Hello Kaye, how you been doing? Our weather has been up and down with the temperatures, so I haven't began planting my garden yet. As you may already know I grow most of my seedling plants inside the basement, under grow lights. The environment inside is ideal for growing small plants and getting them ready for transplanting. I don't know about a "green thumb", its probably because of over 40 years experience growing vegetables. Thanks for stopping by! C.

I have been binge watching your videos for about an hour and a half now, and I just have to say thank you so much for passing on your knowledge. I live in Grand Rapids Michigan where it is bitter cold right now so it makes my heart Happy to think of warmer weather and home grown veggies. Thank you kindly for your reply. But to late, i already planted 4 seeds :)))! I couldn't wait because I was looking at your garden as you drove around to get to the planting area. It was so beautiful and I thought it was such a wonderful thing to see things that we planted, nurtured, see them grow, and blossom. Such an ignorant fool I was, i have never looked at things that way. Thank you. P.s: the rest of the seeds I will let them dry out then try again if the first 4 didn't germinate

I encourage you to not be too hard on yourself, think of it this way: you didn't know! And yes, it is wonderful to plants seeds, nurture the plants and then harvest the vegetables. I want to try to plant it in a pot indoor and hoping it will germinate and survive the winter so I can plant them in the backyard in the spring. Hello Leann, and welcome to my channel. I would dry the seeds for a couple of weeks. To keep the plant growing during the winter (if you are in a cold place) you will need a grow light. Karl, I don't have any more seeds this year. You can find the Kabocha in oriental food stores and in some stores like Whole Foods or Earth Fare, both are chain type stores. You can get the seeds out of them and they will grow. The bitter melon will grow out 10 to 12 feet. Nothing will bother the plant because it is too bitter. OAG

So it looks like this plant prefers full sun? no trellis or anything needed, huh? Just plant them right in the ground? I'm in Hawaii growing these for the first time. From seed, it took about 1 month for my plant to get 3X as big as yours did when you planted in the ground.. so it seems like this plant LOVES the warm. The plant is still in a pot on my patio, need to get it in the ground. Thanks for this video, you're awesome

This is the first video I have seen on growing Kabocha squash! They are my favorite squash. I grew some from seeds last summer here in zone 10, just north of San Diego. They did really well until the late summer heat got to them, and a few split open, so I am starting them earlier this year. I may have to put up some kind of shade over them even so. Also, do you have a white mildew problem with your summer/winter squash there in Alabama? If so, what do you do about it? Love all your videos and especially the trellises! Going to try some cattle panels this spring! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. I'm a new subscriber to your channel.

Are these Kobocha as sweet as honey dew melon, or just a little bit sweeter than zuchinni? How big does the plant get and how many days from transplant to maturity? Questions, questions, lol. So glad to see you getting around so well, Charles.
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Carrie, lets see, you have three questions. 1) Sweet as honey dew melon or just a little sweeter than zucchini? Answer: I don't know. 2) How big does the plant get? Answer: I don't know. 3) How many days from transplant to maturity? You want to guess my answer: I don't know. I'm just playing with you. Now let me answer your questions. 1) Sweet as honey dew? Answer: No, I would say it is about as sweet as a sweet potato and definitely sweeter than a Zucchini. The texture of the flesh is about like a pumpkin. 2) How big does the plant get. Answer: It is a vining plant somewhat like a pumpkin. It can run for some feet if growing conditions are right. Each plant can produce multiple squash. 3) How may days from transplant to maturity? Answer: about 30, as you saw the plants were already blooming when I set them out. There are hardly any bees so I have to hand pollinate them. Thanks for stopping by! OAG

Really like planting kabocha and other winter squash, but I have to plan sparingly this year. Squash vine borer are just relentless.

I too have a problem with the squash vine borer, that is why I made the PVC/bird net frame to cover some of them. I plan to make more of the frames and plant later Kabocha. Thanks for commenting on this video. OAG

I love your channel!!! I have never grown or eaten this squash. How did your frame work out? The squash under the frame fare better than the squash in the open? Do you have a video showing the growth and harvest of this squash? I love your harvest videos because I then get to see how to cook the harvest.

The frame worked but it became difficult to raise and lower it as the vines grew.The frame is to exclude the squash vine borer, not for squash growth. Sorry, I have only the one video.

@@OldAlabamaGardener That’s ok. Thanks for getting back to me. Your property is beautiful. I think that was the first time I have seen it. You are amazing with all that you do and the wealth of knowledge that you have. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge on KZbin.

For the last three years my Squash & Zucchini has been hit with the Squash Vine Borrower. I have considered netting but I really don't have time to hand pollinate. What method do you use to insure pollination?
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 8 жыл бұрын
Hand pollination is my best way. I have heard or read that the moth that lays the Squash Vine Borer (SVB) only flies at night (that is true for most moths), so, it may be that I could leave the frame/cover open during the day and close it at night so as to let the bees pollinate the blooms. I plan to make more of the frames and give that a try. Thanks for commenting. If you haven't already, I invite you to subscribe and watch as the summer growing season comes on. OAG

OAG, do you wash/sanitize your gallon pots or your 10 x 20s? I have heard some do, and some don’t
@OldAlabamaGardener
@OldAlabamaGardener 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Brent, No, I don't wash or sanitize them. I am thinking the main reason you would want to do that would be to reduce or eliminate a problem called "Damping off", that is when the stem of the plant gets a mold, fungus or soil borne disease and dies. As I don't use soil in my pots or trays, I never have a damping off problem. Thanks for an excellent question. Brent, I like to know about where my KZbin friends are located, so, about where do you live? OAG

Thanks Brent. Many years ago, I lived north of Kokomo, in a small town called: Bunker Hill. After I went into the Army in 1956, I never lived there again. Wonderful summers, winters very cold with a lot of snow. In your area is some of the very best soil for growing vegetables, I think it is soil that was left by the glaciers. Thanks for watching my videos. Anything in particular you would like me to make a video on? OAG

I take it the 1/4" netting kept the squash vine borers out?

Hi Carlota, I am right now doing an experiment with that. Later I will make a video on whether or not it worked. I will be a guest on Two family Homestead on 18 Sep, at 9pm EST, love to see you there. Thanks for asking that question. OAG

Hello Christina and that is a great question. The reason might be that my ground isn't ready yet or it might be that it is still too cold or that we might still get a frost. Or maybe I am just too busy planting other plants and these got a little larger. Thanks for stopping by. OAG

I did get a crop of squash. The problem with a frame like this is it blocks out the bumble bees which are needed for pollination. OAG

Hello and welcome to my channel. No, I let as many set as the plant wants to. But, if you did keep only one or two squash on the plant, I think they would get larger. Hi Patrick, I like it best as tempura. Slice it about 1/4 inch thick, make a thin batter, dip the slice in the batter and fry in oil. Ask the Japanese woman about it, she will know what I am talking about. Thanks for stopping by. OAG
