The Darth Vader chair isn’t a chair. It’s a meditation chamber with a swivel stool. The Siths focus is power. The lust for power. Darth was no exception in acquiring power, especially for himself. All 3 movies he emphasizes people that they don’t know the levity of the Force. He loved that as much as the Emperor did. If he could get Luke on his side, yes they could have overthrown the Emperor. In fact one of Lucas’ alternate story lines was to have Luke and Lea turn. Then a new character would have stepped in as the major hero, to bring back the balance in the Force. Glad that story didn’t happen. But as it was he was in conflict with lust for power and his feelings for a son he didn’t know.

Out of all the emotional moments in this movie, especially the many moments involving Luke, the moment when Luke lashes out and defeats Vader makes me really emotional in large part due to John Williams' theme "A Jedi's Fury". The subtlety in these larger-than-life films still blows me away. It's very much a Western thing, but as English speakers we read left to right, and it feels very natural after a lifetime of fiction for the action onscreen to move left to right. When Luke starts driving Vader back, we see it from right to left, a direction that just feels *wrong* somehow. It's remarkable how such a small thing warns us that Luke's triumph, which we were cheering for only moments before, now feels like the trap it is. Even if he wins, he loses... and even the smallest camera movements tell the story. Lots of people call George Lucas out on his campy dialogue (even though it's Lawrence Kasdan who writes all the best lines in Empire and Jedi). But people forget just how many storytelling elements go into putting a good film onscreen. I'm reminded by Richard Marquand's direction how important that is. And it's a big part of why, as much as people complain about the campy dialogue when Lucas writes it, he still manages to tell a great story. He's a technical filmmaker, not a novelist. And it's in the whole technical apparatus of his films that he tells these stories.

I'm glad you noticed Threepio's design. Both he and Vader were designed to look as neutral as possible, so that their expressions could reflect what was being said or done in a scene. In fact, Vader did NOT yell "NOOOOO" when he threw the Emperor down the shaft. In the original version, he said absolutely nothing... his inner emotions were conveyed simply through the music and performance. The audience doesn't need everything fed to them, cinema is a language of its own.

This movie came out on my 4th birthday back in 1983. It was the first movie I ever saw in the theater. My two brothers and my uncle took me to see it. We were all big fans of Star Wars and I had only seen Empire on a bootleg VHS. I didn't see Episode IV tell years later when they re-released them all on VHS. This Movie will always hold a special place in my heart. I used to hate the inclusion of young Anakin at the end. Originally it was the same actor who played Vader in the movie when he died. Now after the years, I really like it and it changes the meaning of the title of the film for me. I used to think of the returning Jedi as Luke. Now however, It's the return of Anakin Skywalker as the Jedi. The scenes between Luke and Vader have so much more emotional resonance for me now that I have seen the prequals. This is why I think they should be watched in release order.

While Boba Fett's name is used for the first time in this movie, I'm sure most people first saw his name in the credits of Empire or from the Star Wars section of the local toy store. It has always amazed me how big of an impact he had on the fans with so little actual screen time. Your "nicer" feelings toward Darth Vader reminded me of this bit of trivia. In the 80's National Geographic Kids held a contest to draw grotesques (gargoyles) for the Washington DC Cathedral. One of the winners had of course drawn Darth Vader and so now there is a sculpture of Darth Vader's head/helmet on the Washington DC Cathedral.
@Mr.Ekshin2 жыл бұрын
Yup... I was 10 when Empire Strikes Back was out, and immediately thought Boba's armor was super cool. That was one of the first Star Wars toys I owned. In fact, I owned a Boba action figure, as well as a Vader, an R2, a stormtrooper, and a Jawa... but oddly enough, I never owned any Luke, Leia, Chewie, or Solo figures. So yeah... most of us had the toys and knew all the names by heart. The movies didn't mention that the Empire was using TIE Fighters, but we all knew them from the toy stores.
@extantsanity2 жыл бұрын
A lot of people point to Boba Fett's armor as being the reason for his popularity, but I think a very subconscious part of it is the fact that he's the only person, besides the Emperor himself, who Vader capitulates to. He treats Boba Fett with respect, and actually makes _promises_ to him about being appropriately compensated if Han dies or is damaged. I mean, Vader snuffs out full-blown imperial ADMIRALS, on his side and in his own fleet, without a second thought. If Darth MFing Vader treats you with respect and goes out of his way to make sure you get paid, you're a badass among badasses. A lot of people overlook that part, but I think it's psychologically pretty crucial to his allure and mystique.

