one mistake and it ends . 27:35 love the bonding between senior doctor and junior ( sunbae and hoobae) ❤. Doctors perform surgeries for 15, 20 hrs they get exhausted, depressed, they are fighting inside also with themselves.

Feel so bad to see the situation of these elderly people most of them living alone with out the presence of their families which a normal situation there in South korea most of their kids once they get married they will move living in the City leaving their parents behind.Salute to these bunch of Young korean doctors working 24 hrs.saving the life of those elderly❤❤❤

Now the trainee doctors are striking. The root cause is more pay since they are already overworked previously and now afraid to see their income also dropping. However the citizens are unable to cough up the money. So the root cause is actually the highly flawed US monetary trading system. Perhaps East Asia should have their own single currency to prevent becoming slave to the "democracy" system.

Staffing shortages within healthcare seems to be a global issue. Where I’m from, millions of people don’t have access to a family doctor. Emergency Room wait times are at an all time high. In certain regions, patients wait an average of 20 hours to be admitted. This is due to the hospitals being understaffed and not having enough bedside nurses.

What shocked me is south korea relatively a small country by area. How come a rich small country can have this problem. Big country like usa with many rural area in the middle i can understand. Developing countries, it is everyday story. But rich country with korea area size?

I'll be honest… I realized something is completely wrong with me the moment I realize I can tell that lady his father had died and I put on some words and a fake smile that I learn how to do when I was tired and started to doing it more and more often… lately that's all I can remember how to do. But it practically remove any emotional issue I would otherwise face if I care about each and every single one like a normal person would. You still have to clock in the next day, and regardless if it's holiday you will see a patient being wheeled in sometimes with their love ones full of worry by their side... It would be hell if you still have the time to care about how these things. If you're there distracted thinking about this stuff… will the patient do your job to save themselves? Thanks to this I don't need to take sleeping pills to sleep at night, and still able to have a good night sleep even if I just lost a patient earlier in the day. Not that I don't feel bad, it's just that no one wants a sleep-deprived doctor to be the one responsible their love ones now wouldn't they?

My eyes started to get watery when that grampa was by himself having to deal with surgery 🥺🥺 They are doing a fantastic job and I hope they know that. Being in a setting like that has got to be so intimidating and scary…I really hope they are able to recruit more doctors so people don’t have to travel so far to seek help…

This is not a weird thing in South Korea. Because most well-equipped hospitals and related professional medical workers have activated their services in Seoul. The reason is very simple. Most medical doctors in South Korea wanted to get their jobs in Metropolitan Seoul. Seoul's working conditions are much better than in local cities, to be honest. If the central government of South Korea had planned a plausible alternative to solve this serious thing, many urgent patients could've seen doctors' faces in their hometowns.

@@tiredofeverything1 South Korea is know for its blatant racisim and xenophobia. Plenty documentaries show how they treat people who are a different skin colour to them. I still cant fathom why foreighers blindly follow stupid KPop especially countries like India when they ban Indians & Blacks from eating in resturants and bars. There several places in India with SK resturants that have banned Indians from patronising them.

Its always difficult for doctors to inform the family member that their Love one is gone. It hurts every time. But when the time comes that it doesn't hurt anymore, I think its time to get out or rest from work.

Don't know why people are complaining. Most people needs to go in massive debt to even becomes a doctor. Healthcare and hospital is underfund. I say countries reap what the sow.

Since the pandemic nothing is the same. We never had trouble finding doctors. Now everyone seems to be short staffed. Appointments are not right away but months later. Never in my life have I experienced what is taking place.

As a orthopedic surgion currently residing in local medical center, I think a major problem is not the numbers of doctors in Seoul and easy acessibility to patients seeking treatments. I think almost all patients living at contrysides prefer a treatment at few major hospitals in Seoul even in cases of requiring simple sugical procedures. The minds of people that I can understand, but there are many doctors who are equipped with many credentials and expiences even outside of Seoul. This wrong projection ( which major hospital such as Samsung medical center and other must be better) causes overcrowding of patient at Seoul and less in countrysides. In Korea, comparing to other country like Unites states ( which I have lived ) and England and Japan, accessibility and cost of visiting and receving medical treaments are much easier and cheeper in factuality. Healthbreak- down? in rural areas? I do not tend to aggree.

The underlying message this clip conveys is economic disparity between bigger cities and smaller towns. This should be solved at the Blue House level.
