You have to get your missiles into the laser cone around the target for them to track. You shot outside of it, so the beamriders didn't have anything to ride, thus going ballistic.

Both rockets and missiles use rocket engines (unless you're speaking about something like a cruise missile with a jet engine). The difference is the guidance. Missiles always have some kind of guidance, rockets are unguided and follow a ballistic trajectory (unless it has some sort of add-on guidance kit like the APKWS kit on Hydra rockets). Anyway, lovely video as always! It's always fun to see this kind of missions!

Yes! The Ka-50 measures the wind speed and direction and will include this in the aiming calculation perhaps the windspeed is much different at the helicopters location than down range Also don't forget you have your ABRIS! It has enemy units pre-loaded onto the nav map, this may be helpful in setting up waypoints and target points to quickly identify units With units preloaded you can also see the large patches of blue and red, this effectively shows the units visibility where the colour is in line of sight and the lack of colour may indicate you are in the shadow of line of sight to the target - perfect for finding points where you can effectively plan a position poke up and over an obstacle!

When it comes to ballistic long shots, you can have wind from your location go from right to left. Further afield, the wind where the target is, wind can swing back the other direction. When there is unusual drop or overhead strikes, heat irradiating or cool spots from the ground can affect bullets as well.
@LongShotChannel5 ай бұрын
Yes you are correct. Was not the case here tho. The ballistics of rounds are not simulated with the that accuracy of temperture changes. And you can see the wind is right to left both in my location and in the target location and in between

Great, I love the Black Shark, one of my favourite module, it made me fly other helicopters in DCS. Everyone does this thing their own way, but for sniping with the gun from distance I usually switch to low fire rate, it is more accurate that way. Also it is beneficial to switch the ammo type accordingly, HE for soft targets, AP for armor. You are doing great with that chopper. And that gun and also VIKHRS missiles are the most satisfying things to use in DCS.

FLIR sees heat, glass blocks heat, glass looks black (or white, depending if you use BH or WH mode) FLIR is ALWAYS a processed visual, if it's optics, it's a Light Intensification
@LongShotChannel5 ай бұрын
FLIR sees IR (Forward Looking Infara Red, FLIR) The why thermal is working, it inturpets the IR reflection from stuff and process it into an image. And this is where temperature get into the mix but confuses a lot of people. Objects will provide different IR reflection that is varied with the object temperature. So it kinda "sees heat" But the reason you can't see through glass is not because of temperature, It's because the glass provides an IR screen that thermal can't see through

I wonder why missiles in DCS so seldomly proxyfuze. I figure most of those Roland rockets could have easily taken you out by splash and frag if they proxyfuzed when they passed you by a meter away. Also, as far as I know, missiles are guided while rockets are not. Awesome Video! Also; Could you take an I-16 against a Raptor by any chance? Suggested it to GS 94 times. No idea how DCS models radar signals and missile guidance, but here is my attempt on explaining the behaviour of AA-Missiles constantly missing you by the narrowest of margins: The AA-tracking-radar's signal reflections bouncing of from your helicopter's rotor blades are vectored and doppler-shifted with their relative velocity with respect to the missiles seeker, so the missile's guidance system might be trying to correct for velocity and vector of the target (you), while in reality you're stationary, so the missile trying to pull lead to your rotor blades might have saved you.

35:40 few things here- when you shot that SAM did you have the cannon set to AP ammo? Because if not I could see how HE could not penetrate the armor on that unit. Also you need to pan your helicopter to point the missiles at directly at the target for 800m. It works pretty well to be able to sling them off and not have the reticule directly over the target at 3km but this close you are just pointing them straight into the ground.

regarding wind correction, I think I saw somewhere, the cross wind will push the projectile from bottom, so a right to left cross wind will push projectile's bottom from right to left. which will result in the projectile head goes more to the RIGHT, that's what make it look strange, because right to left wind should drive the projectile to the left, but no, it push the opposite direction.
@LongShotChannel5 ай бұрын
That's incorrect. A bullet will move where the wind is pushing it. The only reason it will move against the wind is spin drift wich will cuase a slight movement to the spin (mostly to the right because that wht most barrels had rifled in them) and slightly up because wind resistance. But all of that will not be enough to totally be opposite to wind drift. Unless there is little to no wind
@stingerutube5 ай бұрын
@@LongShotChannel you might be right at least regarding bullets, I think what I saw was about missiles/rockets that have fins, so wind will hit the fins and cause the rocket to go wind source direction. I forget where did I saw/read this, tried to find it now, but no luck

A rocket is unguided, a missile is guided.
@LongShotChannel5 ай бұрын
That's not the difference tho. BTW there is guided rockets. The difference is what propelling it. A rocket will be send into a ballistic path by It's rocket bost. Like a bullet almost. A missile have a rocke "engine" almost. Will give the missile continuous energy while changing It's path while not necessarily applying to the same ballistics as a rocket... the up and than down arc
@ShadeAKAhayate5 ай бұрын
@@LongShotChannel This is incorrect. Every small to medium sized rocket and missile has an 'engine' which is mostly a glorified booster which usually burns for less than 10 seconds. Some significantly bigger rockets can have more complex engines for prolonged boost as a 2nd stage motor, but 1st stage is principally the same. You can see, say, AIM-120 (missile) and S-5 (rocket) schematics to see that for yourself. Motor parameters might vary, but it's essentially the same thing. So yes, the difference between missile and rocket is in guidance. And yes, if you set up a rocket with a guidance system it's now a missile -- and vice versa.

Thermal sights are sensitive to infrared wavelengths. Anything that is at a temperature higher than absolute zero emits infrared light. Windows, or glass, block infrared light. The lenses of thermal sights and visions systems can't use glass for this reason. They use Germanium. You can't see through a Germanium lens because visible light can't pass through but infrared light can. There is no ambient lighting factor. Image intensifiers need ambiant light, thermals don't. Playing with the brightness and contrast on the Skval can make seeing at night better, but still not great.

Thermal sights cannot see through a closed window? Wait, thermal and infrared sights are not the same? That doesn't make any sense to me right now. Thermal means something with temperature and IR-sight means you can see heat-differences, so thermal sights should be able to see a person behind a closed window because of the temperature differences, right?
@Viper8165 ай бұрын
A thermal sight is a sight that sees in the infrared spectrum. And heat can generate radiation visible in that spectrum and the system is passive, seeing the source basically. Generally a thermal sight can not see through anything that blocks that radiation. Ie a window, even a good tarp. There are solutions for «seeing» through walls with thermals, but they have to be very close to the source, those sensors are being used by fire departments already, for locating heat sources and even bodies i believe. Its not really applicable to an attack helicopter 1-10 miles away. Ir sight is the opposite, you shine ir light on something and it reflects back, so you can see it. Basically just night vision using the moon, ir flashlight or other ambient lighting to see. And the system is «active». Im not an engineer, so take this with a pinch of salt

KA50/52 is an attack helicopter, it is not designed to fight other aerial targets, there are fighters jets for this purpose. It is designed to attack ground targets. You cannot evaluate it in combat with other helicopters, because in a real combat situation it is almost an incredible scenario. As an example of the work of the Ka52, you can conduct a very unsuccessful counteroffensive of the UA army last summer, where most of the occupiers' equipment was burned by Kamov helicopters, KF52 alligator vith "Vikhr" (vortex) rockets.
