He didn't have a car.(didnot+V1).

The sentence has wrong connotations: Your sentence implies that, you had not dressed well before you went to attend a party (but afterwards you had). I was not well-dressed for the party. Or: I had not dressed appropriately for the party. I had not dressed well when I went to attend the party. I had fallen asleep and so forgot to go to the market/grocery shopping/shopping mall. I forgot to go to the market because I had fallen asleep.

Simple past tense is use in single sentence and when we combine two past sentence by when/ before then 1st part of sentence become past perfect and 2 nd part will be past indefinite ..and if we use after in those sentence then 1st part of sentence become past indefinite and 2 nd part will be past perfect
