Kallistos Ware knows that theology is not just an academic discipline. It is that and much more. As the Desert Father Evagrius wrote, "If you are a theologian, you will pray truly. And if you pray truly, you are a theologian." (Treatise On Prayer, 61). Theology requires actual experience in prayer. -Amos Smith (author of Healing The Divide: Recovering Christianity's Mystic Roots)

Please tell me then what Yeshua stands for? It doesn't mean Saviour. Or why Jesus' name is Yeshua?

Jesus and Yeshua are the same name. The name means 'God saves'. 'Jesus' results from a long history of transliterating the name across a number of languages with different scripts and sound systems - from Hebrew to Greek, to Latin, and on to English, French, Spanish, Italian. 'Yeshua' is an attempt to transliterate directly the (reconstructed) sound of the initial Hebrew.

Kallistos Ware and the newly in Heaven Dr. Ravi Zacharias are two of the chief Raconteurs of our time! Deceptively funny, I've grown immensely from both of their ministries! Glory to The Father and to The Son and to The Holy Spirit both now and ever and unto ages of ages Amen!

The most important first step is finding a priest to talk to about the faith...they don't have to be your spiritual father, but it is imperative to have someone to kind of lay it out for you...books are a wonderful blessing, but they can't always answer all of your questions. :) Some good books to start with would be The Orthodox Church by Kallistos Ware, The Orthodox Way, The Ladder of Divine Ascent, and Wounded by Love by Elder Porphyrios.

Thankyou for making this available and secondly thankyou Kallistos Ware for your tireless commitment to he Kingdom. You enrich us and you ennoble us. Surely theology is in part biblical eisegesis/exegesis? It must be conducted after the writing of scripture. In that case the writers of the bible were the first theologians who derived their theology from God as source of wisdom. We could legitimately call King David the first Christian due to the Psalms in which there appears to be a total union with Christ and in this we see that these first "theologians" were conducting a theology which was steeped in direct experience of God. Finally St;Paul was the archetypal theologian. The epistles are precisely an unfolding and expounding of the scripture. They had a didactic function and revealed hidden aspects to scripture making them unique insofar as they are not shattering revelations in the sense of the incarnation but permit us to enter into the depths of the mysteries of God

Brother, philokalia is a very deep and difficult in meanings and spiritually reading! You can always study Orthodox Theology through the life of saints, such as Elder Paisios, Elder Porfyrios etc (check amazon for english copies). Gerontikon is also rich in such matters!

It is most important to be guided by a spiritual father. All we do as Orthodox Christians should first and foremost be done through humble OBEDIENCE. The West teaches that you can determine what you should obey by simply reading (the bible). Orthodoxy teaches that we look to our priest for all rules we follow: prayer, fasting and everything we might confess about, which IS everything. You WILL find your spiritual father, if you are humble in your search and lean not on your own understanding.

Oh, also. The Bible is a great book to start with :) And as far as hesychasm, if you're also interested in some of the history and iconography surrounding the tradition, there is a great book called metamorphosis by andreas andreopoulos. Best of luck, and please feel free to message me to chat. With love in Christ, Sarah

A wonderful discourse. However, the Jews do not believe angels have free will. How then do you describe their relationship with GOD?

The book The Jesus Prayer is hesychastic in the way you might be looking for. However, I would very seriously suggest you don't read the Philokalia without some kind of spiritual guidance. I don't know how long you've been Orthodox (or just interested in the faith? You didn't specify if you were a catechumen :)), but sometimes books such as those, which are intended for people in various spiritual states, can be confusing or even dangerous if you don't have guidance and understand context, etc.

2:24 What is Theology? • Theology is NOT found In The Scriptures, NOT found in The Bible • The 12 Apostles were not educated in Theology • The term Theology entered Christian discourse gradually.
