I’ve had the BK-62 for over a year now and I use it daily. It’s my main outdoor knife. I use for camp cooking, cleaning fish, processing wood, cutting cordage & whatever else comes up. It’s been an outstanding tool. It holds an edge well as Ive only had to hone it twice. It was a little spendy but worth it

I like the honest approach to your videos. A lot of folks would shy away from doing a try stick on video, let alone attempting their first "try". I've seen more seasoned "knife guys" do a lot worse. Good work! Having only held Ethan's Colclesser version, I know he and Ka-Bar did the design justice.
@CaptainAiryca5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I won't deny that I was nervous posting a first attempt at a try stick on the internets... but oh well! It's out there now! I've held both versions at the same time and I can say yes, they did a wonderful job.

Finally!! Someone who tells the story of the knife and ACTUALLY demonstrates the true use of this design. Everyone else on KZbin gripes about how it doesn't have a 90 degree spine. People of that era knew how to start fires without a ferro rod, which was not available at the time. Everyone acts as if you can't survive in the wild without that sharp spine and a ferro rod. WRONG!!

Yay!! I'm glad you appreciated it!! It's a funny thing to get so worked up about haha. I use a striker with my ferro rod so it's no biggie.

Awesome comprehensive review Cap! I love the kephart knife pattern I think there’s beauty is simplicity. I love the fact that it’s an American knife pattern and it’s made in America. I love all the awesome gear from other parts of the world too don’t get my wrong, but our industry workers have been losing jobs for years. I really like how Ethan kept it really close to the original. I know Dogwood Knives got to check out Ethan’s Kephart and is making one out of high end stainless. Thanks for the video Cap! The sound and trystick looked great!

Great review, beautiful knife! I am a sucker for old school, simple knives, especially thinner blades. Too many knives nowadays are too thick to make great slicers. My only gripe is the no 90 degree spine. Of course, old Horace wasn’t using a ferro rod so it makes sense, but I’d definitely add one to mine, at least a small segment, like you said.
@CaptainAiryca5 жыл бұрын
Agreed! yeah, I think a small segment is the perfect compromise so that the blade stays as "original" as possible, if you are into that. :D
@glbwoodsbum25675 жыл бұрын
You are so correct. It is rather difficult to find modern knives with good cutting geometry and simple high carbon steels.
@StevanOutdoor5 жыл бұрын
Ferro rods come with strikers like she showed. Why use your knife for that? I can imagine you would want a portion of the spine a bit sharper to remove bark. But not to use with your ferro rod.
@DutchK755 жыл бұрын
I think this is where people make a mistake about cutting abilities of a knife. Or, "slicing" ability. Blade stock size has no or very little impact on cutting ability. It's edge angle geometry. You can have a knife that's made of 1/4 inch stock that's 36 degree's (18 degrees per side) inclusive that will out slice a 1/8 inch knife at 40 degrees inclusive. Thinness of blade stock means nothing. More obtuse ground knives with more meat behind the edge tend to push through material better. This is why convex knives and axes dig deep so to speak. Here's a perfect example. kzbin.info/aero/PL5F9738431277DC96 Cliff Stamp may be the smartest knife guy on earth.
@glbwoodsbum25675 жыл бұрын
@@DutchK75 That goes without saying, but you aren't really comparing things equally. Equal is: 5mm stock ffg 30 degree bevel VS 2mm stock ffg 30 degree bevel The 2mm is a better cutter every time!!! How could you say stock thickness plays litttle role?

@CaptainAiryca Жыл бұрын
Thank you! You know, I haven't gotten around to figuring out how to mod it the way I want. (I don't have the right tools to do the 90 degree spine) I want to add 1 inch of 90 degree spine about 1/3 way down the blade from the handle, but obviously I've been fine without it. I did add some super thin liners to the handle to add just a pop of color (green) and I love love love it. Other than that I just use it, and strop as needed. It's still my main woods knife that I use regularly! :)

About 4 months ago I left a message for you about. My doing research on the Kephart blade and Mr Kephart . I have since read his book and based upon your comments and wonderful job reviewing this knife 🔪 I decided to bite the bullet and I ordered a Bark River Kephart CPM3V with a sheath from Tops knives because I liked the full coverage where the Kephart knife is fully encased by the sheath. I got the 5 inch blade and the CPM3V steel because I was lucky enough to be gifted with assistance in my purchase for my birthday 🎂. I wish to thank you again very much . I also have just purchased the newly designed Haversac that Blackie Thomas has designed. His bag is more of what I was looking for but again your review meandering maker Haversac has been the biggest influence in my purchase. Whereas the exact Haversac you reviewed wasn't exactly what I wanted it definitely motivated me in my purchase from Blackie Thomas. If you haven't seen his videos I recommend 👌 him highly. Lots of information on woodcraft and outdoor activities. Again thank you so very much for your time and your work in your presentations on KZbin. Your work is very much appreciated. And again if you can find time might I make a request for an update on your BK-62 and your feelings about the usefulness and what surprises you have had . My knife has been absolutely remarkable. Only drawback is I need bandaids almost every time I use it . lol 😆 . It is beyond scary sharp.

Not a typical review. But it was great! Many of the knife reviews on KZbin are focused on how much abuse a knife can take. Which is good to know. But seeing the detail work and kitchen work was a nice way to show off a camp knife. If I could offer just one suggestion, it would be to show a few more closeups of the edge, spine, scales, markings, etc... I really enjoyed the history and narration. Well done. You’re enjoyable and fun to listen to. You have a very calm nature. Thanks for the review. I own probably 6 or 7 Becker knives and after watching this, I’ll probably own one more. I hope all is well with you and your family. Thanks again and take care.

