The Silence of the Lambs (1991) ✦ Reaction & Review ✦ An unforgettable character...

This is a movie reaction to my first time watching The Silence of the Lambs, released in 1991 and directed by Jonathan Demme. Is it weird that a part of me kind of wants to be friends with Hannibal Lecter? He is a character that I will never forget, that's for sure. Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster were both fantastic in this and gave such great performances! You should definitely watch the movie "Manhunter", as it is a prequel to this film. Red Dragon is a remake of Manhunter, but Manhunter is better.

I have watched a number of reactions to this movie and it's always interesting to me that everyone gets nervous in the first Hannibal scene about her getting close to the glass. It speaks to the psychological impact of the movie. He obviously can't get at her through the glass and her proximity to it doesn't affect her safety, but there's something so distressing about Anthony Hopkins' performance that you forget that obvious thing while you're watching it.

It took me a half dozen viewings before I realized this line was also Lecter alluding to what Buffalo Bill was doing with his victims’ skin, a little inside joke Lector was making at the expense of the Senator’s daughter.

I think the "Love your suit", was also in reference to a couple of other things. One - I believe he was calling attention to the Senator's snobbery, in that she was well dressed & made up, instead of looking like a distraught Mother who hadn't slept, & was overcome by her fear & worry for her daughter. Number 2 - Lecter came from European money, with very rich tastes. So he recognizes & appreciates high style & fashion. Name brands & anything that suggests wealth, good breeding, & "good taste". Lecter tested Starling's & the Senator's sensibilities for rudeness, snobbishness, & indignation. A wealthy Senator, who's daughter was likely kidnapped by a brutal & psychotic serial killer, should be more humble in the presence of another serial killer, & educated genius, who at one time was highly esteemed in his field with a successful career, & who could actually help save her daughter. But instead she's indignant & outraged, & this causes her to be rude. Starling on the other hand doesn't react indignant or offended, but fields his tests matter of factly & with class & composure. So she wins his respect. He hates rudeness.

The close-ups of Lecter were TOO close up, much closer than we're accustomed to seeing. It creates an intense creepy feeling like he's only a few inches from your own face. Brilliant

If anyone cares...the close ups: Director Demme specifically had the 4th wall close ups whenever _anyone_ is talking *to* Clarice...so that the audience (you!) subconsciously *become* Clarice. Added to this: in the reverse shots Jodie Foster is always looking slightly _off_ camera. Arguably the effect is a bit *too* subtle, but an awesome, amazing film-technique regardless. Demme used the same close-up gag in Philadelphia and The Manchurian Candidate.

You say it's not scary but you are watching with 21st Century eyes. The likes of CSI etc weren't around back in 1991 so this was the first glimpse of the world of profiling etc and it was chilling - with Hopkins performance still being so. The success of this film showed there was an appetite for such dark stories with the public.

The casting of Foster, and Hopkins takes this film from good to legendary. Lecter as a character is operating on a level beyond the comprehension of everyone else involved. Clarice is the only one even able to mostly keep up with what he's doing. I think he legitimately didn't want to hurt her, but also saw her as someone smart enough to represent a risk to himself. Better to let her get on with her life, so he could go and do the same.

If you want an under-reacted Hopkins movie which is fabulous watch 'The Elephant Man' from 1980. It will make you hate humanity and touch your heart at the same time. It's loosely based on a true story which makes it even more moving. it also stars John Hurt from 'Alien' but you'll never realise it !

I've got a better movie and Hopkins performance than that one. "Magic" (1978) a psychological horror where he plays a ventriloquist that eventually finds it hard to separate the two personalities of himself and the dummy. A brilliant performance.

This was the first and only Horror Thriller film to win Best Picture at the 1992 Academy Awards. It also won Best Director Best Actress Best Actor Best Adapted Screenplay The scene where Hannibal Lecter bites the guard in the face and beats the other one with with a night stick was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments. Before Sir Anthony Hopkins was cast as Lecter, Brian Cox, Forrest Whittaker, Daniel Day Lewis, John Malkovich, Mandy Patinkin, John Lithgow, Al Pacino, Robert DeNiro, Louis Gossett Jr., Robert Duvall and Jack Nicholson were considered for the role. Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Michelle Pfeiffer and Meg Ryan were considered for Clarice. Gene Hackman was considered for the role of Jack Crawford before Scott Glenn took the job.