Aye. That moment is superb. Without spoiling anything, I watched SW for the first time in chronological order and it was super impactful. To see Anakin be consumed by the monster that was Vader and prepare to show his face after several movies was chilling, but as soon as the mask came off... so much changed. There was no monster under the mask. Just an old , sad, dying man who had lost so much in life and wanted to look upon his only present loved one before passing. He truly was trapped in the Vader suit, both physically and spiritually. As mentioned in the video, the sad lullaby version of the Imperial March.... that just added to the feels man. It's also nice how on the dvd chapter listing for ROTJ, it refers to the unmasking scene as 'Anakin Unmasked ', not Vader :)

It’s not even a chair! 😂 With the exception of such chambers, Darth Vader is usually more comfortable standing than sitting, due to the nature of his injuries and his armour. Awesome reaction! I saw this first when I was like 8, so a lot of stuff went over my head, but the Vader/Luke stuff always hit me hard. Thanks for the reaction and I'm glad you liked it! And you were right to not like Lando when he betrayed Han, but then you see later how he was just trying to protect Cloud City and had no choice, etc. But he totally redeemed himself and did the right thing when he was able to, so it's all good.

I went to see this the day, it came out. We had to wait 3 years, I remember me and my friends yelling its green its green. When Luke lit his saber. I never would have thought, all these years later. Young people like you enjoying these films bless you. Oh, if you could react to Superman 1978.

“Leia is Luke’s sister. And they’ve kissed. That’s…awkward.” This sums up the movie so well in one sentence.

When My daughter was watching her husband's reaction to the news about Leia being Lukes sister it was hilarious. He got the confused look then said Wait, they kissed, Hay hold up, didn't Vader torture the sh*t out of her on the Deathstar? To witch her reply totally dead pan was Perfect. Yes they have a complicated Family dynamic don't judge. LMAO

I haven't noticed where anyone mentioned the Ewoks were originally supposed to be big scary monsters. Lucas wanted them changed to short and cute teddy bears so they would sell more toys.

The whole thing with Lando, it's kind of the point. While he was an unwilling accomplice in Empire, this movie still completes his redemption arc.

The older I get, the more I come to realize how truly remarkable this story was. We should not be crying at Vader's death. Nothing he's done up until Luke says "There's good in you" has ever indicated the legitimacy of that statement. He doesn't have a traditional redemption arc, it's just that in the moment where it mattered, he chose his son. Not once are we wanting Vader to turn to the good sign; in fact half of reactors I see call Luke stupid for thinking there's good in Vader only to start yelling at the screen for Vader to intervene while Luke is being electrocuted. This by all accounts should not have worked. But it did. It's so complex in it's simplicity

This is my favourite of the OG trilogy. Two of my favourite music cues of all time are when Yoda dies & then when Luke finally duels Darth Vader. Still gives me goosebumps.

OK, I'm hooked. Your reactions are very genuine. For example, your view of Lando was exactly mine the when I saw it in the theater the first time. I had to give it a bit of thought as well. I was not a huge fan of the Ewoks, but I get it. I'm looking forward to your new content.

Picking a favorite is such a personal choice that one should not be judged on it. I love Empire and Jedi but when I go to just rewatch one it’s usually the original. Episode 4 introduced me to everything Star Wars and has to be my favorite if not only for that reason. I can’t even say how many times I watched it tv as a child when we first hit cable tv in our area. All I can say is everytime it was on I was watching. It was good to see you get emotional too. I do everytime even when watching a reaction. Vader has always been my favorite even when he was just the bad guy lol

Two disturbing things in this movie. First, Jabba died of auto-erotic Asphyxiation. His face and tail tell the tale. Second, yay! Stormtrooper helmet drums. They are totally eating them at the victory celebration.
