I had a few hours going through Sochin with Sensei Kagawa many years ago on a one to one basis and he was extremely encouraging and very strict . He will always invest in those who give effort . A hard taskmaster but a decent man . I was angered by the allegations made against him in recent times as it smacked of a generation incapable of accepting the rigours that karate demands for excellence . You get out of karate what you put in . One of the very best out there and I can think of only three Sensei who surpassed him , Sensei Kase , Sensei Shirai and Sensei Kawasoe . Kawasoe for me was the technician , Kase the most innovative , Shirai the most powerful and has an aura about him . Now I look at the Karate world with a degree of sadness . It’s gone from moulding formidable fighters and human beings , to creating tiktok fighters and Instagram karate dancers . The WKF to me have ruined Karate and made it just about aesthetics and nothing more . Kumite is cotton wool wrapped volume technique fighting with sofas on their hands and feet . Simply dreadful .

Aptly said Sensei . The allegations against Kagawa Sensei is most unfortunate - the current generation seems to lack the attitude to accept and survive tough training regimens . I had the privilege of training since 1982 in JKA and thereafter with Masters from SKIF, WSKF et al - all emphasized hard training with focus and devotion. I remember my training under Kanazawa sensei , Tanaka sensei , Osaka sensei , Kasuya sensei et al.. It was tough to digest what we were taught in that crucible of learning - but we appreciate and developed ourselves. Injury and punishment was common - but we bore it in our stride . Sometimes we used to put our lives on the line - in kumite , specially when training under the likes of senseis Tanaka , Kagawa , Omura and other senior instructors.. Todays karate ka - by and large seem to lack that discipline and inclination towards "budo" karate - its a travesty of what Karate was.. WKF has diluted karate into an athletic sport , complete with theatrical performances , ultra-long dramatic pauses in kata and watered-down kumite.. i fully endorse your views.. Just shared my personal take on this ... Oss and respects , from India .

@@arijitchakrabortyca3863 spot on assessment and I’m amongst many who competed at a higher level in the 1980’s and 1990’s who are highly critical of todays situation . Yes the WKF kata is performing art and little else to it that resembles Budo . The timing now has been thrown out of the window for posing and the facial expressions are reminiscent of silent movie villains . It’s comical and very sad . I remember the shinai hits for getting kata wrong . I recall having a sword tip placed between my shoulder blades to stop me moving back and hold my ground to block and counter . Slaps on the forehead to stop me dropping my head in kihon . Training with sensei Kagawa and Naka in York , UK with the university students he brought with him in 1990 . It’s was a hotbed of hard training and very physical spirited kumite . Sensei Kato my sensei at the time organised it . The golden age of karate and marvellous times . Sad so sad to see how they’ve diluted it so much .

@@markwalker4142 Yes indeed its an alarming situation. Also in my humble opinion , the indefatigable instructors you have referred to and the ones we have trained under , are getting older . The perspective , teaching style is undergoing radical change - from "Sensei " to "Coach" .. I recall my training in Japan wherein for any of our technique which lacked power or speed - retaliation was instant from Sensei - a hit with Shinai . Unforgiving teachers - but yes, whatever I am today - a lot of it is due to those hard training sessions. Kata and kumite then were so related and connected - Yoshitaka Sasaki sensei, then 6th Dan from JKA said in one of his harsh sessions - " any technique that has little or no practical application in kumite is useless .." so we put in our sweat , blood to attain that one " perfect" waza - tsuki , uke , uchi or keri..- ikken hissatsu .. today the WKF kumite - the less said the better.. also I guess that old Samurai ethos or missionary zeal in older instructors is sadly missed in many of today's younger instructors . The likes of Senseis Enoeda , Kase , Asai , Kanazawa , Abe , Stan Schmidt , Kato et al - probably will never be seen again. Guess its the same with other styles too... lastly - students are now seen as customers / clients with business and commercial aspect as the overriding factor.. Hence this gradual decadence of Budo karate , also the JKF stand against the immensely talented Kagawa sensei , perhaps propagates a wrong signal . Rarely do we see today's Sensei s who push students hard , rather posting seminar photo on social mefia seems to be their only motto.. Yes many of us are critical on what is happening in the karate world today and the realpolitik of WKF - but our concern indeed is genuine. Even JKA 's perspective on Karate-Do has changed significantly ... have seen instances in India where student ( customers) quantity has swept off quality . Feel very sad sometimes ... just trying to train daily as hard as possible , Arigato .. Oss ! Respects from India
