I remember the morning my dad woke me up to tell me to come watch the news. He knew that I loved the Beatles. I saw my dad get choked up 5 times, Kennedy, King, Kennedy, my brother passing, and John. He couldn't tell me himself. He had to let me see the news on TV. He didn't like all of his music but loved Imagine. My dad was a Vietnam veteran. He was also a libertarian. He respected John and his stance against war.

I'm sure you're a very nice person but I'm sorry to say what I comes to this song you missed the beat big time on this one first of all do you know who is written for.? Elton John wrote this in memory of John Lennon. they were very close and Elton took it very very hard. So he wrote this song for himand he plays it every year every since John Lennon died .mr. Lennon has been coined as having the biggest standing ovation from a crowd of any music legend in history when he did a performance at Madison square garden where you'll go and he got back together I know John was president of course. Thank goodness some people did have technology to record this and again it was the biggest loudest ovation any musical persona has ever received. If you listen to the song in this context with a close friendship between the two you will understand more and it is very much not amusing nor does it amuse meeting

I have always loved this song and I know that for many of you out there losing a beloved pet can be as devastating as losing a human being. We just lost our beloved pig, and our hearts are broken every time we walk by his empty hut. Just like Wilbur from Charlotte's web, he was remarkable stupendous and extraordinary. He was humorous and a real spitfire. Empty Garden is a beautiful song and really speaks to the emptiness and profound sadness that we all feel when losing a loved one, no matter human or animal.

Absolutely a stunningly beautiful tribute to Lennon from long time friends Taupin and Elton. Having said that, I do believe Lennon's best work was behind him at the time of his death. It was the same as George Harrison. From the time Lennon was murdered to the time Harrison died of cancer, George only had one more hit single and with it a fairly decent album. I personally can't see how Lennon would have had the drive and determination to keep up with the longevity and success that McCartney had and still has. McCartney is and was a workaholic and Lennon and Harrison, in their own way, weren't.

Does he have any lyrical theme in mind? Did he start with just a few words? Maybe he had an inspiration for "Johnny -- can you come out to play?" and Bernie took it from there. It seems so difficult and very tricky for a collaboration come out with so much single-minded strength. Please! How do you do it?

What happened here As the New York sunset disappeared I found an empty garden among the flagstones there Who lived here He must have been a gardener that cared a lot Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop And now it all looks strange It's funny how one insect can damage so much grain And what's it for This little empty garden by the brownstone door And in the cracks along the sidewalk nothing grows no more Who lived here He must have been a gardener that cared a lot Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop And we are so amazed, we're crippled and we're dazed A gardener like that one, no one can replace And I've been knocking But no one answers And I've been knocking Most all the day Oh, and I've been calling Oh, hey hey Johnny Can't you come out to play And through their tears Some say he farmed his best in younger years But he'd have said that roots grow stronger if only he could hear Who lived there He must have been a gardener that cared a lot Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop Now we pray for rain and with every drop that falls We hear, we hear your name And I've been knocking But no one answers And I've been knocking Most all the day Oh, and I've been calling Oh, hey hey Johnny Can't you come out to play And I've been knocking But no one answers And I've been knocking Most all the day Oh, and I've been calling Oh, hey hey Johnny Can't you come out, can't you come out to play Johnny, can't you come out to play in your empty garden Johnny, can't you come out to play in your empty garden Johnny, can't you come out to play in your empty garden

Such a beautiful song. Of course, it's about John Lennon. And, I always think......if he had stayed in England, I bet he would still be alive because they don't have such stupid gun "rights" like we have here. I have read that Elton rarely plays this live because he can barely make it through it, it tears him up.

Elton: Johnny, can't you come out to play in your empty garden? Johnny's replies: 1. Sure, but we'll have to be at least six feet away from each other. 2. Sure. Let me put my mask on. 3. Sorry, but I'm supposed to stay inside.

By the way--I bet many of you, like me, listened to this song Dec. 8, the 42nd anniversary of John Lennon's death, and raised a glass to him. He'll live forever in our hearts.❤

The Heir of Slytherin || No, "...he must have been a gardener that cared a lot, weeded out the tares and grew a good crop, and now it all looks strange. Funny how one insect can damage so much grain." It harkens to the Tares & wheat parable. It's an allegory and the words are symbolic. One person (insect), the killer, can do so much damage. Bernie Taupin was clever with his lyrics like that. It's about everyone's pain, but mostly Elton's as he and Lennon were friends. YJGS

MightyMouse350 I looked up the lyrics online and its tears, but tares makes sense so it might be wrong :)

I've listened to that line quite a few times after reading your comment. Elton definitely says 'tears'. If he meant to say 'tares', he mispronounced it.

John Theos It's definitely tares, as in the parable of the Wheat and Tares from the Bible.
