Honestly there is nothing innovative about this tripod. The non-sperical tubes that help them make it compact are uncredited borrowing from Satchler Flowtech Series. The ball head is completely useless hence the need to attach third party ball head via universal adapter to get any sort of use.

This video is an interesting take on the way we perceive/determine what 'good value' is over gear prices. Many of the other early reviewers of the PD Travel Tripod (like Tony Northrup) have pointed out how expensive this new PD tripod is... and yet Kai is effectively pointing out that it's really cheap when compared to the some of the truly amazingly expensive (but also high quality) Gitzo options. So I suppose it's horses for courses really. In this particular case, the big question over this tripod has to surely be: by buying this, are you prepared to sacrifice some usability issues for the fact you save a lot of space in both your suitcase and/or backpack? If the answer is 'yes', and you have the £450, then it sounds like a good deal. And I guess only time will tell whether these tripods start to fall apart too quickly after heavy use compared to its rivals. ...In my opinion, 'long term use product reviews' are an undervalued KZbin genre!

Nice explanation of this Peak design tripod Kai. I myself have owned several brands and types of tripods over the years, and this design for my work (architectural, portraiture and landscape) just does not appeal to me at all. I have Gitzo, Manfrotto, Feizol, Zomei and an Ifootage Gazelle Fastbowl (recently picked up)... and all of them are well made, and most are practical for my work (except for Manfrotto). And even the compact Zomei though slightly shaky when full extended is super compact and lightweight. The problem I have with this Peak design is in fact that very ball head that folks rave about. I much prefer my Acratech heads to any others to be honest for they are tough, lightweight, and simple easy to use designs. And as for revolutionary, I would say the Gazelle Fastbowl made by Ifootage has the most innovation design I have seen with its leveling head built in, though I wish it had shorter legs with another extension to be more compact to be honest. So though no tripod is perfect for every situation, one needs to find what fits your needs as a photographer.

Thanks for addressing the panning question. I'd gotten conflicting answers from Tony Northrup and Manny Ortiz on it, and you've definitely settled the question! One other question that I have is whether the tripod can be carried on the back of a camera backpack. With the Gitzo and others, you can stick the tripod legs into a pocket, and secure the tripod to the backpack with straps. Of course, this one seems much better suited to carrying *in* your luggage instead of attached to it.

Finally an honest review. Not just an endorsement from a youtuber that was paid, or giving the item for a "fair" review. Over time the legs are going to get grit and dirt in them like with any tripod. Making it not as "quick" to set up. My biggest worry with this is the ball head. The way the locking ring for the ball head and the quick release plate are so close to each other. It's not going to be hard to accidentally loosen the quick release plate when you are loosening the ball head. I know you still have to flip the little lock to release the plate. Its a nice new fresh design on the tripod. But for the price, I'll be sticking with my current tripods.

Can you make a video on the platypod “tri”pod as I think it has no uses but the ads say they are very versatile! It would be great
@SierraLimaOscar5 жыл бұрын
I absolutely love my platypod. Now as a tripod it is very limited, but I travel a lot for business and often only have my RX-100 with me and that is the problem, the RX-100 is a good enough camera that you can do some really nice night shots or long exposures... So what I typically did was balance it precariously on hotel window sills, building pyramids of whatever I could find in my room to elevate the camera to see what I wanted... The Platypod fixes that, it adds just that little more stability when I perch it on a ledge that I get the shot I am looking for and don't throw the camera away. It is the only "tripod" I know that fits in a pocket of my briefcase which is typically the only luggage I carry with me. And if the best camera is the one you have with you - that is also true fro tripods. I agree that a simple mini tripod with a half decent ball head will do more - but I usually don't have the room for it. So for my very niche application it is absolutely brilliant.

@@MotoTrotter you have a point there with the feature set, and I admit I was a bit optimistic on my count for the Rollei. But if you were trying to make the PD one cheaper by adjusting for Euros, I have to break it to you: It is $599 for the carbon version. Since the Tax is included in the Euro for everything you buy, and the fact that things don't get cheaper by paying with Euro *(example: the cuff is 30€ and also $30 despite the fact that the dollar is worth less)* they will still charge everyone the 600€+tax+shipping, you will most likely pay something in the realm of 720€-760€ or $800-$850 The point I was trying to make was, that the PD Tripod is, despite its feature set (tho in my opinion stupid head piece), priced too high. edit: can't spell

Don't really know I use an ATF Musketeer been using it for about 4 years works great can set it up and level it in less than a minute and only cost me $25au. Take it everywhere and if it does break well its just another $25 to get a new one mine has more than paid for itself many times over.

Now that you've had some time with it, where did you land on the PD vs Gitzo?

I'm not kai but our shop got them in and I picked one up and am very impressed with build quality! the ball head is very secure I tested it with our pentax k1 ii and a 100-400 lens and it held no problem! I use it with my gw690 and find the ball head intuitive to use when looking through a viewfinder or evf (also the main concern i had being the center column has been improved as it now clamps tight with a simple turn of the locking lug) hope this helps!

@@raiz3375 thanks for the reply. Does the ball head have friction control?
@raiz33754 жыл бұрын
@@gregorybupp yes it is a progressive lock on the ring so you can partially lock it changing its friction. it also has a reinforcing lock to really keep it in place once your set!

Nice to see a product review where the presenter doesn't fawn like a total fanboy!

Add a ball head to the gitzo and it weighs the same or more. Just unfair to give them a hard time for not comparing like for like, when then you don't compare like for like... But good honest review.

Yes, it looks nice, but it doesn't look like that much an improvement over other travel tripods. And I distrust that ballhead.

Jurgen you are spot on. I recently got to play with this Tripod and found it to be highly limiting. It was made with smartphone and go pro users in mind not the professionals.

Been using my Gitzo and Manfrotto for years and RRS . Changed my befree to a RRShead and now I’m good. Although I use the peak design camera straps. Thanks kai
