I'm sorry your best friend's family had to experience that, but I am relieved their son is okay. But it is important to note that he did not commit suicide, rather he attempted it. Also, using the phrase "committed suicide" is not in good taste as it was made and used during a time where suicide was seen as a crime or sin. A more appropriate and neutral phrase would be "died of suicide" or "death by suicide." And yes, how we phrase things in the psychological field is very important as outdated, harmful words such as "committed" only add on to the stigma behind mental health and further alienate people suffering from mental health issues.

The other excuse is "It's Just Kids Joking around." There was this show, I forgot the title, that invited a mixed race guy where they talked about his experience growing up in Korea. Of course he brought up the fact that he was bullied for his skin color(he was brown) and the hosts inserted jokes while he was telling his story then, towards the end they told him not to take those incidents seriously, cuz it's "Just Kids Joking around." The thing about this bullying issue is that media and koreans are more sympathetic to bullying issues when it concerns Koreans more than they would mixed race children or immigrant children. The adults make excuses for the behavior of the children so that they can ignore the fact that they have a prevalent racism, xenophobic, and bullying problems. And of course, there's the Homophobia and Sexism.

I was a high school English teacher in Korea for a few years. During my first year of teaching, a female student in my class was bullied badly to the point where there were bruises on her body. She was a smart student, very quiet, and her family was struggling financially. I heard the other students making fun of her for being poor. I informed the head director of the school a few times about the bullying that was happening, and he told me not to get involved because it's nothing serious and "kids will be kids." After asking around since I couldn’t find a support system (I mean, I was just a foreigner in my first year of teaching and I didn't know much Korean), I soon found out that this was common in Korea. One day, the bully was hitting the victim on the head a few times so I grabbed the bully's hand and told her to stop it. The bully and her parents reported me to the director. The director was shouting at me and called me stupid many times, and kept apologizing to the bully and her parents. Out of the 3 adults (excluding myself) in that room, no one believed that there was any bullying going on. A few weeks later, I found out that the victim was bullied outside of school so badly to the point where she attempted suicide and then she left the city to live with her grandmother in the countryside. I sometimes wonder how she is and what she is doing now. She should be around 23 or 24 years old now.

If they did it in middle school or high school, their actions will follow them until workplace (unless their parents are rich people). Its has been even more the case in the recent years, when every students of a famous idol school (Seoul School of Performing Arts) decided to show everyone what was going on their school (the teacher using the students to do seks related to stuff, punishing them for no reasons or very harshly and many more). There was talk of employee and families being threatened in terms of work and education opportunities. There is adult bullying there is kid bullying. What makes such little sense is Korea for decades have sent people abroad for work and study and suffered discrimination for being foreign or biracial for those who marry outside Korea and have kids. The news is full of accounts of how horribly Korean have been treated abroad for not being American, German, etc… Yet in Korea foreigners and multicultural children are not treated well. It’s why a lot of soldier’s kids ended up adopted outside of Korea from the 50’s onward. Physical danger to multicultural kids. Look what the USA is like now, full of "wokeness", blaming men, anti-police, blaming other people's skin color for their problems and so much more. Better leave other cultures alone, we have no right to dictate how they run their countries. I am sure you don't want South Koreans telling your country what to do in yours. All this social-justice and virtue signaling are just used by politicians to hold power and get people to elect them to office. When they are in positions of power, they don't hold to their promises and things actually are made worse for their quest for more power because they oppress the very same people who put them there. To those that are brushing this off by saying "bullying happens in every country", while that may be true, bullying is VERY prominent in korea whether you like it or not. It's so normalized that it happens not only within schools but within workplaces, and is so often excused by their superiority system. Please read and watch stories from ex hagwon teachers in korea. There's a reason why the term 'Hagwon horror' is a thing(not all hagwons and public schools, but its common). You would rarely hear that many bullying and suicidal incidents(from kids and teens) like you would here in the U.S. It's sad.
@88ひびき2 жыл бұрын
exactly. the people that go "oh, bullying happens in every country!" are part of the problem. some east asian countries have a big culture with bullying and unfortunately linked suicide rates. there's a reason why a chinese movie about bullying a few years ago became very popular, because it did not sugarcoat this huge issue. even social services and support is lacking, not to forget that your superiors may condone or overlook it. progress in solving this is hard because it is so case by case and area by area.

