Being a part of a Sufi Family and a student of both Sufism and music, I’d like to differ from ustad sb’s opinion about Sufi music. The way the music emerged after the inflow of sufis around 800-1000 Ac is known as the Sufi music. The music administered at the Sufi khanqahs and shrines was different from what was sung outside in its spirituality, content, language, audience, rules. The Sufi’s understood that specific type of music as permissible in religion under certain conditions and rules. This halal music is known as Sufi music. Hazrat Ameer khusro’s invented new styles of music like Tarana and qol (qawali). Qawali was strictly a shrine or khanqah thing for centuries until the recording era began. Chap Tilak is ameer khusro’s composition, no one has copyrights on it. It has been sung for 800 years and will be sung until the day of judgment InshaAllah
