Art Journal One Flip Through

I started this art journal in January 2016 and found some things that helped me continue to art journal.
This is a flip through of the pages and some thoughts of how I will continue art journaling in the future.

I have been working on trying to learn and understand collage for a few years now. As much as I love collage, I just haven't been able to create the types of collages that I like. A year ago I put together 4 Real Simple magazines into one huge collage/glue book/art journal and I have been having so much trouble making much of it "work" for me. A couple weeks ago I decided to just play with glue books using old regular journals and, much like you in this flip, I decided to just play and not be all that concerned with how the pages turned out. Strangely enough, as I was playing in the first one, I started making collages, and enjoying how things were going together, fitting with everything else. I was also working on my first "junk journal" made completely out of the card stock junk mail I have been saving for years. Over the last 5 years since I first started with art journaling, I have tried different things but I am not fond of using people or sentiments or any kind of writing in my art journals. This glue book I have started and almost completed has brought back so much joy that I have been missing this horrible 2020 summer, and I have started adding lace, trims, and other things I never used before because I just did not know how. How much easier it became when I allowed myself to just play and not care about rules or how things turned out. This glue book is turning out really special and I think artistic without my even really trying. Maybe that is finally the secret I have been looking for for all these years in collage. Just play.

Hello Karla, I don't think I've ever seen any of your art journals that I didn't like. But I do understand what you're saying about "styles" changing, everything is supposed to change, so that means - you are doing good. You sure have inspired me, and I truly appreciate it. Yay!!! When you said that you didn't know how many pages it was, I started counting. Two signatures had 14 'pages'... 7 sheets of paper - if that is consistent, I think that comes to 216 sides! That is quite a book, Karla! I am making a junk journal - 5 signatures with about 11 pages each. It will NOT (I don't think) take 3 years! But we will see. I do need to think of it as process and not finish, though. I tend to rush things and then wish I had done this or that in the process. I am not wanting to make a stack of them to sell - I am making one to enjoy! So good to see you!

Thanks Kathleen! Yes eight signatures, 7 pieces of paper in each signature, I get 224 pages if you count them like book pages. It did end up bigger than I had intended!

@@Kagedfish LOL! Bad math on my part! Your thin papers do keep it lighter! LOL! I think it was a journal of no regrets - whatever happened was fine! I was having some insights while watching it... but didn't take notes! I'll have to watch it again when this anti-migraine pill wears off! I am good for nothing right now! LOL!

I find I go through phases of telling myself it’s about the process... and in those moments I throughly enjoy my art but then the little voices creep back and I start comparing myself.... it’s so frustrating. I’m still working hard at silencing that critique and allowing the process to shine through !

No I haven't but I really should!! I did put the dates in for this one and hopefully I will continue in the future. I usually make videos showing the beginning of a project and then a show and tell video when it is finished so I have some idea of the dates.

I don’t see anything wrong with this? It’s so gorgeous! You say this is a Art Journal? I thought it was a collage journal? Can you explain in a video? I guess I’m trying to learn to make a collage journal? I made myself a journal out of watercolor paper. I watched Denise Lushs tutorial. How do you start with all that white staring at me? Why can’t I find Stabilio pencils? Black and white? Where are the white and black POSCA markers? Fort Knox? Anyway this journal you have is fantastic! I wish I could do that well.....😬😁👍👏👏👏🌹💯‼️

Thanks so much!! in my world a collage journal is just gluing bits of paper or images together. an art journal is when you add paint. I am working on a simple art journal for beginners series, hope to get it out this month. Stabilio All pencils can be found at Blicks, or online only, they don't carry them at Michaels, Joanne's or Hobby Lobby. and I think the same for the Posca Pens, I was given Posca pens, haven't found any to buy myself either! keep trying to art journal, you will get that moment of "hey I like this!" if you keep at it!

I used junk papers, just anything I had on hand, there was one page of yellow pages that was so thin it crinkled with the paint. It was a learning project and all the "mistakes" made it special for me. Thanks so much!

Thanks so much!! Pages are 5 and a half inches by 3 and a half inches. You might not want to make the spine that wide though!
