The 40mm is great on a full frame but on an APS-C it's stuck in No man's land. On my APS-C I use the Canon 24mm f2.8 pancake lens instead along with the 50mm f1.8 for portraits. The 24 pancake is the perfect all purpose (landscapes, street et all) lens.

upgrade to full frame :) 6D is as low as 700$ used, and 5D mark I can be found as low as 200$. I found a 5D mark I with a 24-105 mark ii for only 630$ once on eBay. And believe me, full frame is worth it. Even the original 5D does incredibly in low light. The 5dmk2 can be found for roughly the same price as the 6D as well. All three of those options are incredible.

Falena The crop factor for the A6000 is 1.5x so a 25mm lens would be close to 40mm, just a tad wider. I’m not too familiar with Sony lenses, but a 25mm lens would be a close equivalent at 37.5mm focal length. A 28mm lens would be 42mm.

I was debating on this and the 35mm for my canon for a loooonng time, but I pulled the trigger about a month ago on the 40mm and I absolutely have no regrets. I was so used to the zoom lense on my canon that the pancake was just a breath of fresh air. It’s pretty damn sharp and extremely light. It’s my main now.

Me too, I have a Sony A7RIV and couldn't decide on the 35mm 1.4 or Sony's 40mm f2.5. I knew I wanted the 40mm but I also wanted a fast lens. In the end, I felt I had to stick to my guns and get the 40mm as also the 35mm is just so damn big!! Over twice the size and I think nearly 3 times the weight and over twice the price!! I'm super happy now and know I made the right choice :)

Have always liked 38-42mm rangefinders for many of the reasons you mention in regards to the focal length. But these days, and even more so as home scanning/post-processing continuously improves whether digital or film, I think 21-28mm on full frame is the most ideal. Just crop what you need. Otherwise I'd have to agree.. straight out of camera 38-42mm is the McGyver of full frame focal length.

Been shooting a Konica 40mm 1.8 quite often. It's my go-to lens for video, parties, journalism, and candids. The 50mm is too narrow to give contex, and it's most useful for distance outdoors or portraits. The 40 is far more versatile and smaller than my 50, so it's perfect. I find the 28 and 35mm to be excessively wide for my purposes, but I'm sure they are useful in some contexts.

At 2:40 the typical super 35mm digital sensor is significantly smaller than a full frame digital sensor and has a crop ratio of 1.6X. So a 28mm lens on a super 35 camera has the angle of view of a 44.8mm (28mm X 1.6) lens on a full frame video camera. Of course there are slight variations of the size of super 35 films and digital image sensors. A normal lens doesn't have the same angle of view of the human eye. The human eye has a different angle of view for its central sharp vision, a different angle of view for its less sharp peripheral vision and since nearly all humans see with both eyes the total angle of view of the peripheral vision is even larger and similar to ultra wide full frame lenses. A normal lens is a lens that has a similar perspective distortion of the human eye. The perspective distortion is irrelevant with the geometric (barrel or pincushion) distortion of lenses and is the same for each focal length of full frame lenses. Full frame tilt-shift lenses are an exception and can control the perspective distortion. So the focal length of a normal full frame is lens around 43mm. In practice full frame lenses between 40mm and 55mm are considered normal too. At that focal range of full frame lenses the geometric distortion, chromatic aberration, lens flaring, field curvature aberration and other optical issues aren't serious. So lens manufacturers can produce bright normal lenses with good optical quality with very few elements which is something that lower the cost. An example is the very popular classic cheap but good full frame 50mm f/1.8 which all nearly all lens manufacturers offer and is usually the first affordable choice after the typical kit lens.

Bought the crop equivalent 24mm pancake precisely for this, it’s an awesome little all-rounder! Took me a little time getting used to it since it’s not quite as wide as the 18-200 zoom and it’s not as closed-in as the 50 (on the crop sensor anyway), but it’s lovely when you frame things well in it

I have this lens, but only because 50 is too tight on my crop sensor. I didn't want to go wide angle so this was my compromise. In hindsight though even 40 is too tight still. So I bought a 30mm sigma which I'm liking, even if it's sharpness isn't as good.

Thanks for posting, Kai. As usual, both informative and funny. 40mm is "the best" focal length on a full frame sensor, specifically. This is why the 28mm cine lens on a Super 35mm sensor (or film frame) is ideal. Because 28mm equals appx. 40mm full frame. 40mm for FF, 28mm for S35.

Quite. On the M4/3, I'm very happy with 20mm f/1.7 pancake as an everyday, and I still have the Oly kit zoom for when I want wider or tele instead of light gathering.

I have been thinking about this for over a year know. And after watching 1917 which was almost exclusively shot with a 40mm lens on the Alexa Mini LF, I haven’t entirely changed my mind. I’m more opened to 40mm and I think it was the right choice for 1917 but if I could only have one lens it would be a 50mm (a 47mm to be precise). In a really intimate close up, a 40mm will still distort a face slightly while with a 47mm everything looks the way it does to the human eye. Yes while the perspective of a 47mm is the same of the humane eye the field of view is much slimmer. And that’s where anamorphic comes into play. The end all be all focal length is a 47mm 2x anamorphic lens on a 4:3 sensor. You will get the perspective of the human eye, meaning you can get as close as you want without distorting things and you’ll get a nice wide horizontal field of view of a 27mm when going for a 2.39:1 frame.

40s are my favourites, by far. I just wish there were more offerings with updated AF motors (looking at Fuji and Panasonic here since that's what I'm using) and wider apertures. I wouldn't mind an extra centimeter or two of size for the option of an f2 with quiet, smooth and quick AF. Take 40s out of obscurity tbh. They present superb IQ and versatility at a low price point, but a native "premium" offering in every system would be amazing.

I have the 40mm pancake lens. You can always have your camera with you and not have to deal with a bulkier lens. I use mine for landscape photos, mostly. It can be a little tight, but it definitely works for me.

It's also a pretty tough lens. I accidently dropped mine at the top of Red Rocks Amphitheater and it rolled and bounced all the way the way to just a few rows from the stage (thankfully it was in the morning and not many people there). A nice gentleman caught it and gave it back to me. It still works, but has some scuffs and makes a little noise while focusing. photos.google.com/search/lens/photo/AF1QipMUkbtAqHRxRVqD1mjLUurz0dW6k1ruIF10FikA

+insekt, yes Canon has a x1.6 APS-C crop factor including the 77D. 24mm x 1.6 = 38.4mm, as near 40mm as makes no difference. A 28mm lens on the Canon will give 44.8mm ( 45mm as near as). Nikon use x1.5 crop factor on their APS-C cameras.

My default lens is a variable from 35 to 70, which covers a bit of normal, a bit wider, and some longer. With the cost that it's a bit bigger and heavier. Also darker than a prime, as well as a little slower (so not as big an aperture, thought 3.5 is pretty good), but this particular lens has a trick that it can be switched to macro for a sweet-ass DOF-effect. That's only for close-range, but it's a great bonus.

I use a 40mm equivalente 20mm 1.7 pancake lens on my GH2 m43, and is by far my favorite lens for photos and the one I use the most. The middle ground FOV is just perfect for simply every situation. Only downside is the slow auto-focus speed.
