That little radio seems very well engineered. I am quite impressed with the audio quality on all of its reception bands.

I agree, people put WAY too much faith in cell phones and internet and they think they will always be around no matter what. I once got made fun of for saying it's a good idea to keep a road map in the car in case there's no cell reception; they compared that to carrying emergency survival supplies and rations with you at all times... pfft. Technology like internet is very convenient to have, but it's a double edged sword because it makes people too dependent on it, and without it, they don't know what to do.

I get mixed feelings watching this, knowing that my country (Norway) decided to stop FM transmissions in favor of DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting). 60% of people asked were against this, but they still went ahead and did it. Apparently, the DAB reception is poor in many places and instead of getting a weak signal, you just get no sound at all. So, yeah... When that extreme weather happens and the power and internet goes down, a lot of Norwegians are going to be sitting in the dark without a working radio.

I'm not big on the technicalities, but as far as I understand there are very few AM transmissions in Europe because the long wave band is limited to 14 channels and the long reach of the signal. I'm assuming there probably aren't any national AM transmissions in Norway either.

If your local EMS makes any sense. they have a standard ham repeater on a back up power system in your area where anything else might fail during outages. might make for a fair back up. it be better then nothing right? any bad weather coming youll be sure to hear chatter on there with a standard ham receiver tuned to their repeater. maybe not as detailed but should hear something maybe coming. but you well also hear dispatch on police calls and medical emergencies. I have one tuned in to both my NOAA Station and my local EMS. I always hear them talking about the bad weather. also nice for in my area listen in live for any tornado touch downs directly in my area and not wait for them to make it through the pipe line to get on NOAA or TV even know they are pretty fast about it but the less delays the better. I use a Uniden BC72XLT. Love that thing. lol

It's interesting on laptop computers with a 'subwoofer' speaker -- most of Apple's machines have this setup. It sums the two channels and applies a low-pass filter to drive the low frequency driver. The result of this is that all you hear is the (quiet) high frequency speakers.

Digital radio is a mistake. Aside from audio quality, analog radio is better in every other aspect.
@vwestlife6 жыл бұрын
Actually analog radio has better audio quality than digital, too -- at least here in North America where we use the IBOC DAB "HD Radio" system.
@KRAFTWERK2K66 жыл бұрын
Analog Audio Signals are MUCH better for terrestrial broadcast because even with weak signal strength you can still hear it while a digital signal would have too many lost data packages which makes you end up with either digital glitch garbage or no signal at all. Radio is the least thing that needs to be digital.
@KRAFTWERK2K66 жыл бұрын
@ VWestlife: Yea, same here. DAB+ sounds absolutely terrible over here in Germany, with bitrates usually around 56kbits and lower. Sometimes you are "lucky" to have a station broadcasting at 96kbits but the aliasing and compression artifacts are soooo noticable even at low volumes, it really is absolutely unbearable. Even an MP3 webstream at comparable bitrates sounds better. The analog stations sound drastically better.
@photopuppet6 жыл бұрын
They actually use such a ridiculously low bitrate on all the DAB channels in the UK that analog FM sounds far better! :D

Nice radio. I used to have my Sony Walkman pocket radio with an AM, FM, TV and Weather band, but I lost it many years ago. TV tuner on a radio was one of the last band to have TV audio, but sadly, by June 2009, the FCC decided to get rid of the analog TV stations and went digital, and TV audio has gone static. A lot of people complaining that analog TV stations are going to come back, but not anytime soon. The NOAA radio gives you the weather featuring TTS voices including Paul, the voice you hear frequently on numerous GoAnimate videos including Cailou and grounded videos which I'm not much into it. As a for the message at the end, here in Kingston, NY, we had a foot of snow like 12-18 inches, and thankfully we had power, and no outages. I remember two weeks ago, the power went out Friday and again on Sunday since the house only has a generator where it restores power during outages, except my room has no power still. I remember last year, a big tree fell off and knocked off power lines that cause the power to go out and it gone crazy. It took a few days before they got rid of the big tree. I remember the house next door had big trees, but now, they have only one tree left, and that's fine.

@simontay48516 жыл бұрын
Big trees near power lines should be trimmed or cut down safely before they fall down on the lines or they should be put under the road/pavement. In the UK electric and phone is always under the road in large towns and city's. Only in small villages and the country are the power and phone lines overhead. The big high voltage transmission lines are usually always overhead though.

