"We were keeping our eye on 1984. When the year came and the prophecy didn't, thoughtful Americans sang softly in praise of themselves. The roots of liberal democracy had held. Wherever else the terror had happened, we, at least, had not been visited by Orwellian nightmares. But we had forgotten that alongside Orwell's dark vision, there was another - slightly older, slightly less well known, equally chilling: Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. Contrary to common belief even among the educated, Huxley and Orwell did not prophesy the same thing. Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression. But in Huxley's vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy, maturity and history. As he saw it, people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think. What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwellfeared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in Brave New World Revisited, the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny "failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions." In 1984, Orwell added, people are controlled by inflicting pain. In Brave New World, they are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we fear will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we desire will ruin us." - Neil Postman, Amusing Ourselves to Death: Public Discourse in the Age of Show Business (1985)

For anyone wondering about the second bit of inspiration referenced in the description of the video; here is the English translation of the poem 'Du må ikke sove' by Arnulf Øverland. Some parts are lost in the translation, and some sentences are slightly altered to match the rhyme scheme of the original poem, but this was by far the best translation I could find. "Dare not to sleep! Arnulf Øverland, «Den Røde Front», Oslo 1937. I was awakened one morning, by the quaintest of dreams ‘twas like a voice, spoken to me It sounded afar - like an underground stream, I rose and said: Why do you call me? Dare not to slumber! Dare not to sleep! Dare not believe, it was merely a dream! Yore I was judged. The gallows were built in the court this evening, They’ll come for me - 5’ in the morning This dungeon is teeming, And barracks stand dungeon by dungeon we lie here, awaiting, in cold cells of stone, We lie here, we rot, in these murky holes. We know not ourselves, what does lie ahead Who will be the next one they'll reach for. We moan and we shriek: But do you take heed? Is there none among you who’ll hearken? No one can see us, None know what befalls us. Yet more: None will believe - what the day will bring us! And then You defy: This dare not be true! That men can be utterly evil. There has to be some one with merits pure Oh, brother, you still have a great deal to learn They said: You will give your life, if commanded We’ve given it now, for naught it was handed The world has forgotten, we’ve all been deceived Dare not to sleep in this hour - this eve. You oughtn’t go to your business hence, Or think: What’s your loss - or what is your gain? You oughtn’t attribute your fields and your kine, Nor say you’ve enough - with all that is thine. You oughn’t abide, sitting calm in your home Saying: Dismal it is, poor they are, and alone You cannot permit it! You dare not, at all. Accepting that outrage on all else may fall! I cry with the final gasps of my breath: You dare not repose, nor stand and forget Pardon them not - they know what they do! They breathe on hate-glows, and evil pursue, They fancy to slay, they revel with cries, Their desire is to gloat, when our world is at fire! In blood they are yearning to drown one and all! Don’t you believe it? You’ve heard the call! You know how infants will soldiers remain, While dashing through streets, fields, chanting ‘bout pain Aroused by their mothers‘ assurance of glory They’ll shelter their land - and they’ll never worry You know the fatality of the lies, that glory and faith and honor abides You discern the dauntless dreams of a child, A saber, a banner, he’ll flaunt them so wild, And then they’ll leave home for a rainfall of steel, ‘Till last they hang ragged on barbed wire will, Decaying for Hitler's Aryan call, That is what a man’s for - after all… I couldn’t imagine - too late now it is My sentence is just: The verdict's no miss I believed in prosperity, dreamt about peace In labor and fellowship; love’s fragrant kiss Yet those who don’t die on the battlefield, Their heads for the axeman, will certainly yield I cry in the gloom - if only you’d knew There is but one thing - befitting to do Defend yourself, while your hands are still yearning, Protect your offspring - Europe is burning. *** I shook from the chill. To dress, up I rose Without stars were shining, so far, yet so close ‘twere simply a brilliant ray in the east, Admonishing warning from the dream that just ceased The day that soared up from earths furthermost strand Augmenting with blood - and with firebrand It grew with terror - like a breath that was lost It seemed like the starlight - was slain by the frost. I weighed: Something is imminent - and it’s dire Our era is over - Europe’s on fire! Translated by Lars-Toralf Storstrand."