The sequel Hanibal is actually pretty good. Unfortunately, Jody Foster did not reprise her role, which was taken over by Julianne Moore. Manhunter and Red Dragon were both based on the first Hanibal book by Robert Harris. Manhunter was the first to be made but Red Dragon is more faithful to the novel. But are both interesting in their own way. None of the sequels measure up to Silence of the Lambs.

I like that you didn't really realize Hannibal's ploy to escape until he took the cop's face off in the ambulance, I felt the same way when you thought the FBI was going to storm the right house and then realized Clarice was alone with the killer. The reactions to this movie are always better when the reactors don't realize what's really going on until the last second, anyway I always feel better entertained then.

The sense of smell is a major component of the sense of taste. Lecter's sense of smell is incredibly powerful. I wonder is that's related to his fondness for human flesh.

He's also an epicurean, an expert in fine dining and elevated cooking. He could probably tell the difference between a 4.5-star meal and a 5-star meal easily. When he cooks and eats people, he turns someone he considered rude and ugly in life into fine art after death.

I just had a thought that's never occurred to me before during this reaction. After Clarice shoots Buffalo Bill, the way that he is involuntarily spasming on the floor, his arms shaking as he gasps for breath, while also wearing those huge night-vision glasses, he almost kind of resembles a large, dying insect.

Loved the Reaction and Commentary Kaiielle! The other films are well cast but never reach the highs of this movie. Still worth a watch maybe on your own time as mentioned. They do offer a little insight as to why they would initially send Clarice to see Hannibal. Also the books are far and away some of my favorites, but also a bit darker than any of the films. Welcome to Hannibal Lechter's lair, he could just "eat you up." I had read the book before seeing the movie, so I thought I was ready. Clarice Starling walks up to Lechter's cell and I am stunned. Just standing there, he exudes Menace, looks at people as potential prey, doesn't blink his "shark-dead eyes," and gets into Starling's head toot suite. 21:12 More than a few reactors have missed this explanation for the presence of Death's Head moths at Jame Gumb's house. It is/was unfortunate that actor Ted Levine didn't get AMPAS attention for his "Jame Gumb" role or his "Goodby Horses" dance. 35:51 Mrs. Lippman, I presume? 36:19 Lesson learned. 36:31 "How did the lights come back on"? The blacked out window(s) were shot out. 37:40 Have YOU ever "had an old friend for dinner?" 37:58 Far too many reactors have missed what happened to the ambulance crew and a tourist at the airport. If it is Horror you seek, "Train To Busan" (2016) will yank your chain and spin you around.

'This movie felt very CSI for me.' for the movie which, no doubt, inspired all the CSI's. My favorite movie. Saw it over a dozen times when it came out in Jan 91. I have almost fully absorbed the dialogue.

William Peterson, star of the first CSI series was also the protagonist in Manhunter, ie the first Hannibal Lecter movie, based on the first book in the trilogy (with Brian Cox as Lecter).

Lastly, it's kind of the book thing, this character usually finds his victims as those he finds rude, and those who get too close.

The most important line in the film is: "He covets." What Buffalo Bill covets is not women's skin, or to change his identity, but......beauty. It's the reason for the moths. He wants to transform into 'beauty', because he hates himself partly because he doesn't think he possesses beauty. In his final scene, he is not merely toying with Clarice with his hands circling around her face. He is COVETING her beauty. In the book, as he lay dying Buffalo Bill asks Clarice; "What's it like to be beautiful?" Such an ironically tragic, and spooky thing to say at the end of one's life. Once again, tis beauty killed the beast. This film's release date was Valentine's Day?!?!!?? 1991. Not exactly a date movie. But, even that has its subtle quality. The part that NO ONE wants to acknowledge is that Hanibal is low-key conducting a Satanic seduction of Clarice, during their interrogation scenes. By the end, Hannibal has intimate knowledge of Clarice's psyche, and most disturbingly Clarice allowed this, because of her wanting to solve the case so much. Maybe also, Clarice has things to unpack in her mind, and for some Godforsaken reason uses this brilliant psychopath as her vessel. Clarice is used to being LOOKED at by men at all times, a sexy 'lamb' who is seen but never HEARD. And for once this is her forum to break the silence of her voice, of her mind, which are neglected, and obscured by her beauty. When Lecter hangs up on their call, Clarice is 1000% mesmerized by him. Just mumbling his name, time and again, because he is now her new obsession, but not completely for the reason she thinks. The secret is that Lecter was the one who was coveting her, the inner her, all along. The seduction is complete.

