This is actually an arrangement of one of Vivaldi's concertos, RV 565, so I suppose that would explain some of the stylistic differences.

Having played Vivaldi´s RV 565 concerto for 2 violins and cello, as a cellist, and as a former reluctant organist I nearly fell of my chair when I heard the solo cello entry on the organ at bar 21. The penultimate 16th note (semiquaver in real terms!) was a B bloody natural! With the accompanying Bb/D chord leading into the next bar Gm7 it stuck out like a sore thumb. Apart from that nicely played!

Interesting how I hear motifs in this piece (specifically the fugue) that are also heard in the BWV 541 fugue. It’s almost as if Bach was inspired by Vivaldi. Who would have thought? (of course he was)

This is Vivaldi, from l'estro armonico. The fugue is not very complex (Vivaldi's music is quite plain, albeit very effective), but positively surprising given that he was not really into serious counterpoint.

These organ concertos are a delight. Composers of that era "borrowed" and always listed the original composer. Either as violin or organ concertos, they sound great. Here the organ is fine, registration is excellent and so is the organist. Who is playing, when was it recorded and what about the organ? Great music! William Stead

A great moment in music. Northern Europe in conjuncture with Southern Europe! I first heard this meeting of Vivaldi and Bach in 1969 along with the other concertos of Vivaldi transcribed an in some cases rearranged by Bach. Vivaldi is often criticized as having to rapidly and to often used the cycles. Here Bach relishes in them. What a moment in European history! And I must admit that I have a greater emotional response to the Organ than the Violin version despite or perhaps because of the latent emotional quality. I think that there is a sense of transcendence here that I can not explain. I do not agree with all the 'stops' employed by this organist - especially in the second movement. Yet the third movement - yes this Italian form - is wonderful! Thank you for this post.
@LastHope135
@LastHope135 10 жыл бұрын
I believe that the stops add a sense of anticipation, the sudden stopping of the organ makes one hold their breath in hopes of more of this wonderful piece, I certainly felt a moment of hesitation as to whether or not the song had ended. XD of course I am not fluent in musical knowledge and could be misunderstanding your statement.
@malfactor1
@malfactor1 10 жыл бұрын
LastHope135 Stops on an pipe organ are actually switches that change things like the timbre, or how the organ sounds, and other things like dynamics. The man you're replying to is referring to how the organ's sound changes often in this recording, like in the third movement when it gets a kind of icy sound to it after the beginning. I can totally see why you thought he meant stopping playing though, the more you know.

I don't know why all the argument. It's been quite clear that Vivaldi's music was much loved around Europe and even Bach was impressed by his music. Vivaldi has a lot of counterpoint in his sacred music but it was obviously not his style of composing like Bach. Opus 3 was hardly not played nor copied when it was published.

W.F. Bach was the eldest of J.S. Bach's sons. He had major gambling and drinking problems and was always hard-up for money. This led him to commit numerous atrocities, such as selling off many of his father's manuscripts as wrapping paper, or putting his name on some of his father's works so he could collect royalties. He did that with this concerto, and for a long time (as reflected in this early French edition) it was believed that he was the arranger. We now know that this is not true.

This was also discussed by Plato in "The Republic". A reasonably intelligent person can recognise that music is ambivalent by its very nature. Music is only as good as the end for which is intended.

No, it is clearly Bach. Just from the decided Intro, the intricate contrapoints added to VIvaldi's yet great jog... and, the trademark of the Master: listen to the 2nd mov., near to the end, a astonishing modulation with napolitan 6ths etc, typical of Bach skillness

Note: This was *not* composed by J.S.Bach. For those of us who generally dislike Baroque music (Vivaldi, Telemann, etc.) but who think that Bach was the greatest composer of all time (and there are a surprisingly large number of us), this distinction is important!
@Calamaistr
@Calamaistr 9 жыл бұрын
How can you dislike telemann, i mean sure you can dislike his commercial works such as the esprits animaux but he made some stunning pieces. Its like disliking queen for bohemian rhapsody's forced upon~ness without ever having heard march of the black queen's brilliance.
@Ketzeph
@Ketzeph 9 жыл бұрын
jsh31425 Bach's concerto style is almost entirely based on Vivaldi. The ritornello episode structure he uses is Vivaldi's style. It's very strange to think you could dislike baroque music and ONLY like Bach. Either you haven't listened to much Bach, or you haven't listened to much Baroque music. There are a slough of Bach pieces which don't match their counterparts. Yes, Bach could be argued to be the greatest of the era, but discounting all the other music writ large is crazy. Especially considering that Bach liked the Vivaldi concertos in A minor and D minor SO much that he actually transcribed them for organ. He didn't do it because he was disappointed in them, he did it because he liked them.

Malcolm: Bach here has transcribed a Vivaldi's Violin Concerto. Imagine the conjuncture of an Italian Southern European Warmth with a brilliant German composer's ability to capture the warmth, and yet add a new dimension. Listen to Vivaldi's version. Vivaldi- L'estro Armonico, Concerto in D minor. It will be quite an experience to hear the difference!!!
