Sadly people don’t realise that no actor can rise above story and screenplay. Similarly main credit should be given to composer and lyricist the singer adds his magical touch of his voice and only enhances the beauty of the melody. Sadly Yesudas has never been a successful music director like SPB

It was Hindi music industry's worst misfortune that it couldn't accommodate a singer of Yesudas' calibre amongst its bosom. Sail Chowdhary and Yesudas'best combination is from the grossly unappreciated songs of the film Anand Mehal.

In my opinion, his successful career in the South (all the four languages) prevented him from staying in Bombay (to be considered by the Bombay composers). That led to him getting a limited number of songs despite that wonderful tonal quality. Also, he did not get the time from his busy schedule to work on his Hindi / Urdu diction. This is a very important factor for songs that are picturised on heroes.

However there is another factor which was Yesudas singing for Ravindra Jain who also used Hemlata's voice extensively which wasn't accepted by some of the powerful singers of Hindi music industry. This led to Yesudas not being quite welcome. It seems far fetched but remember the fate of Sharada, who sang for SJ and Rafi sang a few duets with Sharada. This led to boycott of Rafi and SJ, by the the same powerful elements, though Rafi's boycott was also due to another strong major disagreement in Rafi's case. However Sharada couldn't cope with the competition and quit eventually after a short tenure. Rafi survived because he had a strong cult of his own and of course, there couldn't be and never will be anyone like him. There were some other excellent singers from south and Bengal like Vani Jayram, Chitra, Sandhya Mukherjee if I remember right, who had a very short career in Hindi music world. Your point about Yesudas' rather heavy accent and slightly jarring diction is absolutely correct. Also he was an icon reigning supreme in South, hence naturally he had his own priorities. However, these observations of mine are based on some stray news items and anecdotes which may not be 100% true.
