Hey, I'm in the process of planning my trip to the trail this September. Any tips on how to get to the trailhead from the Lihue Airport? Thanks, loved the video!

Hey - we rented a car for our time on the island. I am not sure how easy it would be to get to the trail head otherwise. Tough island to get around without a vehicle. Some others we met carpooled from the hostels or hitchhiked. There are also cabs and a bus service, but I am not sure whether the bus goes all the way to the trail head.

Guess the rental car is almost unavoidable. I was looking into taking a cab, but the cost would be as much as renting a small car for the week. Ah well, can't wait to get out there!

I've read about break-ins at Road's End, so I lean away from a rental car. Besides, if I factor in 3 days on the trail, that's 3 days I'm paying for a car and not using it! I saw websites of cab companies that drop off people at the Kalalau Trail and pick them up too. I hope to do this trail someday, and my plan is to stay in Princeville and take a cab there and back, using the bus to get from the Lihue airport to Princeville.

The county buses will not allow you to bring a backpack onto the bus. They are jerks. Take a cab around the island, although it's not cheap. I got lucky returning and filled up a guy's van with gas so he gave me a ride back to Lihue since he was going that way to buy building supplies for his house anyway. It's cool.
