Nipun ji, in your address you have mentioned about two documents, Instrument of Accession & Stand Still Agreement. Initially, Maharaja of J&K had agreed to singn the Stand still agreement. Pakistan agreed and signed it, whereas India refused to sign it and pressed for signing the instrument of Accession. After 15th August 1947, when India became independent and Pakistan came into existence on 14th August 1947, it was Pakistan who attacked J&K breaching the stand still agreement signed by it with J&K State. Then Maharaja of J&K approached the Indian government to help him from Pakistan's attack, but India asked him to first sign Accession document, which Maharaja of J&K did on 26th October 1947 and preferred to join India instead of Pakistan and J&K state became a part of Union of India.

In my eagerness, I have commented a little bit earlier before listening to your entire lecture regarding this above mentioned issue, which you had covered nicely in the later part of your speech. But on another point, I have a different viewpoint than your's regarding the purchase of J&K from the British. In my opinion, when Sikhs had lost to British in the Anglo Sikh war, British had asked for war indemnity. It was a routine practice of that time. Sikh empire appointed Gulab Singh as it's prime minister to negotiate with the British on their behalf. Because of his shrewd skills, it was settled that Sikh empire will pay a certain amount of money to the British. Since Sikh empire was not in a position to pay even that money, they offered the areas comprising Jammu hill state in liue of that money to the British. At that time, Jammu hill state was running it's affairs independently, after the coronation of Gulab Singh as its Raja by Maharaja Ranjeet Singh himself under his suzerainty on 17th June in 1822. At that time, Gulab Singh asked the British to spare the Jammu Hill state and agreed to pay Rs.75 lacks, if it is transferred in his favour. The transfer of Jammu and Kashmir to Maharaja Gulab Singh is not as simple, it's a historical event, involving many dimensions including the strategic and political interests of the British, the weakening of the Sikh state, economic consideration, the neutrality of Gulab Singh in the Anglo Sikh war, and the personality of Gulab Singh. The military capabilities of Gulab Singh enable him to project himself as a formidable ally who could guard the north-western frontier of British India against Afghans and Russians. Also British knew very well that the second Anglo- Sikh war was imminent in the future and for this, a weak Sikh state would be easy to be crushed. So by transferring these territories, the size of the Sikh state would be halved, and also Gulab Singh the most powerful commander of the Sikh empire would also be alienated. Even the sum of seventy-five Lakh was a huge amount to be realized by the British for the territories which they considered as an unproductive and economic liability. Further, the personality of Gulab Singh also proved a detrimental factor as he had cultivated friendly relations with English officers by offering remarkable services, for example during the Afghan disaster in 1841. He was a far- sighted man who had already visualized the downfall of the Sikh empire due to court intrigues and anarchy and thus adopted the stance of neutrality. Thus these were some of the factors mentioned above which led to the transfer of the territories to Gulab Singh.