Nice to see a demonstration of bushcraft and food prep tasks in the same video. A knife that can do both is IMHO a pretty good outdoors tool. I've actually got a Joker Trampero which is an obvious Kephart style knife that a lot of people like in that all-arounder vein. I do like the Becker version though, because I think Ethan Becker (who owns an original) really understood Kephart's minimalist thinking and the subtleties that people who don't actually design knives might miss. There are lots of knife styles I like, God knows, but the Kephart is what happens when you strip a thing down to its absolute essentials, and that's very often a thing that yields very compelling results. No surprise people are still inspired by it a century on.

I watched this video again and I really like how it cuts food just as if it was made for the kitchen, yet any kitchen knife cannot do wood type chores without getting damaged and this does a lot. I did start to wonder how well it would still cut a super juicy soft mushy-like tomato and some red meat for stew. My favorite red meat for stew is the beef chuck because of the fat. The knife shop closest to myself carries L.T. Wright so I can check those out in person but not all knives that people love will really be found in one shop so it makes it tough to shop for your main one you love.

@CaptainAiryca5 жыл бұрын
I think this one in particular is more expensive because the finish is nicer (the coating on the others can cover a rougher grind) and the tapered tang, leather sheath, and wooden handles all seem a little nicer than a usual Becker. I am not sure though, that's just my theory. I'm down with other companies doing their versions of this knife! I think it'd be fun to do a comparison video of them all, but alas, I do not have that kind of money haha!

Captain Airyca I considered getting this ka bar for a camping knife but then I found the Mira companion knife. A lot cheaper and seems to be nearly as functional. I have an axe so I really won’t need to hack at wood with the Becker.

When I first got the BK62 I was thinking that the handle scales were way too thin. I really bought this just to have in my collection out of respect for Kephart and the fact that I really like Becker knives. One of my favorite knives is the genesis so I do like the kephart style of blade. I tung oiled the scales to help seal them and add a more "finished" look and feel to the handle. The more I used this knife the more I liked it and now it is my favorite crafter. I no longer think that the handle is too thin and I actually think it feels great even in my XXL hands. I don't really care for a sharpened spine (I know, hard to believe) so that doesn't bother me at all. I like a rounded spine for when I place my fingers on it to assist in fine cuts and shaping. I always have a trekker on me with the saw that easily scraps and does the ferro rod so that is not a problem.

Yes I agree with several of the other comments, IMO this is the best review of the BK62 on YT, and may be one of the best knife reviews, PERIOD. I love the way you start the vid talking about Kephart, then end with the Try stick--developed by a more recent ‘Kephart’--Mors Kochanski. This is a very special knife that almost instantly became my favorite fixed blade. It’s almost as if this knife teaches you how to use a knife. Crazy sounding, I know--but it really does seem to confer skill upon the user--when you pick it up and start to cut with it, the BK62 seems to tap into one’s ‘knife intuition’ or some such. I love your sentence, speaking about Kephart, “He ended up totally ditching librarian stuff....” 😆😆 Great video Airyca, a real credit to this knife and to the memory of Horace Kephart.

Totally agree with Fred B. Your knowledge of Kephart, the knife, and its history is the best I have seen on KZbin. Your review is also very strong in DEMONSTRATING the intended uses Kephart had in mind. I have read and reread Kephart's Camping and Woodcraft volumes. My edition features an appreciation by Jim Casada, a noted outdoor writer of my time. In Volume One of this combined facsimile edition, at p. 167, Kephart shows a Marble's Woodcraft knife. He opines that it is more generally satisfactory than the design he had commissioned. I own one of those. The Woodcraft has a convex grind. Its spine will NOT strike sparks from a good Ferro rod. I may yet purchase the Kabar version of the knife he commissioned.

@CaptainAiryca3 жыл бұрын
Mine was smooth just fine, and the scales are just screwed in so they can be adjusted. I am considering trying out some really thin liners to see if a touch wider would be more comfortable. The 62 is nearly identical to a very used version of the Kephart and so I believe originally the handles may have been a little wider. Just worn down from so much use. It's comfortable enough, but I wanna see if I can get it perfect. :)

Thank you! I'm flattered you didn't avoid this one. I think I'll be doing some more videos like this with other designs. The history part of it is fun for me!

If it had the convex sides, was 4 inches and had brass rivets I'd totally buy one at that price point. You should review the Green River Hunter knife. Kind of cool history and really good knife for the price.

Thank you! It's got me down a rabbit hole on this sort of thing, so I might have to do other videos like this with other knives!

Great job on the video! And kudos to the try stick. For the first time you did way better than I did. My first two I cut in half lol.

Very nice review 😁 It's a practical design. I wish it could've been a convex. Full height convex grinds tend to be my favorite. More human involvement on them however. So I understand the flat grind.

Wow, so it was you who stole those tree limbs from the park. Prepare to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law! Lol great review, I’m currently testing the Kephart, hopefully I’ll have the review up around February.

Very thorough and enjoyable. Good job. I will note that, despite everyone’s desire to use a knife as a wood splitter, I think that Kephart did not hold with this.

Great review, love the knife. Just subbed your channel. Keep up the good work.! BTW HOW did you come up with captain, nickname or military rank?...just curious. Thanks again.
@CaptainAiryca5 жыл бұрын
Thank you!! And Captain comes from over 10 years ago when I was in high school and was obsessed with pirates. Definitely just a nickname that stuck!
