I’ve been playing with my Kulp K8-PB and one of the greatest features of this controller and the new versions of xLights is the upload to controller feature you don’t need to enter anything manually now and it does all the channel calculations and configurations for you. I just define my models, use the visualizer to bind the models to the Kulp's outputs and click upload and it’s pretty much done, no calculator involved and all the configuration is set with the correct values. Thank you for all your videos, they’ve helped me a lot, I’m just hoping I can have a small show this year (my first one)

Just saw this video about an hour ago (8:55 pm - 10/08/2023) but wish I would have seen it a few months ago. If so, I would probably have had a beginning show this year. I've watched numerous videos this summer but just couldn't "wrap my arms" around how to do the set up and what stuff I really needed to order, so about mid-August just gave up and hoped I might be able to try again in '24. This video explained things so much better and was more understandable for me. THANKS SO MUCH !! Looks like a K8 would be more than enough for me but was planning on a K16 (only $45 more) just to have some options.

Also would love to see a step by step video of how you actually add your power supply.

Hi There. Thank you so much for your words. No, you do not need a Kulp if you already own an F16V4, unless fo course, you have a special need of running your show out of two controllers. The reason for this video, was to let newbies know that there are more options beside the F16V4, cheaper and that will perform as well within their limitations. You have a long way to go with your F16V4. Let me know if you need any assistance.

Thank you for this. Just bought my first. Looking to go from Vixen to X-Lights. Your instruction made the set up very easy. I also do Fourth of July and Halloween light shows. Can the Kulp be interchangeable from one show to another without the need of purchasing 1 for each season light show and without deleting and added each season show.
@trevilights
@trevilights Жыл бұрын
Hey Jim, Awesome! You are going to love the simplicity of these controllers. And yes, you can have multiple shows depending on the season. This is what I would recomend. In xlights, on the Controllers Tab, you can create/change temporary show folders. You can create one per season and switch between them. Each temporary folder will have it's own layout. The 4th July can have flags, arches, etc. The Hallowen folder can have spoky trees, spiders, etc. Then when you are done adding elements to your show, you can use the xlights Visualise option and upload the setting to your controller with one click. The only thing you will have to do, obiously, is to connect your elements to the correct port for each season.

Hey John, Thanks for watching. It is a very rewarding hobby. It comes with a price but the outcome looks awesome. Everyone pretty much use the Mean Well Power supply. I have a few and have been working for 5 seasons with no issues. How many pixels can you power from one 12v 29A power supply? It depends on the brightness you choose. I do 35% and I can easily power round 4000 pixels. I you are going to go for it, I do recommend you start early in the year, so you have enough time to test and experiment. Hi Trevi, Thanks for the great tutorials. At the beginning of setting up the FPP, you set it to "Player" mode to test some local pattern sequences, but towards the end of the video with setting up XLights to play sequences to the FPP, should we then re-configure FPP back to "Remote" mode? I didn't see you mention the Remote mode during the Xlights tests, but maybe i don't fully understand "Remote" mode and what it's remoted to?

Hey Robert. I am glad you decided to get one, you are going to like it. Yes, once you setup your wifi using your network name and password you will get a second Ip. You can disconnect the ethernet cord and access de K8 wirelessly. You can now move it wherever you want as long as you have a signal.

One more note. I asume that you are creating a musical sequence, correct? This means that the sequence will be playing from the FPP and so the music, so you need to an audio jack on the BB. Hey Dave. Good to hear from you. If the controller is near to your other props then using the same power supply is your best option, of course be careful not to overload it. In my case, I use a secondary supply since my controller sits in my garage. So basically I am paralleling power supplies, something that according to some people you should never, erver do. Below is a link of the power supplies I use, and in the description it says that paralleling is possible. So, I do it. If you want to be on the safe side you can cut the positive cable coming from the controller somewhere at the beginning of your first string, but after the first pixel. I only use two power supplies. The one in the controller and one outside that power all my props. www.amazon.com/Universal-Regulated-Switching-Converter-Transformer/dp/B08LDC41B6/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?crid=1ADFSU8F2K0B3&keywords=12v%2Bpower%2Bsupply%2Bparallel&qid=1668183644&sprefix=12v%2Bpower%2Bsupply%2Bparallel%2Caps%2C151&sr=8-1-spons&th=1

Saludos.

