This is a TV series reaction and review of my first time watching Fallout (Episode 2: The Target). Jonathan Nolan continues to deliver in this second episode and I so appreciate this adaptation for making it so much like the games. I'm still overjoyed with Lucy's optimism, The Ghoul's don't-give-a-f attitude, and Maximus is out here trying his best to be what he thinks The Brotherhood of Steel should be. I think Lucy just because she sells the 'good natured' speech focused archetype so well. But Michael Emerson's conversation by the campfire might be my favorite scene overall in the show. That weird quaver in his voice just fits so perfectly. Though the 'is it your thumb or mine' scene still hits *real* hard.

The ship in the sand is real. It was beached on the Skeleton Coast of Namibia, in the early 1900's. Since then, the desert has pushed the ocean back 1,000 ft'.

I actually love that this series pulled no punches with the dog. "Yep, we just threw a puppy into an incinerator. Are you still here?" .. "The Ghoul just stabbed the dog. How about now?" .. and the audience is rewarded for staying through the questionable bits.

You mentioned the ocean retreating but that ship is an actual real world wreck called the Eduard Bohlen that ran aground in 1909. In fact a lot of the Wasteland scenes were shot in Namibia around Kolmanskop and the abandoned mining towns around there.

When Lucy didn't know how to holster her weapon while talking to the water filter guy, like some people in the fallout 4 playthroughs pointing their gun at everything even while talking to people, not knowing they just have to hold down on the reload button. 😂

"How are they not getting hit?" Every Fallout 4 settlement building player agrees. I don't know if it's ever been confirmed, but the general fan theory is "Filly" is derived from "landfill" (ie - it was made in a landfill as people probably tried digging through it for useful stuff). The gory death animations go all the way back to Fallout 1. Give Ian a submachine gun and you'll likely get to see one happen to you. 😉

That tumbleweed Lucy saw is a cheeky reference to 'wind brahmin', cut content from New Vegas, sentient tumbleweeds. Also the man that Maximus grabs by the hair is actually the makeup artist who did The Ghoul's prosthetics for the show. Also loving these reactions and your enthusiasm

I love bottle cap currency in the games the reason they’re used all over the fallout universe is because they were very common pre-war, but cannot be produced anymore, and they are very challenging to counterfeit, as well as the fact that everybody recognizes them and they’re easy to transport since the lightweight and small

When I saw how the name was spelled on the tailfin had me wondering how the name came about. When I say Lucy walking through all the rusted cars and they looked to have been in a parking lot made me think it was the site of a pre-war horse race track. I think the landfill theory is correct as you have to walk down into the town much like the crater of Megaton. People dug out the hole looking for items to use for whatever reason and when they hit solid dirt the digging stopped and a town started being built.

19:26 I'm pretty sure hole-in-the-neck guy on the left is the same stuntman Lucy shot with the tranq gun up in the balcony in Ep 1. Which makes sense, since some of the Raiders, Wastelanders, and NPCs in the games kinda look the same. Edit: Also, Jim from "Jim's Limbs" is one helluva sadistic MF'er.

So much fun warching this through with another player. And yes, the Power Armour is physical. if I recall they said the only CGI is when it closes because they couldn't get it to safely close with a person. I slightly envy the stunt performer whose job is to just run around wearing the T-60 all day! The attention to detail is so amazing in this show, it's like every frame is a love letter to the games. The armor suits are practical. In a interview, Ella Purnell said she wanted to get in one and try it. They told her NO. Seems the Pip-Boys are a casing with a cellphone in it. And see broke 3 of them.

Wilzig is an Enclave scientist. The Enclave has deep ties with Vault Tec. That's why he knows so much about Lucy and her Vault. They would have data on it.

The best decision they made was not trying to hide its game origins and instead leaned into it. Bethesda has released the character official stats, and Lucy has 7 luck, so explains how she keeps meeting people and ending up in the right place. Though not apparent now, by the end of the series Norm was my favorite character, so wait for that development.

Fun fact: The targeting system we now know as VATS was also in Fallout 1 and 2 but it was called Aimed Shot, it cost 1 action point more than a regular shot and you can shoot head, torso, all 4 limbs, groin and eyes. If you take the Fast Shot character trait at the start, you can't do aimed shots, but each regular shot costs 1 less AP to perform. So if you take that one plus maximum agility, that is one of the most useful builds for combat because you can shoot at least 2 or 3 times per turn, depending on weapon. Combat in first 2 games is turn based, but the story, dialogues and characters are brilliant.

Actually, no. The enclave is the remains of the government, but corrupt and going feral.BOS are private contractors and paramilitary related parties trying to conserve tech and bring order. Their order.

Heh I did a 1 and 2 replay after watching the show, was a great nostalgia trip for me. Though I will say, 1 is a much more forgiving and concise game than the others. I'd actually forgotten just how short it was when replaying it in comparison to 2. 2 assumes you have a lot of Fallout 1 experience, it just throws you into the deep end.

Since you already played New Vegas, I recommend Fallout 4. The makers of the TV show received 3D model assets from Bethesda from Fallout 4 mostly, and so that game looks a LOT like the show. They 3D printed all the props, from nuka cola machines to T60 power armors, pipboys, radios, the look inside the vaults, every single thing

I'm really enjoying your reactions and commentary on this series! I've been playing since FO3 was released in 2008, then FONV and FO4 when they were released. It's fair to say I love the FO "Universe". You made a comment about FO76, which you said you'd never play. I'm curious as to your reasoning on that, because I used to say the same. Until about 2.5 years ago. A close friend talked me into playing it with him (he lives in a different town), and I fell in love with it too, as it turns out. I do keep returning to FO4 though, especially as a big mod grows more and more (Sim Settlements 2). Anyway, Hi, having fun, why no 76? 😁

Just started F76 after the show. Waaaay better than I expected. You can play it like a single player Fallout and just ignore the multiplayer elements. It’s cheap and you get that fix til the next game.

