A lot if illusions for westerners. Outside from international hotels and the university of Kabul the country was medieval. I traveled through Afghanistan in 1976 and 1978. Alltogether about 2,5 months. I did not speak with any female in that time and I saw only few in public. If you saw them, a lot were wearing Burkas. This was a common view. The difference from the later times was that, although the country was medieval, peace and hospitality reigned everywhere. Tens of thousands of hippies, who completely ignored Afghan views of orderly behaviour, could cross the country on their way to Kathmandu without any danger. That was the real difference.

I've heard that from a Westerner who lived there for 4 years with her family back in the late sixties, early seventies. She loved the country and the people, but according to her, it was overall a very, very conservative society. They went to neighboring Iran for vacation and thought that Iran was way less conservative and more laid back...although by Western standards, Iran was also quite conservative.

All the muslim nations looked like that, and then it changed with the Iranian revolution and the rise of the taliban which the muslim brotherhood used to their advantage everywhere else, and still do into the West. The more open and fun at the time, the less now: Kabul but also Beirut, Tehran, Cairo, Baghdad, Benghazi... all looked like modern nations used to, at least on the surface. Only the Arabian Peninsula was stricter. The Shah of Iran had predicted this. The tide now is in reverse, even the most advanced nations look like the 3rd world nowadays.

The last two presidents of Afghanistan were from same tribes and families of Barakzai and Mohammadzai and their grandfathers were same going back to past. Karzi called taliban brother and saved them under his power so they could gain power. Ishraf qani Ahmad zai was not letting army to kill taliban and released them all from prisons. These two people killed dreams of every citizen of Afghanistan. And are shame to zai tribes and families.

That'ss just a sad mimicry of western european ideals. Wine and alchohol production stretched from Iranian plateau, to the Caucasus, Arabia, and all of West Asia in ancient times. This video fills me with so much sadness. The Americans gave them some hope back prior to 2020 but decided to protect the Islamists instead of promoting the openness that prevails in more secular Islamic nations like Pakistan, Turkey, Malaysia, and yes, vintage 1970s Afghanistan. The pullout was a sham and unnecessary. No Americans died in the last two years of the war until the Abbey Gate disaster. It took us 40 years of occupation to turn South Korea into a thriving western democracy and economic powerhouse. Had the US stayed in Afghanistan and used the same strategic thinking they did in Korea, there would still be a hope for Afghanistan to recover from the 40 year disaster of war, jihad, civil war, Islamic extremism, and US and Soviet meddling. Alas, it is now a lost cause....

Turkey is currently just ok, but as the Islamists continue to keep having more babies, you are going to see a change happen there as well. Malaysia pretty much discriminates against its non-Malay citizens and as the number of those minorities drop, it will have to deal with the reckoning coming in the decades.

Let's be honest - only a small elite enjoyed a Western lifestyle. I also don't expect there would've been more than a handful tourists. A few selected clips do not paint the whole picture. However it's interesting that this was permitted by law, for what seems like a blip in the history of Afghanistan.

@@Bernd-m2o NATO could have developed a new strategy. Say creating a commission of Afghani leaders and NATO leaders to develop plans for a better constitution. Say a constitution that used federalism. Not to mention developing plans that create strong property rights for the Afghanis, such as what was done in Peru in the early 1990s with the help of an economist named Hernando De Soto. That property right policy helped to not only defeat a guerrilla group in Peru called the Shining path, but it also helped to make Peru more prosperous.

@@MrTappug How about leaving the Afghans alone and let them do their own thing? The tragedy of Afghanistan is rooted in too many foreign interventions. First the brits showed up gifting them with "western civilization", then the Soviets came along bringing them the gift of socialism and most recently the Americans tried to shuffle democracy down their throats. They never had a chance to develop their own political culture and now they hate the west, socialism and democracy because these things were forced upon them by some aliens who pretended to be well meaning, but were exclusively concerned with their very own interest. Afghans are fed up now with this stuff that's all alien to them.

They were secular, liberal and culture was same like western while Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE,Bahrain they preserve their Islamic culture and didn't adopt western culture. Now Saudi,Qatar, UAE are one of the most richest country while these countries are mostly poor 😂. But now they also trying to became western.
