I have decided to get into Kukri machete and after checking different ones I decided to buy BK21. It is an awesome tool, works like an axe in good hands. In my opinion, weakest part of that tool is a grip. I have to modify it so it will stay in my hands while I use it. Highly recommended. I love it.

No one ever makes mention about why it's called the Reinhardt. Hank Reinhardt was the leader in top quality medieval reproductions. Since his passing, Windlass, Museum Replicas and Atlanta Cutlery have kind of gone down hill in quality. The fact that Becker produced this khukuri from Hank's designs speaks of his fondness for one of the greats.

It's funny you brought this out today because I was going to tell you about a Fox Kukri called FX-658 that's made out of something called Nitro. Its two inches shorter and a little thicker .20 I believe and looks really good. I told you I would let you know about that other Fox that I took out today. It's an in between kind of knife that can do little stuff and big stuff but lacks the weight being 1/8th. But I will say this, it's shaving sharp and remains so after beating on it pretty good for an hour. Watch out for your legs Chris doing that crazy chopping. Mike

I'm sure the quality is there and this knife is quality because it is a Becker /Kabar. I know from experience that that design is not as good as the other Kukri 's that have more of a bend in the blade instead of being a continuous curve.

If you want to ware the normal sheath don't be stupid and put it next to your pocket on the side of your leg. It isn't where they are supposed to be. You put them somewhat more to the back but not behind you. It will not flop around when you walk like it do when you put it next to the leg. You back doesn't actually move backwards so it will not prevent movement, if you move that much back the hip follow you so it will not hit you. It will not prevent you from getting into your pockets and if you put it next to the leg the knife can cut your hand as you have to go over the blade edge to get to your pocket. The normal sheath is just fine without a dangler, I should say a dangler makes it worse.

It'd be interesting to see a head-to-head comparison between this and the Jessica-X or even between this one and KA-BAR's other Kukris like the Becker Machax & the Kukri Machete, especially given that they're less than half the price of the 21.

Yeah but....touchy subject. The core Beckerheads ACTUALLY believe I "ripped off" the BK9 with JX because I gave Ethan credit for inspiring the idea, and I said I wanted to try make something totally new that would make a a straight 9" blade chop even better. Never mind that a 9" blade is literally the ONLY thing those two have in common. They actually believe I needed PERMISSION to do JX. Because....?? It has the same blade length?? That's funny. Put one in each hand and they are SO different it's laughable. Bottom line: Don't give credit to your design heroes, because their fans will just turn it against you. Besides that, It's touchy testing your own knife against another. I know how JX performs, but I can't say it. It comes down to "what is the intended use of the design?" Most blades used for these tests weren't DESIGNED for these tests, whereas, JX was. JX is a very specific tool though. It's primarily a heavy use wood chopper and splitter that can do more with practice. It's not a combat blade. It's not a machete. It can't compete with those in their areas. There is no "does all" blade. It depends on what the end user NEEDS.

Hey Chris I was just thinking about you said that you were going to put an edge on the 21, and I was wondering what angle you are going to put on it, if you don’t mind me asking? I have been playing with different angles for my bladed tools and I have found that for different tools I do have a slight difference in the grind angles. I put a roughly a 15° to 20° angle on most of the knives that I will not be doing heavy duty work on and I start increasing that angle as the duty of the tool becomes heavier but I still keep it fairly tight and nothing more than 25° Most of the edc collection is at the 15°-20° most of the more utility style knives may keep somewhere between 20° and 25° and that’s also where I keep most of my tomahawks, hatchets and axes. Also do you do anything else to get the best edge possible.

I'd like to see how you sharpened this blade Chris. Was it just a Worksharp job or did you do more to get it the way you wanted it? Also I might have to get this blade now. When I saw it was finally in production, I gasped a little because it seemed like it was never going to go to market. I've kinda wanted a kukri for a while, but it was be between the Cold Steel (way too expensive) and the Ontario (cheaper and I like Ontario knives, but I sometimes question their grind angles. I have a Blackbird SK5 that has offset grinds and it's sharp, but not razor sharp. My RAT-1 is, on the other hand, practically surgical). The BK-21 is sort of inbetween those two and I think it's actually bigger than either (don't quote me). Might jus have to pull the trigger and get it!

I use the Ken Onion Blade Grinder. All the grits except the final purple one. Then I finish with my 6" buffer that has the hard Duro-Felt wheels loaded with green compound. All freehand, on machines where your are sharpening horizontal.

@preparedmind101
@preparedmind101 8 жыл бұрын
Jess-X is a different kind of tool. And I agree on the bushcraft point, but some people like them and this one is great. A lot of people won't try the 43 based on looks. It does have a more aggressive profile when it comes to splitting and chopping, but it would suck as a weapon. This on the other hand, would excel at it. Just depends on what you already have and what you want. This is also going to be the better light brush slicer. Jess-X is good for people that like big knives and hate hatches and axes.
@Player-fr3vc
@Player-fr3vc 8 жыл бұрын
PREPAREDMIND101 Yeah I'm not bashing kukris overall because they are awesome for brush clearing like a real/traditional machete and I think they would be a decent weapon but I am bashing them for their lack of usefulness in bushcrafting situations. I've posted this a lot on your channel over the years and I still believe that the parang is the best large knife/machete design that has been developed. It might lack in the weapon department but it makes up for that in strength and efficient design.

Maybe because of the price. In The Netherlands it's 200 or more euros. You can get choppers that are at least as effective for less than half that price. Becker is a brand name. People fall for that. ESEE is also highly popular. And quite high priced. But a Tramontina machete outchops the Junglas easily. Even Jeff Randall says this.

