Thailand has a long-standing and continuous history of traditional Thai attire dating back to the early Rattanakosin period. The eight contemporary styles of traditional Thai dresses were refined and modernized to align with the current era by Queen Sirikit in collaboration with Thai and French designers less than a century ago.

Now, Cambodians are trying to claim that the 8 Thai Sabai designs invented and developed by Queen Sirikit from the dressing styles of the Thai people in the past are their own national costumes. They have never thought and do not have the potential to develop the Sampot, the national costume of Cambodians, to be as beautiful and diverse as the Thai Sabai. But when they see that the Thai Sabai is beautiful and popular with foreign tourists, they claim the Thai Sabai as their own and accuse Thailand of stealing their national costume and culture. And they also tried to copy the Thai sabai style, but they were unable to cut the Thai sabai uniform to be beautiful like Thailand. It can be seen that the Sabai that the Cambodians try to copy from the Thai style is stiff and thick, and the patterns on the Sabai lack the beauty and delicacy. Thai people themselves have tried to explain the reasons to them many times. But Cambodia's education system is too substandard to make them understand these things.

As a Thai American, I can't say I know much about our history in our attire, but as an artist, if you created something that is unique to your style and someone copied it and claimed that they were the ones that invented it, I would be mad too. It's really scummy to take away someone's hardwork and claim it as your own. At least, admit to being inspired or using it as reference.
