I don't know why, but that ending scene sends chills down my spine especially the more you watch the series and all the people that broke bones/died just to erase their debts and the trials Kaiji has to go through until he versus the demon himself at the end of Season 1.

It’s also awesome the way the main antagonist kind of resembles a living inbodiment of an oni who devours humans alive once they have given into their greed. He’s such a sick minded sadist. Pitting his debtors in gambling matches for their lives and punishing his staff when they succeed. The man truly has no soul.

This is one of the best anime endings I have ever seen, and believe me, I've seen a lot. I feel like it just perfectly encapsulates Kaiji as a character, especially in Season 1. It's both hopeful and melancholic, and the symbolism of the opening is great. Kaiji looking out into the distance whether alone on a bridge or in a crowd, showing his place in society, and how everyone walking by Kaiji has a briefcase or bag of some sort. It's a masterpiece.
