Today we take a look at exercises specific for improving proprioception or 'sense of body-in-space'.
Think of an animal in the jungle as it walks through the undergrowth. It will see the obstacle and lift the front legs but then will also lift the hind/back legs, without looking back to see where the obstacle is. This is because of the animal's excellent sense of proprioception.
Now in Kalari we have numerous exercises which work to improve this sense. That is because we can direct the joints to increase the number of proprioceptor cells and we do that through specific diagonal patterns of movement - much like modern PNF techniques in Physiotherapy.
The first of these is a square footwork exercise from Central style- as seen in a recent LIVE class by those of you who attended - the second is the 'lion walk' taken from Northern style.
