What is Sexual OCD?
Sexual OCD is a type of OCD that is characterized by obsessions and/or compulsions related to sexual thoughts, impulses, or behaviors. People with Sexual OCD may have obsessions about committing sexual acts that are considered morally wrong or unacceptable, or they may worry that they will contract a sexually transmitted disease. They may also have compulsions related to excessive washing and cleaning, checking for signs of illness, or avoiding contact with potential sources of infection. People with Sexual OCD often experience a great deal of anxiety and distress related to their obsessions and compulsions.
The Symptoms of Sexual OCD
Sexual OCD is a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder that is characterized by unwanted and intrusive sexual thoughts or behaviors. People with sexual OCD often fixate on things like whether or not they are attracted to the “right” people, whether they are engaging in the “right” activities, or whether their sexual thoughts and behaviors are “normal”.
While everyone has unwanted and intrusive thoughts from time to time, people with sexual OCD can’t seem to shake these thoughts and they often cause a great deal of anxiety. As a result, people with sexual OCD may start avoiding situations or people who trigger their obsessions in an attempt to reduce their anxiety. In severe cases, people with sexual OCD may become totally isolated and may not even leave their homes
How to Treat Sexual OCD
If you think you might have Sexual OCD, it is important to seek professional help. left untreated, Sexual OCD can lead to anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. If you are in a relationship, your partner may also suffer from your condition.
There are different types of treatment for Sexual OCD, but the most effective is exposure therapy. This type of therapy gradually exposes you to the things that trigger your OCD, helping you to learn to control your anxiety and fear.
