Osu and greetings from Japan. These kata were taught by Asai Tetsuhiko Sensei since the early 1990s. In simple terms, hey are an extension of the Shotokan style. My basis of karate is standard Shotokan kihon, kumite and the 26 kata; however, these additional kata, techniques and applications have greatly enhanced the Bujutsu aspects of Shotokan. On top of this, these kata are amazing templates for motivation as they are natural and, dare I say, 'fun' to practice and study. That being said, there is absolutely nothing wrong with doing only the standard 26, or 15 (like the Shotokai) or even just your 'tokui'. Each must decide their own way. I hope that answers your question. Thank you very much for the post! Kindest regards, Andre Bertel

Great Kata.. I never see kata like this, is this shuri-te line? it seems not okinawan language, kakuyoku.. more like japanese..

this kata is created by asai sensei
@sebastianmohammed96975 жыл бұрын
the way I see it, somehow influence from shoutern white crane kung fu with no influence from naha-te, but still like shuri-te style.. for example, it's very rare and I couldnt find haito uchi(open hand from outside to inside) in shorin-ryu kata.. except haito uchi from inside to outside, like naihanchi.. so I think this is heavy influence from outside karate..

Asai Sensei referred to these formal exercises as 古典型 (Koten-gata) which basically means ‘old forms’. My theory is that he designed most of them from techniques/fighting applications from Okinawa and Chinese martial arts, which are limited or lacking in standard Shotokan style karate. Irrespective of this theory, what matters is that they function to greatly improve one’s standard Shotokan; furthermore, help to practice pre-WW2 ‘bujutsu’ . If you have gone through my blog, you will find one thing that Asai Sensei always stressed: that he “used these kata as a clean canvas” to teach people to use natural energy to generate power; relaxation; and to train movements which are not only more effective in self defense but also protect the muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments from damage. I hope that answers some questions. If you want more info I recommend my blog site: www.andrebertel.blogspot.com Kindest regards from Oita City, Japan. André

Andre Bertel For many who read your blog and follow your channel, useful IS interesting! 🙏🙏 Watching you perform Asai Sensei’s kata makes me grateful for his creativity, for your generosity in sharing with the wider Shotokan community, and for this (often-ridiculous) KZbin which allows me to widen the scope of my practice. I’m old enough that when I was a kid, wanting to learn more entailed cycling my bike to library to check out a book with pictures taken in the 1950s! In this regard, times have certainly changed for the better! Thanks again for all you share! Oss!!
