Jenny Erpenbeck’s ‘Kairos’ is, for better or worse, incredibly chaotic. Winner of the International Booker Prize 2024.
6 or 7/10
Kairos: Berlin. 11 July 1986. They meet by chance on a bus. She is a young student, he is older and married. Theirs is an intense and sudden attraction, fuelled by a shared passion for music and art, and heightened by the secrecy they must maintain. But when she strays for a single night he cannot forgive her and a dangerous crack forms between them, opening up a space for cruelty, punishment and the exertion of power. And the world around them is changing too: as the GDR begins to crumble, so too do all the old certainties and the old loyalties, ushering in a new era whose great gains also involve profound loss.

Thanks for watching, and remember: Hans did a lot of whinging for an octogenarian.

I think this is my 3rd favourite after `The Details` and `Not a River`, The `struggle session` chapter is one of the most devastating and well-written of what I've read in the past two years.

So, who should win the Booker in your opinion? By now, we know who actually won it.

I have never hated a character so much as I hated him. While the political and art stuff was interesting, overall I am tired of reading about toxic masculinity and power over relationships.

Yet he was far right and far left at the same time - basically authoritarian. Yet so many feminists are hard left

Found this to be the stereotype of book prize literary fiction - pretentious writing, full of historical and local references, direly depressing. It’d be a shame if it won as i think there are some books that a broader audience would enjoy that will get the readership with the win
