I am glad he survived the war, my dad was in the U.S. Navy during the war. My son in law is serving in the Navy based in Japan. He and my daughter live Japan and its people. Japan has a super professional navy and our strongest partner nation in the Pacific! Proud of you guys!

I read a Japanese language book on the history of Hayabusa. Apparently the early models had problems with wings 'departing the aircraft' during high speed maneuvering, and 20mm cannon shells exploding in the guns, problems which cost the lives of a number of their most talented pilots. They fixed the problems, but rushed the plane to the front before it was ready. Very cool aircraft and much respect to this gentleman for keeping one flying.
Aircraft design was ultimately accelerated by the development money to accommodate warfare. Not making any judgement, for I love beautiful planes. It's lovely to view them outside of personally wagering one's life. Thanks to all who preserve and display such gems.

The best? Compared to what? They had hopelessly weak armament and the initial version of this airplane tended to separate itself from its wings in normal flight. Don't know about the best, but definitely one of the most aesthetically pleasing. Japanese aircraft followed a design philosophy that was fundamentally flawed until it was too late. Some Japanese types could certainly compete, but much too late (N1K2, Ki-84) and not with sub-standard fuel quality. I don't think that you can categorically state that Japanese aircraft were 'definitely the best'.

Japan had some awesome aircraft, as did Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Australia, Russia and the U.S.A.

Thank you soo much for posting...and no cheesey music covering up the cold start. No video of a radial powered aircraft needs music.
Oscar "Hyabusa" is beautiful! Good dog fighter, but only 2Mg. Love the camo! The one in FHC in Seattle has a single blade prop. Gorgeous, even more rare than Zero.

Japanese had some beautiful aircraft! Light and simple. Put the war aside and these planes probably would have made great sport pleasure aircraft without the guns and ammunition in them.

Hoping to one day see KI-27 also get restored to flying condition. It's somewhat slower, but turn rate was ridiculous, like a biplane.

It’s a pity how many thousands of Japanese warbirds were captured after the war, and practically all of them were scrapped.☹️

I’m glad they managed to restore it to its original condition. This’s a great way to teach history.
Lovely looking aeroplane, but can't help thinking that the undercarriage looks rather weak, were they?

I had no idea that an airworthy Ki 43 even existed ! All I've seen until now was a two bladed prop Ki 43-I taxiing but not taken to flight. Does that have the Nakajima Ha-115 radial with the 2 stage supercharger? That onboard starter wasn't original equipment. A starter vehicle started those. I wouldn't know by whose count or the accuracy thereof but according to some accounts of unknown source the Ki 43 claims more allied fighters shot down than any other Japanese type. Not out of the realm of possibility considering it's run during the first year of becoming operational from New Guinea to India and all points in between.
This is a gift to fans of historical aviation and even more a great gift to the millions of boys and girls who have not yet been born and who ever wondered what those moments were like when two men mounted on different planes had to fight to ensure the lives of many more. great contribution to history

Did Saburo Sakai ever fly one? How did it compare to the Hellcat or F4U Corsair?
@n1k1george5 ай бұрын
Sakai was a navy pilot. The Hayabusa was an Army fighter. Most likely he would never have flown one.
@kaletovhangar5 ай бұрын
KI-43-II was definitely on par with Zero in speed, and even better in manuevrability. Against US navy planes of 1943 and on, ehh, turning time and climb speed were it's only advantages, and Hellcat proved climbing speed wasn't really the saving grace.
I honestly doubt that a F4 F-3 (Wildcat) could outturn the Ki-43 (both no flaps of any kind). The Ki-43 has 21.4 m2 wingarea at roughly 2500 kg gross, wingloading 117 kg/m2. The F-4 has 24 m2 wingarea at 3300 kg gross, a WL of .137 kg/m2. Also the power to weight is massively in favor of the Ki-43 (0.48 HP/kg), while only 0.36 HP/kg for the F-4, that being true up to around 6000 m. The F-4 of course is a much sturdier construction with some armor plating and self sealing tanks, all things widely absent in japanese aircraft in general, plus a very puny armament. The aircraft looks incredibly small although it's dimensions are in line with most other fighters of the time, possibly because of the rather narrow fuselage ??

Приятно видеть его в реальном полёте. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5bNoHWthq-ej6c kzbin.info/www/bejne/o4vVmHprnaeritU
It is sad that "Doug" went into Japan at the end of the war and destroyed so much flying history. This what happens when you have stupid leaders, no respect for history.
