On one of her visits to Kerala in the late 80s, Santha Bhaskar met up with an astrologer who expressed surprise that she had neither heard of nor visited her family temple up till then. He advised her to go to the temple at least once before she headed back to Singapore in 2 days.
That started a cascade of asking around which eventually led her to the Puzhikunnu Devi Temple. Accompanied by a relative, she set out at dawn in the hope of getting there before the temple closes after the morning prayers. When they arrived, the priest was seated outside. They felt their heart sink but upon enquiring, the priest said "Someone called and asked me to wait because a devotee was coming." But none of them had actually called!
Upon entering the temple, she felt a certain vibration, a positive energy that gave her sense of calm which motivated her. The result: on her flight back to Singapore the next day, she penned the lyrics to Kali Kauthuvam.
Since then, Kali Kauthuvam has been taught to Nrityalaya students, generation after generation. A tradition that is still carried on by current Gurus Meenakshy Bhaskar (California), Ambujah Thirunavukarasu (Singapore) and Shyla Ganesan (Arizona), and will be continued by the younger Gurus when their students are older.
