You will be disappointed with this custom as lots of people practice it because they are ignorant of Islam. Just to introduce myself I grew up in Mauritius, my grand parents had a Darga. It’s a place where all the preparations for this festivity are done. As a kid I even helped to build the Bourak which is a bamboo and paper horse with a female human head. I went to Saudi Arabia for my studies where I discovered that Sunni Muslim in Mauritius are wrong celebrating l’Achoura this way. I questioned some high Islamic studies professor (Imam and Hafiz coran ) about it and they all said it is not a Sunni custom as it’s srictly forbidden to shed human blood in sacrifice to Allah and also forbidden to make statues specially with human attributes in the name of Allah. As we all know it is mentioned in the coran that when the prophet went to the Sinai to receive the commands of Allah some of his followers built the statue of a cow and they were severely punished by the prophet and as a result they were banned from the land that Allah promised them. In short I will explain to you the difference and the reasons between the celebration of Achoura for Sunni Muslim and Shia Muslim. Sunni Muslim reason for celebrating Sunni Muslim celebrate Achoura as the tenth day of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar. It marks the day that Moses ( Prophet Moussa) and the Israelites were saved from Pharaoh by Allah creating a path in the Sea. The World Sunni Movement celebrates this day as National Martyrs’ Day of Muslim nation under the direction of Syed Imam Hayat. The way you see in this video is absolutely prohibited in Saudi Arabia and Morocco by Muslim law. Way of celebration Saudi Arabia and my country Morocco celebrate Achoura by fasting and reading of the coran as same was done by prophet Moussa to thank Allah for saving him and his people from the Pharaon. Shia Muslims reason for celebrating For Shia Muslims, it marks the day that Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, was martyred in the Battle of Karbala fought on 10 October 680 (10 Muharram in the year 61 AH of the Islamic calendar) between the army of the second Umayyad caliph Yazid I and a small army led by Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, at Karbala, modern day Iraq. The Battle of Karbala took place within the crisis environment resulting from the succession of Yazid I. Immediately after succession, Yazid instructed the governor of Medina to compel Husayn and a few other prominent figures to pledge their allegiance . Husayn, however, refrained from making such a pledge, believing that Yazid was openly going against the teachings of Islam and changing the sunnah of Muhammad. He, therefore, accompanied by his household, his sons, brothers, and the sons of Hasan left Medina to seek asylum in Mecca. Way of celebration As you see in the video “ghoon” So the big question is are Mauritian Muslims Sunni or Shia or doing things out of ignorance? If anyone doesn’t agree with what I say I can give proofs with the support of Islamic scholars.
