1996 वर्ल्ड कप ने यह सिखाया की अगर आप मेहनत करें तो आप बड़ी से बड़ी टीम को भी हरा सकते हैं। इससे पहले श्रीलंका ने जितने भी वर्ल्ड कप खेले उनमें बुरे तरीके से हारकर बाहर हुई थी लेकिन श्रीलंका के उस वक्त के कोच डेव वोटमोर और अर्जुन राणतुंगा ने पूरी मेहनत की और टूर्नामेंट की बड़ी बड़ी टीमों को हराया और बिना कोई मैच हारे वर्ल्ड कप जीती। 1996 में सनद जयसूर्या और कालू वितरना ने ODI क्रिकेट की दिशा और दशा ही बदल दी और सिखाया की कैसे शुरु के 15 ओवरों में फील्डिंग रिस्ट्रिक्शन का फायदा उठाकर ताबड़तोड़ बल्लेबाजी की जा सकती है। हालांकि भारत रत्न सर सचिन तेंदुलकर ने ओपनिंग करके 1994 में ही ताबड़तोड़ क्रिकेट की शुरुआत कर दी थी लेकिन 1996 में श्रीलंकाई ओपनरों ने जमकर उस को आगे बढ़ाया। 1996 वर्ल्ड कप फाइनल में हार ऑस्ट्रेलियन के मुंह पर करारा तमाचा था। क्योंकि ऑस्ट्रेलिया के प्लेयर्स हमेशा से ही बड़बोलेपन में अजीबोगरीब बयान बाजी करने के लिए मशहूर रहे हैं और साथ ही 1996 वर्ल्ड कप से कुछ महीने पहले ही जब श्रीलंका ने ऑस्ट्रेलिया का दौरा किया तो वहाँ पर ऑस्ट्रेलियाई क्रिकेट बोर्ड और उनके अंपायर्स ने श्रीलंकाई टीम को नीचा दिखाने की पूरी कोशिश की। मुरलीधर हो या अर्जुन रणतुंगा सभी के साथ बुरा व्यवहार किया गया। 1996 वर्ल्ड टूर्नामेंट के दौरान अर्जुन राणतुंगा ने खुद कहा था कि मैं चाहता हूं कि फाइनल में ऑस्ट्रेलियाई टीम से हमारा सामना हो और वही हुआ।
