In my day we called these "sensitivity drills", maybe they still are called that I don't know . But in my opinion based on maaaany years of training , if you don't have versions of them in your training, no matter what style you prefer , you won't be able to apply your art spontaneously . Even if you just make up your own . If you think about it we only have so many points of reference when it comes to physical contact . For example if you take just hands and arms , one guy extends an arm, the other guy extends one in response , they are going to make contact in very limited possible combinations and by doing this type of drill you aren't going to be lost .You'll have a drill for each individual possibility . You'll have made that contact, and responded by feel thousands and thousands of times before . Compared to practicing a full technique or waza(?) MAYBE a few hundreds of time without any improvisation . That why you can learn these drills from a style that may seem entirely different from your own but if you start doing them you'll adapt them very very easily because they'll make sense . (Oops just saw in the description it says "sensitivity" as well. I'm distracted by the Chiefs/Bills game!)

Absolutely! I mean, that was really a part of testing people back in the day. They may SAY they practice XYZ but proof is really in the pudding. You gotta see if they have it or not!