@@BOOSTEDLASER How's the handle. I'm always a bit leary of flat handles. Isn't it too blocky in the hand. That was my dislike of the Tops Power Eagle. 135 is good. 200+ is too much in my opinion. Then it comes in the territory 'art' and not user. I would never pay 700 dollar for a Busse as some do. I even read where a guy had his Busse chipping where the Junglas did not. Crazy.

@@Ve-suvius In advance : I have tested/own 100s of knives. I own or owned ALL of the Bark RIver "big choppers" I use,not so much collect. I AM a brand and steel snob. I use to turn my nose at TOPS.Dont like 1095 (usually) in 2021.DOnt like TOPS( and others)price structure on old tech ( steels)Dont care for Becker.Or ESEE. These products would be ok at 1/2 the price they charge. Tested the power eagle and El Chete.Did not care for either for a few reasons ( and price). Have tested (in the past) nearly all TOPS.Did not like any ( VS Bark River) I could tell from pics this Basecamp parang was different. I got one for a test ( shootout) vs other "big choppers I was doing. Honestly I got the TOPS to make fun of it (kind of) .To show how they are STILL under quality/design and over priced for what you get. (BTW, I gave TOPS an earfull about the price of it b4 I got..a 2 page email about its 2021..and 200 bucks for 1095 and so on) They messaged me back (nicely,to my shock) saying more or less "You're right in this case" Told me wait 1 week for new price...it dropped ! I expected very little. My mind was blown after holding it..and the first seconds of use. EVERYTHING about it is right.PERIOD The odd handle is fantastic.I used this tool after 4 hurricanes and 3 BAD storms hit my area in about 6 weeks.Even hacked up a 45 foot small (young ) tree that came down,with it.( and all the branches). In total I processed (easy) 1000 lbs of tree stuffs.Even cleaared some bushes and various scrub. The BCP came SHARP !!!!! In the past tops stuff had bad factory edges. ALL of it This came really sharp.Stropped That said I stropped it anyway on a knives plus (green) strop block. I went through at least 1000lbs of various wood stuffs.Ranged from soft to med to pretty hard. I got ZERO chips.It held an edge WAY WAY WAY better than I expected from TOPS and 1095. Not Bark River CPM 3v good..but damn close to BRK legendary A2. ZERO hot spots(gloveless) fantastic handle. Design of the blade ( shape) is perfect....by luck or smart design. The bad :Really with the price drop....none The good :Literally everything. A total out the park home rune (to me) Out chopped my 100-200 "best you can get 4 swedish axes" (hatchets with a 15 or less inch handle) Was more fun to use and was more usefull for other tasks. Last : At first (mind you have or had all of the Bark River 2+ LBS big boys) I found it a bit light,being use to BRK super heavy weights. To me ( again I have or had the big boys) it is a medium duty tool.For 99% of people 99% of the time...this is the best "big chopper" you can get..thats a fact After each use ( when storms took down LARGE branches) I inspected the edge.Not 1 roll or chip.Ended each day still sharp I literally stropped it (just because...why not) for maybe 30 sec a side.Cleaned the edge and threw some oil on it. After the last use I ran it on my Work Sharp belt system (JUST the power strop) with some green compound.Perhaps IDK like 1 min.(Guessing) what could have been done by hand in 5-10 mins. It had no issues but I did it anyway.Some of the "crazy sharp" was gone...this made it come right back.Tool was still useable. Now it is my goto tool.I got one for each house, my bugout bunker and 17 now as gifts. I messaged TOPS (b4 my first use) "Why not 1/4 inch stock and 8-12 ounces more weight...this is toooo small !!!!" I was wrong, it is perfect. I did not care for the Storm Front ,oddly shapped (bigger) tool.At all. We tested this parang vs 3 Kukri ( including BK21) and 6 other "big choppers" All 6 of us Picked the TOPS BCP as #1 On the fence? BUY IT ! (IMHO) TOPS has made 100 failures...and finally got one right. If it was proper CPM 3v,I would marry it :) Not mad at this 1095.World Class heat treat ( and maybe cryo) Peters would not chock me. THATS GOOD Many edges from 99% of MFG...At any price (for whatever reason) GET BETTER (SOMETIMES much BETTER) AFTER A SHARPEN OR 2. Not sure about the BCP as I really just stropped it. I rate it A+++ 5 stars, for what it is. Insane "bang-for-the-buck" now at $135 or w/e it is.May even got on flash sale now and again Semper Fi Gunny

you jerk, chris. needed to get your attention. if you wanna make a knife, make a tanto point baynette for the ar 15 carbine that would double as a baton for cutting wood. you would make a fortune. currently no fitting bayonete for the carbine. emailed tops with the idea, i guess they dont want to make money. hope you steal the idea and do well with it. an assult tanto knife that would work in the woods, that would be cool. smiling just thinking abo6ut it. 1095 1/4 inch thick. all the best to you. (from what i understand the m16 bayonettes do not fit the carbine)
@preparedmind101
@preparedmind101 8 жыл бұрын
Cool idea actually. But when was the last time anyone needed a bayonet? World War 1?
@johndoes5732
@johndoes5732 8 жыл бұрын
+PREPAREDMIND101 very good question. people buy what they want, not what they need. its an accessory for something people like to spend money on. all those bayonette lugs with nothing to attach to it. i had a bayonette for the m16, never used it once, but was still nice to have. a tanto point at the end of a rifle just screams cool as heck. even if you dont understand the mentality of wanting one, hope ypu run with the idea anyway. more importantly, you can add to the idea and make it better, which is why i wanted to tell you about it.
