‘But you musicians have the best job in the world, how could you possibly be depressed?’
Sound familiar? Whether or not you’ve thought or heard something like this, the fact remains that 71% of musicians believe they have experienced anxiety or panic attacks and 65% report that they have at some point suffered from depression*. This week is Mental Health Awareness week, and here at Kaleidoscope Orchestra we’re marking it with a suite based on tunes by the late Swedish DJ and producer, Avicii.
Musicians’ mental health is becoming a topic of increased interest, and Avicii’s story is one that resonated with musicians worldwide back in April, when he was found dead at the age of just 28. He appeared to have it all: millions of fans, huge worldwide hits, festival bookings across the globe. However, out of the spotlight, his family tell a different story, describing him as an ‘over-achieving perfectionist,’ who ‘could not go on any longer.’ Before retiring from touring, Avicii would often play two shows in one night, despite reportedly never liking being in the spotlight.
The music may be different, but classical musicians and pop musicians have many things in common: whilst perfectionism often drives us, it can be the thing most holding us back. Many aspiring and professional musicians have a ‘binge-purge work schedule,’- times where there’s barely time to eat between gigs … and times where there’s barely money to eat between gigs. Perfectionism and uncertainty of work, combined with antisocial working hours and the attitude that ‘musicians shouldn’t be depressed,’ creates a culture of silence that can be, and needs to be broken. We love our jobs, but let’s keep breaking the silence around musicians’ mental health.

I am here by accident - I am a soldier of twenty years, diagnosed with anxiety and depression - still hard to believe it, because I hide it, well. Good training I would guess, but I must say, there is a way out, I believe it, music assists it - Thank you for making this happen and appreciate it for all who need to hear this. The sounds are all which we need more of. This makes a difference, you have to know this.

Dan 2016 and also man, that’s not the right moment to discuss about religion: it’s hopeful thinking that something like that could exist, but I repeat, these are not the right circumstances to talk about that.

That's essentially what happened, there was a tribute concert held for him in December of last year in his home town of Stockholm and included was a live 30 piece orchestra playing his music along with the singers and collaborators all coming together to be apart of it too, it was held in the friends arena which has a capacity of about 50,000+ and all 55,000 or so tickets were sold out in less than 30 minutes when it was announced, the concert also broke a Stockholm record for the largest crowd ever recorded in the city and arena with over 58,000 people in attendance

I'm not a musician, but I do know quite a lot about mental health problems, as I'm struggling with those myself. I just wish to give one advice: find the right person and talk. Talking about what you feel will never get you into any kind of trouble and it will be a big relief to finally be able to voice your struggles to someone else. And if you think that's scary then just write your thoughts down and show what you have written to the right persons--to a friend or a doctor, for example. That's actually a method that worked out for me. I'm being treated and helped by doctors and friends, and they never let me down. I even picked up my old hobby: writing stories. I guess musicians and writers aren't so different after all... In the end, we're all creative people, are we not? Thanks for the video, kaleidoscope, the music was amazing!

Mental health is complex and takes many lives. Once someone is ill it is very hard for them to find the cure but we can find it for them if we are quick enough. It is usually as simple as taking them to a wilderness and just walking around for a few days. Understand mental health and save someone today. Love peace and happiness xxx

This is beautiful! Made me tear up. All of you are incredible. Thank you for making this 👏🏼✨ I hope the music world would care for the artists’ well-being first. I know it may be a brutal industry but it doesn’t have to end up losing them. Sometimes ‘passion’ becomes ‘pressure’ for some, that it’s not healthy for them anymore. Depression is like a silent killer. We should also look out for each other, be kinder and to always appreciate, show more love and support to our favorite artists, their work and everything that they’re giving/making to make us happy. I wish i got more chance to do so with Avicii. All we can do now is to always keep his memory alive through his great music. We love and miss you, Tim ♥️💫

This rendered me speechless and in tears... This is so incredible, I don't know where even to start. Amazing composition, performance and HQ recording to bring every single sound right to the soul. But most importantly, it erases the boundaries between genres and shows how great and eternal music is. It sewes everything together - music of Avicii, greatness of orchestra, past, present and future. Amazing. I wish by the time I die there'll be an orchestra willing to pay me and my music a tribute this way.

I learnt of your group at Creamfields this past weekend. When the first chords of this began I immediately broke down in tears not knowing what was to come. Absolutely beautiful job, you all certainly did Avicii proud.

One thing I love about this piece is that all instruments are represented, just the way it should be. Beautifully written!

I don't know why but every time there was a gap and they continued to the next song, it brought tears to my eye. I loved it ❤❤❤

This is so underappreciated. I'm sat here with piles of work in lockdown and no idea how to face life - and this made me feel things. Superb performance, I cannot describe how hard this hits!