I love the scene with the ship on the dunes. A real location, no CGI, the Skeleton Coast in Namibia. I first saw the location in a fave movie of mine, it's not a classic, but it one of the first films on VHS i saw. Steel Dawn from 1985 starring Patrick Swayze. Another post-apocalyptic adventure movie. Kinda like a futuristic samurai film. Low budget and very 80s. 😁 📼

I'm very sorry for the poor guy Lucy met on the way to Filly, he seemed more like a desperate poor guy, alone and without water, than a disturbing "background" character (as many have said, certainly because he's not one of the cool guys on duty), with no real life prospects, not even in the short term (Lucy's water made him survive at least another couple of days) and I would like to know more.

Fallout and The Last of Us have made a road map for future adaptations; correctly identify the things about the games that people love, then translate that to a TV audience. Easier said than done, but my hopes are high for adaptations of games like BioShock and Horizon.

I grew up a bit north of Los Angeles (Valencia/Santa Clarita), and if you traveled another hour northwest(?) there was a town called Fillmore. Considering how this season ends locationally, I'm assuming Filly is Fillmore. It'd be kinda sorta "on the way".

I figure "Filly" is named because it's in a landfill. Which makes sense, landfills tend to be farther away from cities (escaping the nukes) and would be mined for useful materials. 🤔 And yes, it looks a little like Megaton in Fallout 3

In the first episode, when the brotherhood of steel guys were looking at the picture of Wilzig they said he escaped from the Enclave. I'll leave it up to you as to whether your game experience lets you know who they are.

The Enclave wasn't present in FNV, but I believe I said in Ep 1 (or maybe it's coming in a future episode and I just can't remember which) that my understanding of them is that they are trying to continue what the US government was before the war from a political and military perspective.

That's the gist of it. They also deal in intelligence, which would explain how he knew so much about vaults and such.

I love retrofuturism AND the look and feel of the Fallout universe but "real" retrofuturism to me is because something has aged, not because it was staged; Fallout is very much deliberate invoking it, while things like say the Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers comic strips or any classic Sci-Fi movie just becomes retrofuturistic after say 30 years or so.

You should really play Fallout 76 some time it’s a real breath of fresh air. I was the same as well but the experiences are just as good. Some systems are different but the work they’ve put in the game has definitely improved it, though with all the new events it may get a little overwhelming but manageable. Still, take your time, and enjoy the next addition to your Fallout collection. 😁👍

Fallout 1 and 2 are definitely worth playing. They made Fallout what it is. Fallout 2 is still my favorite game ever, although you really should play 1 first if you want the full story.

I think Movies with KL you said you haven't played Fallout 4? Only New Vegas or 3? They revamped the power armor in 4. It's like you saw in this episode; a complete suit you can modify, update, and not be burdened when wearing it. You get to be Iron Man. Yeah only NV fully and like 6-8 hours of the start of Fallout 3. The 4th is on my list to get to but I have started playing FO1 and I want to play all the games in order now.

@@kaiielle Glad you’re enjoying the show. I think they did such a great job of recreating the Fallout universe. The original Fallout game (1997) is a 500 MB work of genius and wasn’t published by Bethesda. Just all the dialogue in it is full of Easter eggs. Still one of my favorite games in the Fallout series. I think it’s one of the first RPGs to have you decide how good or evil your character could be. Your actions do have consequences.

Fallout 76 is good now. It had it's rough start, but when they added people, I feel the game got better. I don't know if they still have the promotional "play for free because of the show", but if they do, try it out.

@@kaiielle Think of it this way. You are one of 22 residents of Vault 76. One day the overseer opens the door and says "Go out and settle america." So everyone leaves and goes their separate ways. You out doing this quest for some bartender and you see a vaultmate. He gives you a "Hi" emoji, you give him one back. Then you both continue on your separate quests. Another time you're fighting a deathclaw and you run out of bullets, so you run. It's going to catch you until it suddenly dies. Killed by another passing vaultie that was close by. You do the heart emoji, she does one back, then leaves. One day, you're in your personally decorated camp when you get an alert "Scorchbeast Queen is on the rampage!". You look at the map and see 11 other vaulties fighting it. You decide they need help, so you fast travel and join the fight. Point is, you can solo the game as any other Fallout game or join others, no one is forcing you into multiplaying. 76 is enjoyable either way.

Just curious…what’s your beef with 76? You sounded very adamant about never wanting to play it. 76 is my favorite of all the games. Even over New Vegas and 4. The gripes about its release are vastly overstated. And even if it had a rocky release, it’s so much improved since then.

I hear ya. I dig playing MMOs, but I don’t like playing with other people. I know, total paradox. I like the open nature of mmos, even though games like Fallout are very open world. For an mmo, 76 can be a solo game 99% of the time. Only thing multiplayer I do is events, and that’s just for the rewards. There’s virtually no pvp as well. Not trying to give ya a hard sell, it’s just very solo for an mmo. Anyway, glad you’re enjoying the show. Stays very true to the game throughout. Hoping season 2 doesn’t stray. And judging from the end credits (no spoiler), they intend to stay true. You’ll be excited.

The community in 76 is very helpful to new players. Even with multi-player it still very much functions like the single player counterparts

There are radroaches in New Vegas, I just forgot that was the name of them. Forgive me, it's been 4 years since I played New Vegas. 😂

Been a looong time for me n New Vegas as well. Like a decade. I might need to find my old copy and get a refresher. 76 keeps me up to date on everything in the world, but I’ve forgotten most of the plot. New Vegas had the NCR vs the Legion, right? I need to at least read up again.