One of my favorite films of all time. I have watched this movie probably 10 times in my life. My Dad loves to quote: “Once a Census taker tried to test me. So I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti. Ffffffffffff.” Terrifying as a child…but one of his quirks that I know and love as an adult. I have intentionally avoided seeing any of the related films or reading the books … so I’m evaluating this film by itself. My sense is that Dr. Lecter has contempt for most people. It’s part of his psychopathy. It’s also probably part of the reason he can kill people so easily. But he finds that he respects Clarice as a person, a rare thing for Lecter. The big trigger for this might be Miggs’ horrible actions as she’s leaving, which deeply offend Lecter and prompt him to offer Clarice the help she seeks. He’s manipulative of course. But I think on another level he really is interested in what drives Clarice, and not entirely for creepy reasons. And walking Clarice though her big psychological trauma allows Lecter to exercise his psychiatrist skills and instincts. So while we are afraid that Lecter will eventually come after her, Clarice is right when she says he that he won’t - at least for the time being.

Even though Lecter is a deranged psychopath, the exchanges between himself and Clarice were almost emotional to him. She treated him with respect as a psychiatrist and with general decency. She was always polite and kind to him. He treated her the same in return. She trusted to tell him personal details, that he then rewarded with personal insight into her case. But he also trusted that she believed him, and that his clues were leading her where she needed to look. What is his nature? He’s a psychiatrist. He wants to understand people and why they do what they do- What is her nature?

As Clarice said, "he would consider it rude." Lecter is very much about rudeness and respect. The only other person who was calm and confident while dealing with Lecter was Barney the intern, who was always polite and respectful, always referring to him as "Dr. Lecter." He understood that he wasn't in danger as long as he was respectful and followed the appropriate safety protocols. He never put himself directly between Lecter and freedom, and was always polite. He survived the movie. It could be argued that Boyle and Pembry treated him with a fair amount of politeness and respect as well, but since Lecter saw a way to escape by killing them, he took it. I have no doubt that Lecter would have murdered Barney or Clarice if he thought that would get him out of captivity as well. But as long as he doesn't have to, he wouldn't go out of his way to come after them. Dr. Chilton, on the other hand... well, he was rude.

He ( Dr. Lecter) kinda tells her who it is in the very beginning when she questioned him on the painting, He said that is seen from the Belvedere ( "Buffalo Bill" is from Belvedere, Ohio) then he asked "you know Florence " which is Change transformation..

I really admire Anthony Hopkins' acting style ❤ 🎥 He was brilliant in the first season of "Westworld". In this film, those closeups of his conversations with Foster were so enthralling .. yet intellectually creepy.... He really brings that old world speech style and refined nature into his roles.

Watch the sequel Hannibal to see what happens with Clarice and Hannibal in the future and then watch The Red Dragon which is a prequel to Silence Of The Lambs. They are both really good

This movie had a colossal impact on popular culture. The CSI entertainment complex, to say nothing of the show Dexter, owe everything to this movie. Almost as influential as Psycho, which I guess you're doing next!

100% I dont think enough people realize the sheer impact this movie had. It also gave birth to the smart, tough, short-haired female federal agent surrounded by men: Scully from X-files Detective Cisco (Jennifer Lopez) from Out of Sight Quantico That entire trope is a direct result of the strong female lead in Silence of the Lambs.

There are few psychopaths, who are like Hannibal. But they exist. Not totally in this mindset. But yeah. It was a good strat to use Cathrines name a lot. That's why he started to break when she yelled and cried for her mother. "Put the lotion in the f'n basket.... PUT THE LOTION IN THE F'N BASKET!" But when she started screaming he just got back on how many victims were in that hole and it reminded him of his whole desire. But. Hannibal, before escaping, wanted to help starling which is why he said "I won't call on you starling as long as you can afford me the same curtsy." But he already knew her morals wouldn't allow him to just walk away. So she says "you know I cant do that." She was so forthright and polite, he would never opening seek to kill her. However he will do anything to protect himself so he says. "Id like to chat more. But I'm having an old friend for dinner." As. Well in that case. I'll see you then. He won't call on her because as he said "the world is much more interesting with you in it.

Peolple are always going "No, don't tell him anything!" but what a lot of people don't get is that Lecter more or less "cures" Clarice of her trauma. He likes her so he is a real therapist to her and helps her get Bill which is why the movie is called the Silence of the Lambs. Meeting him Silenced them.

