The answer to your question at 4:40 of "why not hand held during gameplay" is simple: motion sickness. Movements like that during actual gameplay can cause it on some people

Just finished the video! To answer your question of why Modi asked "How did you...?" Magni and Modi are supposed to survive all the way through the end of Ragnarok. The reason he keeps referring to Atreus as "boy" is because they hadn't finalized Atreus' name when Judge started doing his voice lines, so they had him say boy thinking they would dub over later. They decided that it fit the character better to have Kratos referring to him as boy outside of the really important moments.

I love that the writing in this is so well done that you dont need to knkw Kratos' back ground from the first series to understand his arc. If you do want that context though He was raised a Spartan and therefore his childhood was essentially just prolonged boot camp He sold his soul to Ares to win a battle that he was about to loose Ares sent him on a bunch of missions, one of which ended with him killing his first wife and child in a mad rage that onky ended after they were dead, his sking is sonpale because he was cursed for this, their ashes are fused to his body The other greek gods used him as a weapon aginst Ares promising him they would take away the memories of his crimes, then refused to do it but made him the new god of war When he started to cause problems they tried to kill him He went on a god killing revenge spre, found out he was a son of Zeus, killed Zues and basically every other greek god, essentially caused the end of the world in greece as a result Tried to kill himself, but survived, then wandered for an unknown amount of time Eventually met someone in the norse world and got married and had a son. Now he is trying to be a better person for them but doesnt exactly know how or trust himself

2:24:36 I don't remember the exact details because I learned it off of other comment sections durrig this part. I belive tossing an apple at someone in greece is a sign of showing love, and if the other person caught the apple they were showing love back, or something like that. Thats why kratos cut the apple instead of catching it. *Idk how reliable youtube comments are though.* Edit: I did a little researching and it's kinda mixed, some sourses are saying it's a marrige proposal and others are saying it's not.

@ZeallustImmortal it can definitely be a cultural and environment-specific thing. In my culture (very small minority Asian group), ball-tossing is a courtship thing. It happens a lot at seasonal festivals, between a guy and a gal who are interested in each other. They basically just stand some distance apart and toss a ball back and forth. The activity gives young people a chance to talk and get to know each other while in a public space. What I'm saying is: sometimes when someone tosses you something, they're just tossing you something. Other times, depending on where and when and who you are, it means the they're interested in you.

Kratos was not close with him when he was born out of his own fears of being a father again from the previous games. While as someone who played ever game this was personally my favorite scene that almost always brings me to tears because like you said they show just how menacing Kratos is and I can’t imagine having him for a dad and that feeling of losing your mom and being stuck with this guy. Only for part way through development when they had settled on a name they realised Kratos calling his son Boy actually fit the narrative well and kept it in.

For the "is he getting old?" Question: Hes indeed older. Estimated to be a thousand years older due to greek mythology being older than norse mythology. Also its been a long time since he fought gods so certain aspects can be rusty. Also he holds back mainly because he doesn't like to kill others. Obviously if he must then he will however he doesn't race into things all bloodlusted. He thinks more which in turn means hes slower.

For a little bit of backstory for Kratos -- in the original games he was a Spartan general, as well as (unknown to him) a demi-god son of Zeus. He was a ruthless soldier and conquered and slaughtered for Sparta. He also had a wife and daughter. Kratos, at one point, pledged himself to the God of War Ares for victory in his battles. Ares accepted his offer and gave Kratos great power, at the expense of being in servitude to the god. Ares then tricked Kratos into killing his own wife and child, to take away any other attachments keeping him from full servitude to Ares. He burned his family's bodies at the temple to mourn them, and the oracle of the temple cursed Kratos for them, making the ashes of his family cling to his skin forever and giving him that extremely pale skintone and the moniker "The Ghost of Sparta". Mourning his losses, and more than anything enraged, Kratos sought revenge on Ares. This path led him to killing the God of War, taking his place, and then killing the majority of the Greek Pantheon. With God of War 2018 it's really not just a reboot to the series, but also a legitimate second chance for Kratos as a character. He has a wife and child again. Things can be better this time. It gives a lot of context for why he treats Atreus the way he does.

And in some comics he realizes his anger and being around his family too much got them killed so he constantly had trips in the wild to control his anger and not kill things. If he failed he would weigh that on him as its all to protect his family from the same mistakes. He always loved his family in Greece and in midgard. Except now we better understand why he's so distant. He doesn't want to be but he's this way because he feels he must

I fell in love with this game when I played it - hand't played the ones before, but this made me look back at the story before. I'm not a parent, but the whole father/son dynamic was great. And all the little stories and bonding moments you don't see in this just made it even better. I'm actually currently playing the sequel to this, and loving it as well.

As a gamer its lovely to see your genuine entertained reaction to various bits of Video Game content that I absolutely love and appreciate your patience with a full movie length or more of gameplay/cinematics. Not many other Reaction channels do or can do but you use your Cinematic expertise to analyze and provide professional perspective on things I may have taken for granted or now have a new appreciation for. Wanna know something i like about the dialogue between atreus and kratos? In most of their interactions kratos validates what atreus says or tries to give little pushes in the right direction. Rarely does he say that way is wrong. He tries to encourage atreus to try and peice together what he thinks and how it could help. Alot of the time he doesn't correct him as a good amount of what atreus says is accurate or you can understand why he says it.

The thing today is people want games that are more cinematic and filmic, then complain when they're to like a movie. Are you no longer in the game industry?