I was one of the few Asian students in a predominantly white school, in Australia. While there were occasional racism and insensitivity, nothing came close to the physical violence and torture in this video. Also my teachers took bullying reports very seriously and wouldn't brush them off as "just kids being kids". Human beings can tame wild animals like tigers and lions, but teachers and parents can't tame some rude kids? I call that BS! This level of bullying in Korea is shockingly brutal and criminal. I don't care if it's a part of the "culture" or not. It's wrong and it's traumatising children for the rest of their lives.

I maybe patriotic but I will not defend my country on dark stuff like this. Idc if you’re a Korean who hasn’t experienced this stuff, it happens. Just like in every country. The korean society has so much to be proud of, and yet so much more to improve. Like the bullying, I myself am mixed race, and when my classmates found out about it, bullied me physically and verbally. I would come home with burns, cuts and bruises on my body from where they found it disgusting I am mixed race. I was also told “this is how it works in Korea” despite being born and raised here. Similarly foreigners who come to live in Korea, or even just for a holiday, 8/10 experience racism or Xenophobia. And it doesn’t matter how many times you say “if you don’t like it go back to your country”, it proves you’re apart of the problem, and that the problem exists. It was even worse for one of my siblings who is autistic and trans, she experienced enough prejudice that I had to stop her from killing herself more than enough times. I saw her smile, like so many others, disappear. My country is awesome, has such rich history, such good food, and is a good country, but the fact so many cannot see, are unwilling to admit or even own up to its faults, proves we have so much more to improve on. I hope this boy is doing okay, I also hope that so many people experience the can feel okay in their own time.

Another issue is that some or most Koreans are so prideful, and most of them honored their narcissistic attitudes, which can exacerbate societal problems. It’s the worst experience when bullying is being prop up by the person who’s supposed to help you and correct the perpetrators. Especially when it happened inside the classroom, all students would think that bullying is right as the person in authority is also taking part of the action instead of educating them. I almost committed suicide but I single person who’d always tapped my back and smile after school made me realized that not everyone is evil. I can’t believe bullying like this actually exists in some places. I always thought it was exaggerated on tv but it’s clearly not. When I saw people do that stuff on tv I thought “that can’t be real, no one would get away with something like that” but I was wrong. Literally stealing from people and beating them up, I can’t believe people get away with that. I would go straight to the police if I saw that. My dad always taught me as a kid that if I ever got bullied I should punch them in the face, I think lots of other kids got taught similar things. I can’t believe people would let bullying like that happen anywhere, that is a failure by all parties. I'm in the US, but my kid was bullied so bad in middle school last year. The principal took it easy on the bullies so it went on all year until my kid became depressed and kept begging to stay home. And this was a Catholic school. So this fall we're homeschooling for the first time and my son is thrilled to stay home. He's happy now and has no school related stress. I've heard from several friends with kids still at the school that the bullies haven't changed at all so I know we made the right decision.

I’m happy to hear that but from a European perspective I don’t think homeschooling could be a long-term solution, considering children do also need to learn to socialize, hopefully just in a better environment to find great friends! Though I’m of course not in your situation so I hope you are all doing well, and hopefully your beautiful child can go back to (another) school one day!

Sad how even the MC brushed the bullying part off like it's nothing - "good thing you got into sport" not, "holy shit these bullying needs to stop". Primary school and highschool made up probably half of his life (at the moment he's probs under 30?) and probably scarred him for life. Brushing it off like it was only a 5min of discomfort is so shallow and clearly shows they didn't really care and probs, agreed with the bullying to some extent.

They only recently stopped letting teachers beat kids, 2011. They just outlawed parents from doing so in the last year or two. If you watch Korean dramas more realistically read English language Korean news you will know employers beat and threaten their underlings. Insist them drink themselves into a state. It is not a work friendly place at all. There was something in the news about the 10 year old granddaughter of a newspaper family conglomerate caught on audio threatening the driver to have him fired for asking her to sit down in the car with a seatbelt on. Oddly enough you will also see character’s rush to the first aid kit or pharmacy for a skinned knee or paper cut and a rush to hospital at the first sign of fever for a shot. But people will hide cancer treatment and down pills secretly. Quirky place. Beat kids with a stick is okay a skinned knee needs ointment and a bandage immediately or will scar and alter life forever. Teachers are rightly afraid of the parents of some students. Their brother may lose their job or their father. There are limited private school options unless the student was abroad a long time or has a foreign parent they can got to international schools for big bucks. They reason the kids don’t have the language and either had that curriculum or similar or will finish with that curriculum or similar so they are allowed the 20K plus tuition. Ironic isn’t it. Korean parents didn’t want the afghan refugee children to attend regular school. They started late in the year and are ‘segregated’ getting culture classes. I sure hope they read up on US and Canadian culture experiments of Indigenous kids so they don’t repeat. The parents worked for Korean companies in Afghanistan. They know something already.. They can hire a translator, perhaps some of these parents were the translators there? It is xenophobic. Just confused cause no white people involved. It will take 20-30 years to sort out. A bully will invent another reason. All reasons for bullying are invented anyway.