Is each snowflake an individual strand of 48 pixels? I have strands of 100 bullet nodes. So couple I use one strand for 2 snowflakes? I was thinking about trying to make a tree since I have 2000 pixels. But maybe doing a few snowflakes following this would be easier for my first ever project.
@trevilights
@trevilights Жыл бұрын
You are correct. You will have to split you 100 pixel string into two 48 strings to wire the snowflakes. Also you will need add some waterproof pigtails to the wires. A tree is an eye catcher. You can do a full round tree(360 degrees) or half a tree(180 degrees) To make it easier, you can use 50 pixels per strand (2 inch separation) and do a 32 strand round tree or 16 strands for half a tree. Obviously, doing snowflakes is much simpler. You have options.

@trevilights 24 күн бұрын
A few notes here. The Falcon can run all alone if you set it to "Player" Mode. The only downside of this is that I've seen it's performace affected since now is running a sequence, controlling lights and playing music. This is why many people choose to use a Pi to run the show and just send data to the F16V5 and other controllers. The Kulp use a Beaglebone as the brain of the device, It takes care of everything. You will still need to add a Wifi and Audio dongle, but beside that, they are pretty good controllers. I stopped using Falcon and started using Kulp instead. Another nice thing is that you can connect 1500 pixels per port instrad of only 1024 for the Falcon. I've tested 1600 lights on one port sucessfully.

Hey Dave, This is how I plan to do it this year. I am switching my Falcon V3 to a Kulp K8-B just try Kulp. The Kulp will be inside my garage connected 24/7 and running my show from 5pm to 10pm. The kulp needs to remain powered all the time. Outside I have 1 box with two power supplies. This power supplies are connected to a Outdoor timmer similar to the one in the link below. This timer will turn on the power supplies 10 minutes before the show starts and will turn them off 10 minutes after the show ends. I use 10 minutes just in case they go out of sync. Unfortunately the pixels will still be power by the kulp power supply even when they are off, they will still consume some power, but very little. With the V3, this was not an Issue since I could shutdown the V3 and leave the Raspberry Pi on. I am going to so some research to see if we can shutdown the main board on the Kulp but leave the BB on. www.amazon.com/BN-LINK-Outdoor-Weatherproof-Sprinklers-Christmas/dp/B08GQJNXTZ/ref=sxin_16_pa_sp_search_thematic_sspa?content-id=amzn1.sym.4e7a2229-074e-44de-95c4-9fd858f46295%3Aamzn1.sym.4e7a2229-074e-44de-95c4-9fd858f46295&crid=39C1XLIKGWY2V&cv_ct_cx=outdoor+timer&keywords=outdoor+timer&pd_rd_i=B08GQJNXTZ&pd_rd_r=e280f1d3-3e8c-428a-8e55-447ac694572a&pd_rd_w=Tyqnw&pd_rd_wg=aWMBv&pf_rd_p=4e7a2229-074e-44de-95c4-9fd858f46295&pf_rd_r=5S3AC3ZWYAYKWD858JYE&qid=1668525630&sprefix=outdoor+timer%2Caps%2C85&sr=1-4-a73d1c8c-2fd2-4f19-aa41-2df022bcb241-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9zZWFyY2hfdGhlbWF0aWM&psc=1

