The Kabale district health department has initiated plans to control and end pre- eclampsia which has become a silent killer among expectant mothers.
According to the Kabale District Health officer, Dr Gilbert Arineitwe Mateeka, Pre- eclampsia is second leading cause of neonatal and maternal mortality.
Dr Mateeka says that over 40 expectant mothers are diagnosed with pre-eclampsia annually in Kabale District, adding that 4 pregnant mothers succumbed to the disease last year.
Dr Mateeka adds that pre-eclampsia normally affects pregnant woman after the 20th week of pregnancy and sometimes after delivery. The disease normally presents with symptoms like difficulty in breathing, severe headache, visual disturbances and many others, and these may lead to kidney failure, premature births, severe bleeding after birth and so many other effects.
Globally, 500,000 of neonatal and maternal mortality cases are recorded annually.
The Kabale District Health Educator, Alfred Besigensi, adds that as the district joins the rest of the world to commemorate the Pre-eclampsia month, the kabale district health department has partnered with the United States Agency for international Development (USAID), Uganda Health Activity (UHA), Rugarama Hospital among others have organized a health camp at Kabale Cental Market on Saturday 26th May 2024 to create more awareness to on the causes, signs and symptoms and how to manage pre-eclampsia.
Besigensi, adds that during the camp a team of medical experts will also dispense other medical services like free scanning of expectant mothers, family planning services and HIV testing and counseling among others.
Besigensi is now calling on the general public to come and take part of this campaign and receive free services.