I just finished watching "The King of Pigs" and am so sad to hear bullying is still such a big problem. Still, I admire South Korea for talking openly about problems in society and not hiding it away in order to "save face" as in some other countries (which really makes them lose face instead). And wow some great masterpiece movies and TV series they have made out of it. D.P., The King of Pigs, Extracurricular, Shark: The Beginning, Itaewon Class, Squid Game, Parasite, Law School.... Wow what an era for Korean development! Respect for that

Nah, as someone in Korea, they still try to hide it all under the rug and act like it's not a problem. Just like that teacher, "that's just the way it is". These TV shows and movies are people who are sick of it. Korea has deep issues just like any country, they're not doing any better or worse I'd say. Racism, misogyny, Xenophobia, bullying, still very prevalent. It's just getting harder for them to keep making excuses because they've become popular and are thrown very prominently on the global stage. Korea likes to say it's very "Globally minded" but then turns around makes excuses for blatantly racist/Xenophobic things that make the news. "Please understand our unique situation" "we're still learning". ...how many times do you have to be told racism is wrong? Xenophobia is not okay? Xenophobia towards children is not okay? Covid has very much made many of these problems worse.

If the teacher and the school administrators are very serious about implementing such an Anti-bullying act or policy on the campus, this scenario will never gonna happen. There must be an orientation, for both parents and learners, prior to the formal class beginning about this act.

Bullying seems to be a huge problem in East Asia, particularly, China, Korea and Japan. And I believe it's due to the type of social norms,and their society, that is to blame, not their ethnicity. As most indigenous culture worldwide, it's a community based culture, and society, so group mentality is hug. ANd the well being of the groups triumphs that of the individual person. This can be very damaging and toxic, especially in regards to having to fit in, not dare to be themselves, and of course anything that shows you're different, it means you're going to be bullied, unless you do your bst to conform to peer pressure. S.Korea in general has a lot of social issues, like suicide due to bullying, as well as domestic violence, and hate crimes towards people that doesn't fit the generic conservative Korean norm. Plastic surgery especially! Looks, status, and money before anything. Mental health, equality and human rights isn't exactly celebrated.

For your lack of information: -Mainland China is not as homogeneous as Korea or Japan. -For a population of 1.45 Billion to even function at all, the welfare of the community SHOULD supercede that of the individual. -Even if you have been to China + "witnessed bullying", you should not generalize your isolated experience, to the whole country. When you read and hear SO MANY stories of the tolerated bullying towards persons who don’t fit the homogeneous bubble of South Korea it’s hard not to feel critical of their values…I don’t see it as racist and don’t think it is a stupid blanket statement. For so many stories about bullying it says that there is a system that tolerates humans hurting humans and other than lip service, it’s not getting fixed
@inthehours2 жыл бұрын
@@siouxsan5705 It is fair to say there are discrimination issues in Korea. As I said, I’m mixed Korean and have a lot of personal experience with it. I also get really frustrated. But I’ve also lived in many different countries, including Canada, France, Sweden and Japan which don’t get as much stereotyping for racism or bullying. So I’m also aware of very deep racism and bullying being issues everywhere. Sometimes, even more violently than Korea. (Korea has no unresolved modern history of racial eugenics, for example.) Would I say French are racist? Swedes are racist? Japanese are racist? No. That’s unfairly broad. So it’d be narrow-minded to characterize Korea as racist just because the problems are very visible and discussed widely. It’s also unfair to disregard the efforts of many Koreans who are fighting against complacency to correct injustices, especially in the comments of a video that is made by Koreans who are trying to fight racism and bullying. If you don’t see how biased it is to continue labeling “Koreans” or “Korea” as if they are all uniquely or especially problematic, then maybe spend more time learning than judging.