Hello Trevi. I’ve been wanting to add f16v4 to my existing f16v3 but they only have ready to run which has no space for expansion board. I came across your video and thought of using this temporarily just to support my additional props this year of about 7000 pixels. I’m new and I’m confused about Beaglebone and FPP. I never used that before with my Falcon. I use my laptop to run my show. Do I need to add beaglebone and fpp to run my pixels if I use my laptop? Tks for the advice.
@trevilights
@trevilights Жыл бұрын
Hey Randy, thanks for watching. Not sure what you mean that the V4 has no space for expansion boards. Do yo mean inside the plastic case? You can also add an expansion board for the your V3. Keep in mind that the expansion boards only add more pixel ports, not the number of pixels the V3 or V4 can support. You can also use a second controller to expand your show. You can use a V3 and a V4. About the Falcon Player (FPP), is a sequence player allowing to playback your sequences without a dedicated computer. It can run in a Raspberry Pi, Beaglebone and other project computers. You install the FPP softare in a SD card and insert it on a PI or Beabglebone. The FPP is very robust and allows you to do many other things that you cannot do from a PC. The Raspberry Pi is connected using the ethernet port to your V3 or V4 in order to play the sequences. The Kulp controllers on the other hand are a little different. They use a Beaglebone computer That attaches to the main pixel board (no need for ethernet connection) and it runs the FPP to play the sequences. Same concept but a little different. When you run your show from a PI or BB you take the burden of your controller to do both things, play sequence and control lights. More professional. You can also control 2 or more controllers form these devices. This year I am switching to the Kulp just for fun and to test it.

@@trevilights thank you very much Trevi for educating me. My V3 is already maxed out. I’ve been waiting for V4 for months now but the ready to run case that they have don’t have space for additional battery and expansion board. I want to be able to put together a case that includes expansion and power injection distro board. I’m used to falcon v3 , I don’t want to switch to other brands but your video makes me feel confident in trying Kulp controllers. Sounds like a good alternative. My laptop is dedicated only for xlights and controller. I didn’t use Raspberry Pi when I started because it’s complicated. I bought a laptop just for my show. My question is, if I try Kulp controllers, does it mean I have to use a laptop for my v3 and beaglebone / fpp for my Kulp controller? I use speakers for my show connected to my laptop, do I move the audio connection to beaglebone? Thank you so much for your help as always.

@@randybaron5190 Randy, if you get a Kulp you can do two things. You can use your computer to run your show and add the kulp to your ethernet network and the kulp to the Controllers tab in xlights. You will also need to change your sequences to include the kulp. The other option is similar to the first but since now you have a FPP running in a BB (attached to the kulp) you could run your show from this device and remove your computer from the show. Since the BB does not comes with a sound card your will need to buy one and also get a wifi dongle.

@trevilights
@trevilights Жыл бұрын
in xlights this will be setup as 1 String, 600 pixels per string and 12 strands. Everything fits in 1 port out of the eight you got. If you are going to use port 1 on your Kulp, then just tell the Kulp on port one that you have 600 pixels starting on channel 1 if that's the case, I do not know if this is the first elemets of your show. On xlights set the model to start in channel 1 also. that's it. Do not get confused between ports (8 on the KulpK8). Each port can handle 1500 pixels, more that enough for your tree.

Hi Joe, The connection via Ethernet is only for doing the Initial setup (and to upload large files afterwards) and to get your Wifi going. Once you have the WIfi going, you can connect to the FPP using the Wifi. Since the Kulp uses a Beaglebone device hosting the Falcon Player, it can run by itself. You can connect up to 3 receviers (4 pixel ports).
@trevilights
@trevilights Жыл бұрын
Hola Javier. Cuantos pixeles vas a usar inicialmente? 5,000, 10,000 mas?

Suerte.

Good afternoon friend, could you make a video of this however in spanish? it would make understanding a little easier since I speak from Brazil, Spanish is easier to understand, I'm wanting to import a kulp controller to do my first show. Big hug from Brazil

@@trevilights oh, ok, yes, no problems, it's really hard work, just ask me one more question, please, how far are your led pixels from the controller and what thickness/bite of wire do you use to power the pixels and also for the data cable?
@trevilights
@trevilights Жыл бұрын
@@droni-giovane2163 The first pixel can be as far as 20 -30 feet from the controller. You can buy some f-amp from pixelcontroller.com is you need to go longer. The f-amp amplifies the distance. All the cable for data and power is 18awg.

@trevilights
@trevilights Жыл бұрын
Saludos.
