Catinat's performance during the Spanish Succession is tough to explain when looking at his accomplishments during the previous conflict.

Especially how he fought against Eugen! If you read his memoirs, Eugen of Savoy speaks very highly of Catinat during the 9 Years' War, and even notes that he was one of France's best generals of the time. How the mighty have fallen!

I would point out that the Duke of Villeroy had overall command, and that Catinat, being one of very few French commanders that were not of noble origin, would have been a convenient scapegoat in the class-system of the Ancien Regime.

Eugene was born at the court of the sun king, where Louis wanted him to start a church career. He was not of the same idea and went to Vienna to pledge his services to Austria, during the second siege of Vienna he was the officer of a cav squadron. That was his First Battle... What a shame, an Italian that become the finest Austrian general of their history (not my words, but Austrian words, still in the First world war the most famous Austrian war Song was about the "Ritter" Eugene of Savoy)

Incorrect Eugene did want to enter Church life but due to Louis's favorites and Eugene's mother losing favor with the king any consideration for him becoming a priest or a soldier was out the window in France so when he heard about the Siege of Vienna and about his cousin's demise he decided to sign up with Austria.

It's usually said that Louis commited three mistakes at the beginning of the crisis that "rendered war inevitable". England and the Dutch Republic initially "recognized" Philip as King of Spain, but then Louis did the following: 1) Occupying Belgium and throwing out the Dutch barrier garrisons, thus violating the Treaty of Ryswick 2) Having the Paris Parlement confirm that Philip still keeps his rights to the French Throne 3) Ignoring the Act of Settlement of 1701 (Legal Nomination of the Protestant Hanover dynasty as future Kings of England after Queen Anne) and instead recognizing the Catholic Stuart pretenders as legitimate after James II died. It's clear that Leopold would have gone to war regardless but how successful would he have been in the long term without infantry, naval and financial support from England and the Dutch? And would the English and Dutch really NOT look for another excuse to get into the war especially if Austria proved unable to kick the Bourbons out in the long term? That's an interesting debate.

@@5thMilitia The issue is that Austria still wanted war regardless. At this time, Austria alone would not be able to send soldiers to Spain nor seriously threaten Bourbon armies already occupying Belgium and Naples. Milan is the only thing they could have good access to but with French and Spanish troops not distracted by other stuff, and with lack of financial, naval and even infantry support from maritime powers, Austria won't be able to accomplish much. But Austria getting eventually completely crushed means that there's no one big enough left for England and the Dutch to prop up as a counterweight to Bourbon ambitions, which is dangerous for those two countries. I don't think Russia was an option at the time. That's why the English and Dutch might still intervene if they think Austria was about to lose hard, regardless of provocations from Louis.

I think that was exactly what Louis was thinking about. His actions--especially when you consider the timeline--make a lot of sense if you assume his aim was simply to preempt the Dutch and English, on the basis that their joining the warn on Austria's side was inevitable. Guess he felt that he was damned if he did, damned if he didn't. Fact is, the Dutch would not have stayed out of any war, regardless of what Louis did or didn't do: Flanders was basically their buffer between themselves and the French: any war between the Hapsburgs and the Bourbons would have to involve the area, precisely because it's on France's borders. The Hapsburgs could station soldiers there to mess with the French (and this wouldn't be their first time, either). France would do well in any war to attack and occupy part or all of the region--including the barrier forts; it was certainly going to be a goal of the war long term, even if they didn't do this: any war would lead to a change in the status of Belgian towns and therefore the efficacy of the place as a buffer. Of course, the Dutch--quite understandably--didn't want another Rampjaar, so they were not happy with French actions, and even if Louis did nothing there, they would still be worried about a French victory's implications for the region. So no matter what, the Dutch were going to be involved. Louis was a lot of things, but stupid wasn't one of them: he must have understood this. As to England? Well, normally they wouldn't be involved, but the king of England at the time was also the Stadholder of the Netherlands, and his appointments in 1700 were of men who were in favor of a continental war (or at least, preparations for it). People forget that kings still had some power in England with regard to foreign policy--increasingly little though it was. Whatever his personal feelings toward the support of the Jacobites, recognition of the old pretender gave Louis leverage for future negotiations: he could easily throw the Catholic Stuarts under the bus for a concession or two. At least, that's how I read the situation from Louis' perspective. I don't really see him making any serious mistakes: he was just in a bad geopolitical situation. That he was still able to ultimately get a Bourbon on the Spanish throne is telling: for all the genius of Marlborough and Eugene, that this happened suggests that Louis probably made the best decision. It was just--on an absolute level--a very bad decision, among other very bad decisions...

The main reason for the Spanish Court offering the throne to a Bourbon was that the Second Partition Treaty _partitioned_ the Spanish empire. Louis XIV was told that if he refused to accept the whole inheritance, the whole would be offered to the Habsburgs.

As far as I know, in addition to the Swedes, spears were used by Portuguese troops, and possibly the Spaniards. A great point of mention that you covered was Dillon's Irish Soldiers enlisted in French service, which is not mentioned elsewhere on ANY history channel on KZbin, a fact barely mentioned. Connecting dots in my ancestry, the next battle in 1702 was Luzzara, which I most recently discovered a g-grandfather of mine, Colonel Tiernan O'Rourke, died. His wife Isabel retired to St. Gernaine en Laye, France. I cannot locate more information on both their deaths or where (if) they are buried and so again, thank you for the coverage and mention.

Nice video, but there is an error on the strategic map at 11:00 : the battle of Carpi was not fought at Carpi near Modena (as marked) but at Carpi d'Adige on the Adige river south-east of Verona near Legnago, this was the point where the imperial army crossed the Adige

If you choose to maximise your audience by speaking English, you need to use the standard, widely recognised pronunciation. 'Milan' has a heavy stress on the second syllable and a pronounced 'N', as in 'Ja-PAN'. I'll re-record these voice overs for you if you prefer, for a very reasonable fee.
