Hello Kaye, how you been doing? Our weather has been up and down with the temperatures, so I haven't began planting my garden yet. As you may already know I grow most of my seedling plants inside the basement, under grow lights. The environment inside is ideal for growing small plants and getting them ready for transplanting. I don't know about a "green thumb", its probably because of over 40 years experience growing vegetables. Thanks for stopping by! C.

This is the first video I have seen on growing Kabocha squash! They are my favorite squash. I grew some from seeds last summer here in zone 10, just north of San Diego. They did really well until the late summer heat got to them, and a few split open, so I am starting them earlier this year. I may have to put up some kind of shade over them even so. Also, do you have a white mildew problem with your summer/winter squash there in Alabama? If so, what do you do about it? Love all your videos and especially the trellises! Going to try some cattle panels this spring! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. I'm a new subscriber to your channel.

Are these Kobocha as sweet as honey dew melon, or just a little bit sweeter than zuchinni? How big does the plant get and how many days from transplant to maturity? Questions, questions, lol. So glad to see you getting around so well, Charles.
@OldAlabamaGardener8 жыл бұрын
Hi Carrie, lets see, you have three questions. 1) Sweet as honey dew melon or just a little sweeter than zucchini? Answer: I don't know. 2) How big does the plant get? Answer: I don't know. 3) How many days from transplant to maturity? You want to guess my answer: I don't know. I'm just playing with you. Now let me answer your questions. 1) Sweet as honey dew? Answer: No, I would say it is about as sweet as a sweet potato and definitely sweeter than a Zucchini. The texture of the flesh is about like a pumpkin. 2) How big does the plant get. Answer: It is a vining plant somewhat like a pumpkin. It can run for some feet if growing conditions are right. Each plant can produce multiple squash. 3) How may days from transplant to maturity? Answer: about 30, as you saw the plants were already blooming when I set them out. There are hardly any bees so I have to hand pollinate them. Thanks for stopping by! OAG

Hand pollination is my best way. I have heard or read that the moth that lays the Squash Vine Borer (SVB) only flies at night (that is true for most moths), so, it may be that I could leave the frame/cover open during the day and close it at night so as to let the bees pollinate the blooms. I take it the 1/4" netting kept the squash vine borers out?
@OldAlabamaGardener7 жыл бұрын
Hi Carlota, I am right now doing an experiment with that. Later I will make a video on whether or not it worked. I will be a guest on Two family Homestead on 18 Sep, at 9pm EST, love to see you there. Thanks for asking that question. OAG

Hi, my kapocha grow extensive long and produce only one fruite per vine. Can you explain?

ive noticed once your plants get big enough, you put them in pots, I was just wandering why you dont just put them in the ground when its warm enough outside, thanks and God Bless

Hello Christina and that is a great question. The reason might be that my ground isn't ready yet or it might be that it is still too cold or that we might still get a frost. Or maybe I am just too busy planting other plants and these got a little larger. Thanks for stopping by. OAG

Did the frame end up keeping the bugs out?
@OldAlabamaGardener5 жыл бұрын
I did get a crop of squash. The problem with a frame like this is it blocks out the bumble bees which are needed for pollination. OAG

Thank you for the reply, I think I’m gonna give it a try this spring 👍🏻

Do you just leave one squash per plant?
@OldAlabamaGardener7 жыл бұрын
Hello and welcome to my channel. No, I let as many set as the plant wants to. But, if you did keep only one or two squash on the plant, I think they would get larger. If you haven't already, **I invite you to subscribe** and watch as I upload more videos during the summer growing season. Thanks for stopping by. OAG

Hi Patrick, I like it best as tempura. Slice it about 1/4 inch thick, make a thin batter, dip the slice in the batter and fry in oil. Ask the Japanese woman about it, she will know what I am talking about. Thanks for stopping by. OAG
