Any position with this much responsibility should have a degree of self sacrifice to ensure that only those with truly good intentions are interested in the role. I think all political positions should be primarily benefit based and offer just enough money to survive, along with banning investing for both you and your family to limit conflict of interest, and full financial transparency to insure no bribes. I’m not sure any of our current politicians/government roles would still be interested if they couldn’t get rich doing it, which would open it up for actual humans to get in and start setting everything right.

I couldn't imagine being a fresh graduate who is passionate about urban planning then you are faced with the reality of bureaucracy preventing much needed changes and the low salary. Actually, f that. I would just go into something like sales to support myself and play Cities Skyline to satisfy my urban planning itch.

I feel like she's sacrificing pay for location. Many cities on the East coast require a masters as a minimum but she could take her Masters elsewhere and make more but it won't be as interesting as New York City. her job might require more from her compared to New York City since New York City has so many entities

Hmmm, yes working in New York will look good on your resume, but working in Europe or aspiring developing countries would look much better... Her income, divided by 40, is $1,550 in rent she could comfortably pay. If she's in a relationship with a partner that makes as much as she does or has a roommate, they can easily pay $3,000 in rent a month. That isn't so bad in NYC.

my uni only required a certain level of math (for statistics) ... we haven't gotten too advanced but as long as you're fine with tech (for GIS), you should do alright in my course. There is some drawing, but that isn't for aesthetics, moreso just to get ideas across that would take forever to describe in words .... some poster design and affinity for very basic 3D modelling might make your presentations more convincing though 😋

@@darks.6211 GL! My uni was nice enough to have an entire course introducing us to ArcGIS and what makes a good (or at least acceptable) map which has been great for learning the basics of that software ... if you think you'll be learning ArcGIS, maybe you already have ESRIs tutorials to look at? (Probably not follow, because licenses but at least to give you an overview of topics and get you ahead of the curve) As for drawing, most of what we've done so far (in the first year) is draw arrows and outlines on maps, but on occasion a rough visualisation of what sort of a space you're envisioning tends to become relevant to communicating the feel you're proposing for a place (make it easier for people to envision being in that future, if that makes sense?). More generally being able to communicate things visually and make plans look pretty tends to come in handy for presentations :p Also useful might be some sense of photography (or sketching) as ways to do fieldwork (capturing the place you'll be concerning yourself with) ... though this is drifting into the space where just any visual experience (observing and expressing) will probably be helpful :p Hopefully this advice applies at least somewhat cross-program, I only know my own so take all of this with a grain of salt

@@imperialsecuritybureau6037 I'm doing a Master for Urban Planning at USC right now. Of course it's left-leaning because you have to plan amenities and infrastructures for the ENTIRE city, including downtown, police and fire departments, public and community schools,...If you want to study and work in a more centered environment I would consider a degree in Public Policy or Public Administration.
@HardwiredZ06

@@tonysoviet3692 current planning is more centered than long range or sustainability planning if you're looking for something less liberal minded. Current planning is just project management and looking for functionality, feasibility, and consistency with existing policies.
