Kaiping, the hometown of overseas Chinese who can’t go back, the empty ancient town of Chikan

Chikan Ancient Town, an ancient town with a history of more than 350 years, is located in Kaiping, Jiangmen, Guangdong. It was once famous for its fascinating arcade houses. Most of these buildings were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In recent years, in order to develop the tourism industry, the local government has completely renovated the ancient town of Chikan, moved all the residents away, and changed the original appearance. It turned into an empty Republican-style theme park, which caused a lot of controversy.

2016 年 3 月我在查坎，住在青年旅馆。老城区很棒，我非常喜欢在那里骑自行车旅行。可惜他们毁了它，把它变成了一个主题公园度假村。它老的时候很有特色，居民们也都很友善，真可惜！我现在不会浪费时间去那里。太糟糕了。现在它就像一座没有灵魂的鬼城。有些东西最好保持原样。

The old towns/villages are worth preserving. They have characters. Like to see the utilities to be underground (electricity, water, sewer,). They distract the original design. Get wit of that black mold???? outside. Did the originals have a paint job or just natural brick color? Put in modern kitchen/bathrooms. They will become more attractive to live in than these apartment buildings. Probably more space too. What was seen on the video is for commercial purposes, I am talking about for residential. I can see why not many people willing to put in the effort because of cost. Especially, when you can't claim ownership (70).

The main controversy in this area is that all the original residents were relocated, leaving behind an empty city that has turned into a place resembling a Disneyland. Many people believe that a place only gains a soul when it is inhabited.

赤坎比荻海好（我老豆故鄉)至少整齊乾淨，荻海已荒廢了，十室九空像鬼城，屋宇殘舊破爛!

開平現在似乎東匯城熱鬧一點，上週在中山石岐老城區也是變得更加衰敗，現在缺乏有能力活化老城區的人才和知識、資金，大家更喜歡去新建的商場吹空調。

实在浪费这么好的古城，街道及路灯绿化景观，和古城建筑风格格格不入，好不协调，商店的摆设也非常奇怪，应该重新改造，古色古香的味道才是，感觉没有灵魂

古鎮成死城，失去原有风味!遊古鎮茶水小食均無，大一好商铺不利用租赁大失旅遊經济! 單收門票也维持不多久!

Nope. The old town is being renovated for the better. Dilapidated structures and unique architectures are reconstructed, refurbished, and revitalized. Chikan will be a big tourist attraction when everything has been renovated.
