"Kɔ́j-gʷú", "The Kiowa People" are an Indigenous American Tribe of the Great Plains area, in the United States. It has been archaeologically recorded, that the Kiowa originated in the Kootenay Region of British Columbia, Canada. The tribe then migrated to Western Montana and continued to move, until they inhabited present day Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Historically, earliest written records indicate Kiowas in the northern basin of the Missouri River, but, they migrated south to the Black Hills around 1650, where they lived with the Crow tribe. In the 'Treaty of Medicine Lodge' of 1867, the Kiowas agreed to settle on a reservation in southwestern Oklahoma. On August 6th 1901, Kiowa land in Oklahoma was opened for white settlement, effectively, dissolving the contiguous reservation. While each Kiowa head of household was allotted 160 acres, the only land remaining in Kiowa tribal ownership today, is what was the scattered parcels of ‘grass land’, that had been leased to the white settlers for grazing, before the reservation was opened for settlement.
