Kakai Kilonzo is among the musicians I hold in high esteem partly because he grew himself up in matters music from the serene hills of Kilimambogo and later in Nguluni, Tala, in Machakos County. He never went beyond Standard Two having joined school in 1962 and dropping in 1965. Later he moved to Thika and did menial jobs in the sisal and pineapple plantations. It was in 1974 after he joined his cousins - Joseph Mwania Muoti and and Joseph Sila Muoti that his music star started shinning. Joseph Kamaru of City Sounds Studio spotted the trio, noticed their potential and recorded their first single 'Kyalo Kyakwa Na Meli' on 45 RPM vinyl under KAMUKUNJI label. It was followed by 'Dini Yitu Ni Catholic', 'Kelitu Ka Kanyole', 'Mesilya Ma Twilitu', 'Mukonyo', 'Ngatho Kwa Kenyatta', 'Kyalo Kyakwa Na Meli', 'Susanna', 'Mwathani Syokimau', 'Kyalo Kya Kericho', 'Ivuku Ya Ngai' among others to a great reception by the masses. It is worth mentioning that by the time Kakai and his group were venturing in the music scene, other groups in Ukambani had firmly established themselves. They include Muema Brothers of Rick Matee Festo and Musewa Munyao who released their hits under AFRICAN BEAT label. Others were Joshua Kimondiu of Machakos Jazz Band whose gem 'Selina Ivu Ni Yau?' in 1970 was redone by Ken Wa Maria as 'Ivu Ni Yau'? in 2006. In 1976, Kakai, Sila and Mwania then known as Kilimambogo Brothers Band released their first Swahili single 'Kijana Hatari'/'Wanawake Wachawi' under Babu Allan Kanyotu's Studio Sawa Sounds. They also had their own label known as KILIMAMBOGO BROTHERS. Other songs followed in succession under the same label including 'Katulu Na Bell Bottom'/'Eka Kuia Beatrice', 'Muindi Wa Mang'ala' /'Dr. Kalau','Thina Witu'/'Musinzili', 'Serah Nirudie' /'Mji Wa Mombasa', 'Nondo Nene'/'Matolo Wa Maseki', 'Maisha Ya Town'/'Tuheshimu Uhuru Wetu' et al. In 1979, Kilimambogo Brothers Band members agreed to disagree with the Muoti brothers - Mwania and Sila - rebranding as Original Kilimambogo Brothers Band and Kakai renaming his wing as Les Kilimambogo Brothers Band. The two bands however retained Babu Allan Kanyotu as their repertoire manager. Kakai went full throttle first by establishing his own label 'KAKAI KILONZO SOUNDS' and recruiting band members outside the Kamba circle. Tracks released under the above label include 'Kenya Nchi Yangu' /'Unga', 'Kimotho' /'Nthambi', 'Everybody Fuata Nyayo' /'Beba Kitambulisho', 'Mkambas Day' Parts I and II, 'Safari Ya Tanzania' Parts I and II, 'Icera Ria Kakai' /'Karechu' and 'Aume Ti Syana' /'Harusi Ya Utuini'. The year 1980 and beyond saw the peak of Kakai Kilonzo's musical journey. First he changed his label to LES KILIMAMBOGO, adopted orange as the official colour of his vinyls and in following the late Franco Makiadi's footsteps of leaning towards President Joseph Mobutu Seseseko, had dalliance with the then President Daniel arap Moi and KANU. He also incorporated Luo, Luhya, Taita and Kikuyu benga stars in his band. The list read like who is who in the guitar strumming world. There was George Onyango Nzoi, Aziz Abdi Kilambo, Francis 'Danger' Kavuu, Juma Othech, John Kiio Chuma, Vincent 'Red Man' Bunde, Isaya 'Hyena' Shighali, Allan N Other and Steve Sakwa 'Mwana Wa Ingo'. He had George Fombe 'Yahoos' on the sound engineering part as well as Nderitu Wa Munene on composition of Kikuyu songs such as 'Tiga Urimu' and 'Icera Ria Kakai'. The songs recorded under LES KILIMAMBOGO label include 'August 1' Parts I and II, 'Ngoma Ni Twii Twii' Parts I and II, 'Mwongeli' Parts I and II, 'Mutwawa Niwatwawa'/'Mathitu Mowe', 'Ngungu Na Muoi'/'Kilinga Munguti', 'Serah Ka Mama' Parts I and II, 'Mpenzi Mary' Parts I and II' 'Baba Nipe Mali' Parts I and II, 'Serah Ndungie Mbete' /'Ngomeleelye Kitambasye', 'Fastina'/'Kasilili', 'Wakumbuke Wazazi' Parts I and II, 'Tuvoke Mboka' Parts I and II, 'David Munyae'/'Simba Tu', 'Shangilia Christmas' Parts I and II, 'Harusi Yako' /'Leo Ni Leo,' 'Muthonua Sera' /'Ing'ombe' and 'Harambee Moto Moto' Parts I and II among others. Kakai was married to the late Jane Syombua and were blessed with two children - Anita Kilonzo who was born in 1981 and is based in Germany and George Mambo Kilonzo - born in 1983 - a local DJ under the brand name DJ Mambo. The music star fell ill after a performance in Kisumu and was admitted at Ideal Nursing Home in Matuu. He succumbed to celebral malaria two weeks later in February 1987 and was buried in his farm in Nguluni, Tala, Machakos County. He was 33. Courtesy of James Carlos Kilai.
