Hey, great teaching vid!! I have noticed alot of similarity between highland broadsword and Kali Ilustrisimo. Both use angle and sliping the leg. Love both arts!🙏

It's heavily influenced by spanish fencing i thought

the secret is the body posture not only Reterada and footwork ! the defender kept his spin straight but the attacker his body exposed like he lean in ! no magic , at the end of the day its nice and looks fancy !

I hesitate to call it "footwork" as its a transitory position that trends to sit in the middle of other positions, making it incredibly accessible physically. Its accessibility is key because it is usable when breaking an opponent's timing, which is probably the crowning glory of K.I. Shawn's posture (after the step back) retains a right hip forward position instead of putting back as one would with a full step back, gaining him access to additional range. If you want to see a similar footwork in use, review olympic epee matches and see the positioning used on that long backhand thrust. Really great video Paulo, both cats did a great job showing this.

It is quite possibly the influence of Spanish friars & their fencing with its' geometric patterns.

Your counter outspeed the opponent and reach him on the counter because he is not fully backout.

You got longer reach. Why not try the other way too. You find your reach and he backs out and he hit you.

That will never ever work with my own invented weapon and style.