I wish we had something like NOA in Europe as well but over here the digital lobby is doing all they can to kill off the last analog spots that exist. AM is already gone in Germany… LW was killed a few years earlier. The only thing that still exists is FM but even that they wanna kill and replace with the DAB+ crap that literally NOBODY wants but keeps aggressively marketed. They say they need the FM frequencies for "mobile phones" even thou that doesn't work at that low frequencies. Another big lie is they say that digital radio is supposedly "green" because it consumes less energy. Well yeah they send a lot weaker but that makes it impossible to receive anything at all. And the catch is that DAB+ radios consume a LOT more energy than analog radios. Because DAB+ radios are more or less little PCs. The codec chips inside also make these radios a lot more expensive too compared to analog radios that you can get for at least 5-10 bucks while DAB+ starts at 50 bucks. I really envy you US americans for having a strong and alive radio culture. Especially regarding AM.

Same goes for Slovakia - SW is dead and our national broadcaster now rents the airtime from Kall-Krekei in Germany. Medium wave is only for ethnic minorities (most of transmitters have been scrapped but one plus a few new ones were built. No long wave broadcasting at all. Interestingly, despite having a DAB+, the medium wave in the UK is packed with stations, I can receive up to 100 signals, some of them are multiple frequencies of the same station. I heard over the grapevine that there's no political will for a complete digital switchover, unlike in Norway- the Brits would go berserk if they lost their prized MW.

Definitely portable radios are a must I have a few of them laying around as well. Internet and cable are the most unreliable sources of communication when it comes to bad weather they're usually the first things to go out even if you don't lose power. Another very reliable form of radio communication would be to weigh this could be CB radio or ham radio during weather events or a simple pair of FRS walkie talkies. That's why I don't think radio is going anywhere soon it will never be obsolete I know there's Pandora and all these streaming services but a radio broadcast is always there no matter what.

These run about $20.oo. I have one of these. While it’s not the most sensitive on AM (MW), FM is very good, and Weather Band also has good Sensitivity. These [new] DSP-based radios act differently than an old Analog radio. They tune in “Steps “, or increments, with space in between. Also, they either have a lock on the station or it doesn’t. No fading in and out. If the signal fades, the radio will loose lock, but will re-establish it as soon as it gets it again. For a radio of this type, it’s worth the money. It also comes with a 1-year warranty, through Www.Kaito.US which is based in California, and also handles the Tecsun brand. They are easy to deal with. Mine is almost 5 years old. Still working great. Good review. 📻🙂

@Gubel19906 жыл бұрын
I know these out-of-phase wired Stereo-Outputs of simple Mono-radios from a more modern Grundig Music 50. I think it's to get a "pseudo-wide"-effect when connecting headphones. Not much worth to use such simpel radios as output-source for something different. If I need a FM Tuner-signal "on the go" I just use a Smartphone for that in good stereo-quality. (Samsung and Sony have very decent Stereo-tuners) Try to sample the output of such a radio with 192kHz-soundcard and look at the spectrum: You'll see the whole FM-side-bands including the Pilot-Signal (19kHz), the Stereo-difference (mid by 38kHz) and the RDS (76kHz). Everything completely unfiltered... Here in Europe we also have less Pre-Emphasis (50µs), in America it's 75µs. Less is better for modern music, since it needs less treble-limiting/-compression...

Hey, uh. I noticed that you collect older machines, i must inform you of something of importance. There is a program known as roblox, some older versions of this program from 2004-2009 are lost. If you ever come across an older machine with roblox on it, please inform me.

I would like to have analog. Analog I would like to have back because it was clear crisp you knew what everyone is saying and there was no issue with video quality everybody across the board had high-quality video. I'd rather have analog because you get to experience the maker. I like analog because and number one there's no colors all over the map, you just get one thing clarity and today you get speaker blown sound, you get voice coils sound that's broken 2 today. you think what there saying is cussing, when reality is saying some positive words than a cuss word, because we are hearing wrong when reality analog we should have because it comes out correct.

So the power went down because of bad weather- and then you turned on the radio the know there is bad weather?!- I think you already knew that :) Jokes aside I am glad analog radio still is on these days- and I don't know why so many countries are pushing digital radio so much- analoge quality is mostly as good as any mp3 in modern cars (I only ever listen radio in my car)

Well it's good to have radio in case the weather gets really bad and you need to evacuate the area. If you don't have internet, TV, or landline.. how else would you know?

im pretty sure that at least someone in town will have an update xD i guess this whole scenario doesnt really apply to people like me who live in walking distance of a quite busy town :) but i would be sure to get something like this if i lived in the country!
