Important note on different versions of Mahabarath: The original Mahabharata written by Ved Vyasa may or may not have survived over time. The widely acclaimed Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI) edition is a critical compilation of the Mahabharata, comparing over 1000 ancient manuscripts to reconstruct the text. This compilation work took 50 years from 1917 to 1966. The BORI edition is considered to be most closer to Vyasa's original work but nobody knows for sure. There are over 20 major versions or commentaries of the Mahabharata in India, along with a plethora of regional folklore added to the epic. The idea of Karna being portrayed as a great, charitable figure is particularly emphasized in Tamil and Telugu versions. Tamil literature, in particular, celebrates Karna's character extensively.