@Fritz_Schlunder Жыл бұрын
Dangerous? The most plausible danger that I see is that the government and/or religious groups might decide that music can carry subversive lyrics, whereby the artists creating the content should get labelled and arrested as domestic terrorists. The word "freedom" is a dangerous word. Ideas of "freedom" are dangerous. Thoughts of a future existence based on "freedom" is dangerous. "Freedom" is dangerous. Those who want "freedom" are crazy. Those who are willing to take actions in this world to promote "freedom" are "criminals" and they are dangerous. People should fear "freedom". "Freedom" is Satanic. "Freedom" is a Satanic scheme to try to entice people into sin. But not really. The above are some of the spoken and unspoken lies of society. Freedom is good. Slavery is bad. Tolerance of slavery leads to acceptance of a society based on eternal torment. People should pursue freedom, while shunning evil. Slavery is evil. Eternal torment is evil. It is possible for people to learn to be nice to each other. It is possible to end war. It is possible for people to live in a free society. It is possible for everyone to be wealthy. It is possible for people to "have it all". It is possible to have it all, and to be simultaneously happy. Such a society is possible, but it does not exist yet. People must work to build it. People must accept that it is possible, before it can be built. People must reject the lies of society, while embracing freedom and all that which is good. People need to learn how to treat each other right. It is possible to build a brave new world, when people believe that it is possible, and when people do not fight it.

Perhaps not in full, but there are undoubtedly elements of 1984 that have become so ingrained in many societies it would be difficult for many to isolate them easily. 'Doublethink' is one I've watched in my own country over the last three decades become rather accepted. Pointing contradictions out like this will have the effect Huxley wrote about by the mass of your fellows disregarding or deriding you for thinking. Huxley was one of Orwell's professors and wrote to him after publishing 1984, it's not hard to speculate they were influenced by each other and neither of their works are mutually exclusive in practice.

Oh my god! I'm crying! I never cry wtf?? Seriously, this is the best song I've heard all year and I'm shook. I LOVE IT. The ending is incredible and I LOVE the last few lyrics! KALANDRA, I HAVE ONLY JUST DISCOVERED YOU BUT I LOVE Y'ALL ALREADY!

@calthyechild4 жыл бұрын
@@Arjya1 It's not you crying, not exactly. It speaks to what your heart is missing. It begs for you to wake up and see that it's not really a song about an old book, but a song about today, about yesterday, about tomorrow. You cry, even though you have no conscious reason to cry, because your soul is crying and there is a divide between you and your truth because of what this video is showing you. Unfortunately tears are pretty much guaranteed when your soul is touched, no matter how tucked away and shielded and sheltered from harm you may keep it... this video reached in deep.

@YUSRA Most billionaires are doubling their wealth during Covid... If they sell the vaccine they will gain what guess about a trillion $ for the elites... and all that only by lies, there's no covid virus, the vaccine will be full of toxic garbage in it, DEPOPULATION (they thrive for it) CONTROL, U BECOME A BIGGER SLAVE... Also, they were holding the crisis for a few years, now a pandemic seems like a fair excuse for it, while in reality it's entirely the banksters fault. Seems a fair deal to me, now i'll get back to my tinfoil house and laugh how the masses fall into the slaughterhouse like mere sheeps. Do something? As you've said we aint special , you aint too, why should i bother?

"Take your time, but not too long. Make it worth the time you own." This wisdom surpasses all schools of thought, even with or without family cutlure, and yet combines all teachings at the same time. For now, it's all we have. For now. Hopefully evil doesn't take your away.

It's like woah 😳! And it's like what greater bravery than to believe in and see how ALL things can be made to work for good as promised long ago 🤔. Sounds easy until you see the degree of humility it takes to believe in the positive potential of everything 🤔 Just when you can't go no more, in our silence pondering that which we can't understand. We see the grace of God spring forth like weeds breaking through cement. When in doubt stay strong and have the faith to believe God is Good always in all His ways regardless of whether you're able to understand His way 😎🙏

2:35 I got chills everywhere. This is far heavier than what I expected it to be but it's so, so important and I hope more people listen to this because we have no clue where this world is going at this point, but we do know it's not going to be anything good.

Been listening to this since it came out. Haven't regretted at all. In fact it helped in an unseen way. Something inside me kept screaming to break free from a bad situation. But it was so weak i couldn't hear it. I was so heavily burdened by so many things i was distracted from my own personal health. Then I heard this. The scream became a roar. The roar an action... The action a journey. That by the time it was over and I "woke up"... I realized something dramatically changed. It was so peaceful i was terrified. I had been living in chaos and harmful environment that i remembered nothing else. But then i crawled out and braved it out and found the courage i lost so long ago as a child. And i feel strangely stronger now than i did when i was fighting the rattling storm. I don't know if anyone who heard this experienced the same. Especially since the lyrics go far deeper than the insane world I lived in, that i broke free from. But if it's lyrics help anyone in any way, the way it helped me, I dare say I am glad. My life could have literally ended differently. In the words if my sister, who loves books... Words have power, and songs are what carry them.
