Why did Mengistu killed the airforce offer who saved his life? The answer is very simple. The offer was part of the plot against him from the bigining and knew the whole thing days ahead if not months and weeks before hand. That means he could have leaked the information well ahead of the D-day and helped foil the coup before hand or gone ahead as planned to shoot down the plane and finish the man. He was a confused soul that didn't help anything including himself. Mengistu thought very clearly notwithstanding how cruel and barbaric it was?

In Ethiopian poletics or history, lying is norm. The Derg generals ploted the coup d'ętat because they lost the wars in Eritrea and Tigrai. They wanted to remove Mengistu because he reffused to negotiate with the rebels. The generals wanted to overthrow Mengistu and negotiate with the rebels because the rebels were winning. Finally, Mengistu himself was negotiating with the rebel discretely.....but it was tooooooooo late.
