You're totally right about the of thoughts being manipulated at a level where we can start questioning our own sanity. And yes they communicate through thoughts when they want and those messages are very different and very clear somehow one knows that this thought or message is external. They can also make you obsess over stupid things. Or make you crave certain things to eat. Apart from thoughts they can also manipulate the motary functions of humans but to some extent for short periods of time. As for the the person going through this not remembering the things that happened is true. But from some personal experience i would say one can remember what happened during the time of being under the influence. This is a very slippery slope and there's a very thin line between mental problems/ spiritual problems. But somewhat mental is also the part of spiritual. Allah knows best.