The guy who hands Clarice her badge and says "Congratulations" is not an actor. He is John Douglas, former head of FBI Behavioral Science Division.

Fun fact about the making of this film (actually it's not really fun): as part of preparation for his role as Jack Crawford, Scott Glenn consulted with John Douglas, who's basically the creator of serial killer profiling, and visited the FBI facility in Quantico. Turned out that Glenn and Douglas had opposite stances on capital punishment, with the former being against and the latter being for executing certain criminals. In an attempt to change Glenn's mind, Douglas suggested that he listen to the audiotape made by the so-called Toolbox Killers documenting their torture and murder of their final victim Shirley Ledford. After listening to the tape, Glenn quickly came to support capital punishment and had nightmares for quite a long time. Before you ask, no, the tape is not publicly available. There is a transcript, but I sincerely don't recommend looking it up.

While people are recommending related shows, the TV show "Mindhunter" covers the formation of the FBI's behavioral science unit. They were very much Hoover's straight-laced just-the-facts FBI until they realized that they could get actual results by interviewing captured serial killers to create profiles that might help catch other serial killers out in the wild. But early on, they were very much against talking to such monsters and treating them as if they were human.

This is the first time i come across your channel, nice to know you're a fellow Albertan so i'm proud you're representing 😁 This is an epic movie, i read once that Anthony Hopkins got an Oscar for this movie despite being in it for only 16 mins, i dunno if it's true or not but that character... wow, i'm sure to this day he still gets asked about it or mentioned when fans approach him. Jodie Foster too played a fantastic role, such a classic, almost as intense throughout as Sicario. Doctor Lecter wouldn't kill Clarice, he has some type of admiration or feels sorry for her and that translates into a kind of respect for her, I dunno but he wouldn't. Although Clarice is played by someone else in the other movie you should watch to know more about Lecter, altho this movie is the best

The lights did not come back on. At 36:24 when she shot him she also shot out a basement window, once the debris/darkened glass broke & fell away the outside light began to come into the room.

This is actually the second film based on Thomas Harris's characters. The first was "Manhunter" (1986) with William Petersen, Dennis Farina, and Brian Cox, based on the book "Red Dragon". There was a remake in 2002 called "Red Dragon" with Ed Norton as Will Graham, but I think that "Manhunter" is the better version. The mystery is presented in a much more sophisticated way, while the 2002 remake has been dumbed down to keep the attention of the slowest ADD dullard. There is also a 3-season TV series from 2013 called "Hannibal" with Mads Mikkelsen, Laurence Fishburne, and Gillian Anderson which covers all of the events including those from later films. This is an excellent watch as there is plenty of time for character and plot development in the serialized format.

Watch the Hannibal tv show!!!!!!!! It’s so so so good. It starts very crime procedural, but it’s really super heavy on amazing dialogue, it’s also pretty intense and violent for a television show…. It’s a psychological game of chess that - especially in the season two finale - is just amazing. Honestly outside of True Detectives S1 I think Hannibal S1&2 specifically are probably my favorite tv show. *edit* I almost forget, great editing job on this reaction video! A lot of reactors edit really choppy, this flowed really well.

I think Jack Crawford sending Clarice on these tasks was more like an internship. She's a promising trainee who plans to apply to his division - she probably has great grades, and it'd be difficult for him to justify denying her application. But given what they do and how horrific it can be, he'd want her to have some real work experience first, to find out if she really has the stomach for it. So he sends her to face Hannibal Lecter himself, to find out if she can still keep her cool. Is Crawford singling her out for that treatment due to sexism? Maybe. As we've seen, he isn't perfect when it comes to that sort of thing either. Like, in a "dad doesn't think the little girl can handle this stuff" kind of way. Not that it's a huge problem, and he gets over it quickly, but as we see, it was a factor. Or maybe this is a regular thing he does with all trainees who have good grades and who intend to apply to his division. I don't think Jack expected Clarice to break the entire case wide open all by herself, just that she'd go do some minor grunt work on the side, re-interviewing cold leads who'd all already been interviewed many times already, for years. Which is technically all she's been doing, until the end of the movie. It's exactly the kind of job you'd assign to an intern. Although in the end, Clarice won the day by being a modern-day version of an old-West gunslinger. She's quick on the draw. "How'd the lights come back on when she did that?" One of her shots broke through a window, letting the daylight in.

As good as this movie is, you should really read Thomas Harris' books, starting with Red Dragon, brilliant writing, and if you like the description of the investigation techniques they're a must read.