@@kaizammit I understand what you mean with people criticising after getting what they asked for, I love that you have done this game as I am a massive geek for both Nordic and Greek mythology. Unfortunately because of just how competative it is to get into the game industry, I wasn't able to, but I do know a decent amount to what goes into game design, I tried to specialise in the both story writing aspect and the level design/world building aspect. I'd love to tell you what I know about GOW's lore (at least what I know of it which isn't much to be fair) but I'm not sure on your views of spoiling if you haven't seen it, even if the games are really old by this point.

The narrow gaps and crawl spaces are not only to hide loading screens(apparently they aren't really necessary for loading) but to make the player feel closed in and sort of claustrophobic. It is a way to add more setting to the game.(This "revelation" is directly from the studio who made the game)

I love seeing your unique perspective as a filmmaker, examining and analyzing the art in the video game industry and its storytelling. One thing I will say, and maybe someone has already given you this advice, if you’re going to watch cutscenes from these amazing games I highly recommend either “Gamers Little Playground” or “MKFireandIce”. They’re both fellow KZbinrs. They do these kind of cut ups for video games too, except they include a lot of the banter and dialogue that’s not included in the actual cutscenes and they show you in game transitions from area to area. That way there’s a constant flow in the storytelling and it also keeps the audience from experiencing moments where you feel like you’ve missed a conversation due to that dialogue happening during actual gameplay. Just a tip, I love your videos, keep up the great work!

I didn't expect to watch so much of this and wanting to watch it all but I'm actually learning a lot and your honesty helps to appreciate this game even more. One thing about Kratos from the past games that explains a lot about his attitude in this is that he absolutely hates and fully distrusts any Gods. When Atreus mentions any thing superstitious about gods kratos is instantly dismissive like when he lit the prayer lantern and it explains why he instantly disliked Freya when her nature was revealed.

Technically commenting for algorithm, but also wanted to ask about something you mentioned. You talked about games utilizing deep blacks/shadows. I recently discovered in my work that the movie/"cinematic" look is not necessarily due to deep blacks but rather due to milky blacks. It's the "S" exposure curve, where the black point is lifted to actually be a bit above true black. I am not sure if it has a real name, but I call it the "S" curve, because you first pin the curve 50% between midtones and pure black and then you pull the black point up. Then you pin the point 50% between midtones and white and you pull down the white point, slightly blowing out the highlights. Those two operations make the curve look like an "S". Obviously this should be done during one of the final color grading steps. If you haven't played with it yourself you should one day open one of your own projects that are already color graded and try it out. It's quite weird to see something you've seen with your own eyes turning into that fancy cinematic look. It feels a bit surreal. Do you feel like deep blacks now are better receveied in terms of the movie look though? I am 33 so my taste might be biased towards retro, lmao. And milky black certainly give me slight retro vibe.
@kaizammit
@kaizammit 2 ай бұрын
Milky blacks have more of an original movie feel about it. It was due to the film stock they use. The "new" look is deep black, heavy contrast. I love that look. I personally crush my blacks which is meant to be a big no, no but I like that. The loss of detail makes the viewers eyes go to the highlights or where I've aimed them within the composition. I even bring my highlights down now to around 75% to give it a more serious vibe. Interesting fact for you. "real life" looking mods for games, look at the blacks. They are grey or 50 shades of grey because we don't see true black, dead black. They also push towards 5500/5600 kelvin (lighting) so to us, it looks so life like or real.

Youll think everything you're seeing to the sides is black, until you see the cow, the cow is so dark that you can see it BETTER because its darkness is so much darker than the roadside blackness.

3:5 hell yeah! thats telc! mans voice is magic, he was the perfect pick for kratos. 40:18 so becuase its not spoilers for this or the next game but kratos's history i can explain a bit of why he acts so distant with atrias not being able to hug him, always calling him boy, kratos's life was hard even before becoming a god at the start of the first game, he had already seen countless friends die in battle, and was the last survivor of a massicure in which he prayed to aries for the strength to survive and deffeat the enemy that had wiped out the spartan forces, and while ares did grant him power he also eventualy cursed him with a blind rage that cuased kratos to sluaghter everyone in his village, his original family included, ares stained kratos's body white with the ashes of his people, kratos went on to kill ares in vengance for this and became the new god of war, but he refused to bend knee to the order of olympus and zues planned to kill him seeing him as a threat, ocasionaly kratos would find a thread of his old life in a lost brother, or an adopted duaghter, but every time he would lose that new found peace ether to an enemy of his past crimes or one of the many gods he angered, kratos fears seeing his son go down a similer path of rage and pain and lose that he did, he thinks the only influence he could ever be is a bad one, everyone he's ever cared about has died becuase of his actions or his reputation.

The most logical reason is that using the controller makes you participate in the game, and having those moments as just cutscenes does the same thing as having quick events for you to the gamers: diminishing the experience. It really comes to the background and understanding the differences between each medium.

I am completely hooked by this video! I cannot wait to see you watch the rest of it and learn more about the world. The fact you are going in as "blind" both in game and mythology sense will have you miss some key tells but also make some other things so much more rewarding. Amazing video and I will be feverishly awaiting your next part and the rest of the series. Ragnarok is not just DLC but expands on the story in so many ways while also making improvements and changes to the gameplay while also keeping some core mechanics. The overall design and one shot aesthetic and cinematography are next level and the graphics even further improved. See if you can find the proper PS5 version running at 60 fps. I agree with some of the other comments that a lot of the side content does fill in a lot of amazing story bits that do pay off but for the sake of your content, I understand that the main story needs to remain the focus to keep the tape rolling. Much love and thanks for diving into this. Cannot wait to see you do Ghost of Tsushima, Last of Part 1 & 2, and maybe even Spiderman 1 & 2. Maybe even the Uncharted series who knows. Sony has some amazing games and stories in their first party lineup. Best wishes and thanks again!
